I have to say I am shocked at how little respect we are getting for our basketball program right now.  I realize we were in SI this week highlighting how much we have coming back and have had some blogs write about us, but from a national standpoint it is really quiet.

In this NBC blog we have a mid-major power rating of 11? (http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/10/mid.../) That is insane!  We won 29 games and went to the Sweet Sixteen.  I, unlike some, did not anticipate that we would be ranked Top 25 preseason.  However, I did not anticipate that we would not be one of the 40 schools to get votes.  This has solidified in my mind how blinded the media is to the big conferences and the perceived mid-major power conferences like MVC and CUSA.

Part of me is really happy we aren't getting a ton of hype.  It provides some motivation and hunger for our guys.  However, they deserve to get the hype coming off the year they just had.  Time to make sure the national media knows what Ohio is all about!

To most national writers, Ohio is the team that placed third in a division of the 17th-ranked RPI conference. Most people see the Sweet 16 run as a combination of March Madness, fortunate draws and a hot streak.

I don't think that's necessarily fair, but it's true. I'm certainly not shocked by the lack of ranking.

Coach Christian doesn't care about any of this.  I don't care about any of this.  It doesn't matter.  See today's article in the Messenger.

I saw that, and he's saying all the right things, but the fact is it does matter. The way a mid-major team is perceived throughout the year affects whether they make a postseason tournament and how they're seeded once they get there. You still have to perform on the court, but a mid-season ranking for this team could be the difference between an at-large bid and a road game in the NIT.

The season creates "a body of work," be it beguiling or bungling. Furthermore, the conference -- not just Ohio -- must demonstrate its worthiness beyond a single NCAA spot (and a 12-to-16th seed) through a succession of successes both during the season and within the tournament. Right now, we are the basketball equivalent of a One-Hit Wonder in the Billboard music annals.

You make a really good point, but I think pre-season rankings are not as important as the rankings after about four weeks of games.

If Ohio wins consistenly, they will get back on the national radar rather quickly because of last year's run and start getting some votes.

When we are undefeated in mid-December it won't matter.  (No green glasses, I am now being a dead serious realist)

Exactly what Jeff said.  A lack of ranking matters little.  Win, and attention shall come.

Monroe is probably having an aneurism seeing Michigan at #5.  Further proof that the NCAA Tournament is not the end-all-be-all.  Hang in there though, we have a long season ahead of us.  We wouldn't want you to miss it!

If we are undefeated in Mid-Dec. we will be ranked. You can take this to the bank.
