Not sure about this move for him IMO, as it probably would have been best to stay in college. Man, EMU probably set for another rebuild with the loss of Farrikhan and Bates now. They really haven't been relevant in the MAC since the late 90's. How did we lose to these guys again?

Was surprised he didn't declare before going to EMU. I give him a lot of respect for that. It didn't work out there. He clearly can't "carry" a team. Though who can? He proved he can score at will. At 6'10", he's a very intriguing prospect. He would be a solid fit off the bench in Cleveland, honestly. Fit right into their big lineup.

It's also great he's doing this from the MAC. Him and JP can go a long way to show recruits (and transfers) that you don't have to be at Alabama to be seen.

Best of luck kid.

I'm not really sure what he is at this point.

His eFG% is below the mendoza line, he shot poorly from 3 at a high volume, and while he can get whatever shot he wants, he doesn't make them at a rate to be a super efficient scorer at the next level.

Color me shocked if he makes it in the NBA.

I hope the best for him. My gut says he will get drafted, and hopefully high enough he gets some guaranteed time/money. He has talent, just seems somewhat inconsistent and raw (still). I honestly don't think more time at EMU where he's allowed to seemingly play with a constant green light on one end of the floor will benefit him all that much.

At least he knows what he is getting into. He surely passed through Ft Wayne on the bus rides from Ypsilanti to Muncie to play Ball State.

At the next level, he will be able to focus on basketball only. Time with a shooting coach daily will undoubtedly pay off. He will surely benefit from being free from the daily grind of getting his homework done, studying deeply and all the hours he has had to spend in school and academics on top of the hours of non-practice time lifting, treatment and studying opponent's tendencies.

Don't know Emoni, but I think it's safe for me to guess that he has never faced the daily grind of doing homework. Or studying deeply. Or spending a lot of hours on academics.

Not to mention that, after seeing him on TV multiple times over the last couple years, I'm not too confident that he's spent a lot of time in the weight room lifting.

If he can shoot like this he'll be playing for someone. Still love seeing this clip against Toledo.

How much time did you spend "studying deeply?" Honest question.

You have to look at the entire season, though. He had some amazing games, like this one vs Toledo. But after that game, he also had shooting games like 2/17, 3/13, 5/17, 6/18, and 3/14. If he can develop consistency, I can see him sticking with an NBA team. I'd think shot selection has something to do with it. The talent and possibility is clearly there, but he needs to be able to eliminate or minimize those "dud" games.

I just checked several recent mock drafts. None listed Bates, but only one of them included 2nd round picks.

I suspect that Preston has a better chance of having a successful NBA career than Bates. That first year injury hurt JP, but I think he has a much greater upside potential. Hey, but I'm biased.

Bates may sniff an NBA court as a 2-way player early on for a few games but dude will never make it. He can score in bunches but he couldn't play for an ex NBA guy and his team at Eastern was atrocious, in part, to his selfishness. Jason Preston is an exemplary teammate who makes everybody around him better.

ESPN's most recent mock has him going to the Wizards with 57th pick (penultimate pick in the draft).
