Wasn't that the same year that Lincoln said when he went to Richmond after its fall, "La Fayette, the Yankees are here!"

This thread took a sickening turn.

You don't like someone attacking what we all here consider a useful part of the university, so we stoop to the same level by questioning if TEACHING THE GERMAN LANGUAGE IS USEFUL?

Good god.

I think people are just illustrating the absurd with absurdity.

BUT it is not unrealistic to consider that maybe we have too many majors at our fine university. Why do we offer so many more majors than most universities? To what extent are we sacrificing quality for quantity? How many students are choosing each of these majors and how many do they need to be sustainable? How exactly do you define sustainability? These are all questions that are not being asked (as far as I know) and should be.

Yes. It was 7 score and 4 years ago, right after they dumped all the tea in Lake Erie.

I'm truly amazed at the knowledge of US history the posters on this board have.
Must have been or are history majors.

On another note, there's an article in today's The Post about Frank getting a raise.

Guess we can look foward to another letter to the editor from Mr. Thomas.

Sorry guys, but no matter how much we all love this stuff, academics is the CORE MISSION of the university. Athletics is just a nice-to-have.

And I seriously hope that those who are suggesting that cutting departments in lieu of athletic cuts are just being funny. Otherwise I think folks are becoming seriously confused about "what we're all about", to quote the good Dr. Solich.

I'm not suggesting that we should be cutting departments/majors instead of cutting athletics.

We have ALREADY cut athletics to the minimum # of programs we are allowed to have and keep our NCAA Div. 1 rating.

We should be asking do we NEED 250 majors of mediocre quality at the expense of having 200 majors (or less) of better quality?  Can we do more, and be better, with less?

I would not suggest cutting academic programs, but there is so much was wasteful spending that goes on in a lot of departments. I would venture to guess that Athletics is the most efficient spender of their money.  I also think there is some truth to having too many academic departments.  Even if a school didn't have athletics, is it worth it to pour money into a poor program with little positive return?

Thanks for  "splainin it to me, Athena.  Now I understand why the EPA had to clean up the Cuyahoga river and the lake near Cleveland back in the '60s, cause all that damn tea was still rotting and causing such a smell.  Too bad they don't teach really history like this in schools any more.

My post was meant to be sarcastic (I took German in high school... Much rather cut French.  ).  That said, if I was President of the University I'd make sarcastic actions to tick off people like this...  Like completely moving the athletics budget under the marketing budget.

What really spurred on the EPA was when all that tea ignited and caught on fire.
