For those who need media recognition to validify your thoughts:

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/7801992/indiana-hoosiers-lead-revised-top-25-plenty-changes-elsewhere

Good to see, although I'd very much like to be in the 23-25 range to start next season.

Also listed in the top 25 pre-season  "snubs"

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/57867/vcu-cincy-among-new-top-25-snubs

Five more to watch:

Ohio: The Bobcats lost coach John Groce to the vacant Illinois job … and that’s pretty much it. As returning lineups go, you can’t do much better than this. All 10 of Ohio’s rotation players from last season -- which ended in a Sweet 16 finish, lest we forget -- are back in 2012-13, including star guard D.J. Cooper.

It looks like we're in that range based on the above. Only 10 teams (likely rankings 26-35) made the "snub" list. Ohio, Butler, St. Louis and VCU were the 4 notable mid majors.

Keep underestimating Ohio hoops.  I like it that way.

Not so much. Although hopefully Kadeem Green can slide right into Tyquane Gourd's slot.

Me too. Underestimated is far preferable to being the It Team.

And as far as the first link goes, I expect that from Andy Katz anyway ... I'm pretty sure he's never going to say anything favorable about us again.

So a final #1 ranking only lasts for 10 days now? I'm no fan of Kentucky, but the program earned that right to be #1 with the NCAA tourney win. For cripe's sake, at least let folks enjoy it until hoops start back up again.

Players may be leaving Kentucky, but schools like Indiana should not be named #1 now because of it.

And Michigan at #5? What will this mean for the infamous HELLO TOP 25! thread?

Yikes. I just clicked on the "initial rankings" link on the Katz post and he had a video from the night of the championship game proclaiming Indiana #1 hours (minutes?) after the championship. The Final Four banner is in the background!

Really? An entire season of accomplishments wiped out immediately after the tournament?

That's just low class in my opinion.

Unranked Ohio Bobcats: Too low

Every key player from the Bobcats' Sweet 16 run returns, and new coach Jim Christian will do a great job of replacing John Groce, who has left for Illinois. Christian, who had outstanding success at Kent State, knows his way around the MAC. And while 6-foot point guard D.J. Cooper is certainly a very talented and flashy player, the keys to this team may be shooting guard Walter Offutt, the team's leader, and multiskilled forward Ivo Baltic. This 29-win team was no flash in the pan.

This is from Fran Frischilla on Espn's website.  This is part of his response to Andy Katz's initial top 25.

Kentucky was #1 in the final 2011-12 poll. Preseason polls are a best guess at the season to come, not the season just played (particularily when most of Kentucky's minutes are gone)

Didn't Andy Katz once write a quote from TOS that Marin Bota had NBA potential?

Yeah, but the "NBA" was the Northwest Bowling Alliance most likely.

I get that. But when a final poll lasts for only 10 days -- or in this case -- a few hours, that just seems wrong. A team spends an entire season getting to that point to be #1 after all games are played and a major reporter at a major sports outlet wants to begin ranking the teams for next year? So the "preseason" starts immediately after the championship game?

I'm not buying it.

And even though those UK players are gone, the program and the fans should be able to relish in the #1 ranking for more than a few days.*

*Full disclosure: I detest Kentucky basketball.

Because it shows Andy Katz's lack of credibility. So we shouldn't take anything he says seriously.

How does it show a lack of credibility if he was simply quoting TOS?

Quoting someone shows lack of credibility?  If Katz had said that Ohio should be in the top 25 because they got Marin Bota you might have a point but he didn't.   As for the list even if one thinks that Andy Katz is the God of basketball knowledge it should be taken with an enormous grain of salt.  So much can and will happen between now and October that will render this list obsolete.  But for now it's all we've got.

Because good reporters don't write any old thing just because someone told them. Especially about a guy he had probably never even seen play.

In this case, yes. TOS was his pal and he quoted him about a guy who couldn't even get off the bench having NBA potential.

No, Kentucky is the defending national champion until the final buzzer sounds next year. What the polls say is irrelevant: they cut down the nets, they get the trophy, etc. This is a "way too early" projection for the 2012-13 season. Why is it out this early?...if I had to hazard a guess I'd say that its because ESPN still wants basketball content.

Sorry but that's crap.  When interviewing a head coach of a major college basketball team you don't decide not to report something just because you don't agree with it.  If he says something you report it.  Andy Katz is not a scout. He doesn't pretend to be a scout. He's a reporter. He reports.  When Sparky Anderson says that Torey Luvullo could be the best player he's ever coached I don't question the writer that reports it. I question Sparky Anderson.  If anything the fact that TOS said that Marin Bota was an NBA player makes it more newsworthy, not less.

In fact UK will be #1 this past season for all eternity, unless of course NCAA compliance catches up with them.  And that means Ohio will be #25 this season in the ESPN/USAT forever.  The columns being discussed here are nothing more than WAAAY premature predictions for next season.
