I agree with you...I dont think there would have been much pressure at TCU to win in basketball...at least for the forseeable future. Maybe after 3 or 4 years...okay, but we all know the reason why they joined the 12....football. As long as the football program won games and made a decent bowl every year with the occasional BCS bowl, I think the basketball team at TCU could stay around .500 in the big 12 and no one would say a thing...in fact, the coach would get a long term contract.
But to me thats the difference in the "BCS" vs mid-major conferences...right at or above .500 in a BCS conference with around 20 wins, and your team is in the discussion for the NCAA.
At a "mid-major"...anything more than 4-5 losses in your conference and you can kiss the dance goodbye unless you run the conference tourney. To me, thats pressure.
Thats why I think, outside of the few crazed alumni in Illinois, Groce stepped down in terms of immediate pressure to perform. All he has to do is get the team at or above .500 in the B1G and get a few OOC wins and make the tourney from every other year, or at worst once in the first 3 years, and he will build that program back after a few years.
