Sears can follow the footsteps of his protege by entering the NBA draft with one year left of college eligibility. Not sure he has the pedigree but if it's all about the money what is the question ? Oats will get a taste of his own medicine.

Not a chance in hell. Sears doesn't have the size or passing skills of JP.

U might be right. I'm sure Sears and JP are in communication.

Sears absolutely has NBA potential.

He will naturally be compared to Preston but their play-styles are very different. There are other NBA guards who are better comparisons to Sears style.

He regressed a bit this year in 3-point % which will hurt his stock a bit but his overall play was very good. I could see him testing the waters but returning for another season

If Sears makes the NBA, I will come back here and absolutely say I was wrong.

I don't think Sears is an NBA player. He'll get an invite to summer league next year and has a chance to have a solid overseas career.

But he's undersized and the closest thing he has to an elite skill-set (scoring) doesn't translate all that well at the next level for undersized players.

NBA point guards are basically universally big and athletic at this point, and Sears won't be able to guard that position and likely won't be able to get to his spots against bigger, athletic guards.

And he's just not a good enough shooter to play off the ball in the NBA given his defensive limitations.

Preston, at this point, seems unlikely to stick in the NBA. And he has an elite skill set and the athleticism needed in the NBA.

I was impressed with how Sears successfully drove to the basket and scored against the bigs in their last game. Still glad Alabama lost.

+1 Exactly -- I agree on both points.

In watching Sears at Alabama, it appeared his defense improved and his court awareness was excellent. I think that's why he started and got so many minutes. I dunno if he can make it in the NBA, but he's physically strong and smart.

Sears and JP two very different players.

Sears is a better shooter.
Sears is stronger.
Sears is a better driver/finisher at the rim.
Sears adds a unique element in that he's a lefty.
Sears will benefit from SEC exposure.

Preston is taller.
Preston is a MUCH better passer.
Preston is the ultimate floor general/team leader.
Preston had to come from mid-major obscurity.

Both have good handles.

Preston is a prototypical PG with size, though he's not a big scorer at the next level.
Sears is more of a combo-scoring guard, but he's undersized for the NBA.

Sears will get looks for sure. We'll see if he sticks as a 2nd round guy or not.

Sears is the same size as Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young, etc. Don't think that's an issue. But his athleticism and shooting % is suited for Europe IMO. I'll admit it if I'm wrong. Hope he returns to college.

Where Sears excels is using his body. He's MAYBE 6'0", but probably at least 200-215 - kid is sturdy. Built a little like Baker Mayfield. Not muscular, but just thick from top to bottom. He's great at driving and creating space and drawing contact with his body. His 2pt FG% actually jumped pretty significantly this year, while his 3PT dropped.

He'll make more at Alabama than maybe even in Europe. Especially next season when he returns in more of that focal, leadership role on a high-profile team.

Nothing wrong with - and I actually applaud - Armando Bacott. Max out in college, then try the NBA - if it doesn't work out - head to Europe with a little nest egg.

He's more like Kennedy Chandler who was a mid 2nd round pick and went back and forth between the big team and the g-league this season.

Sears would be behind in ability of another under 6 foot guard.

Both under sized for typical NBA and yet a WORLD of difference.

My point is there won't likely be two of that stature making the NBA in the next two years and there might not even be one at that size but if there is one, I'd bet who it would be. Markquis Nowell.....

Which leads to the second point--UCONN. Huge guards and BIG big men. The shift of teams playing 3-4 guards and a big turns back towards the traditional as UCONN waltzed through the field with that line-up and bench.

I do not think he has declared yet but I think he needs to have another good season at Bama for him to be selected. I believe he should be a starter as well.

I'd be stunned if he stayed in the draft. I don't believe I have seen him on any mock drafts. My assumption is this is one of those "go through the process, get feedback from NBA people, go back to college" sorts of situations.

which is what payers are encouraged to do -- look and get feedback, but do not hire an agent.

I think there was one mock draft someone shared here that had him in the 2nd round. Don't remember though.

Think he hasn't hired an agent - probably just going to gauge interest then go back to Bama if no teams draft him.

"I want to display my ability to play point guard," Sears told ESPN. "I have been playing point guard all of my college career so far, and this year I learned how to play without the ball in my hands. I would like to hear feedback on how NBA teams see me as a potential prospect."

This quote seems to ignore his freshman year alongside Jason Preston.

He probably wants to ignore his freshman year alongside Jason Preston. I still don't understand how Boals didn't play him more. When JP was out for four games, Sears was outstanding. Stop before typing at me that "he got to win a MAC Championship." I am not saying anything about him being successful for that year with the team but dude definitely should have played more. Maybe he had attitude issues but I never understood how he only played 10 or so minutes per game that year when JP was playing 39 minutes per game.

A player with zero scholarship offers who sends you a mixtape and is thankful to even be on the team while playing at NBA caliber and leading your team to the NCAA round of 32.

Vs.

I dunno coach, how's about 500k bones sound for me and the crew to bring and keep my talents in Athens?

Make sense yet?
