I guess I'd like to hear from some of the MANY voters that had us on their final ballot at the end of last year and didn't put us on their first ballot this year.  Concerns about coaching turnover is the only real legitimate reason in my book.

The AP doesn't release a postseason poll. It was the coaches who had us at #25 after the tournament. That's why I'm even more shocked that we didn't receive a single vote in the preseason coaches poll.
Do they change which coaches vote each season?

We weren't getting ANY votes last year in the final AP poll.  I'm pretty content at #38.  We should go 6-0 or 7-0 out of the gate, and by then we'll probably be very close to the top 25 heading into Memphis.

Yeah, I got my polls mixed up...I meant the dropoff of voters from the Coaches Poll.  I don't know how you explain taking a team off your ballot who basically returned their entire team.  The only possible explanations are:

1 - Coaching turnover concerns me.
2 - The new additions of all the teams I had move past Ohio are so much better than Ohio's incumbent players.
3 - I ranked them in the top 25 last April but didn't actually think they were a top 25 team.
4 - I didn't do my research and just assumed Ohio lost a bunch of talent.
5 (sub reason of 3 & 4) - I'm an idiot.

If we had won the regular season MAC, we probably would get more respect in the preseason polls.  I think some look at not winning the division but coming alive at tourney time (twice in three years) as not worthy of a vote in the regular season poll.  More incentive for the team.

For the non-big-six-conference teams, preseason polls are more about your reputation the last few years.  

Most of the teams in conferences like ours getting votes are very familiar:  VCU, Butler, St. Joes, Saint Louis, St. Mary's, Davidson, etc.

Reasons Elton Alexander put Ohio at #25:
1. Setting up an aritcle about how over-rated Ohio is after we lose first loss.
2. Was having trouble remembering the names of 25 schools.
3. If we lose to Akron, can immediately insert them as #25 on his poll.

Does anyone know if our alum reporter in Boise has a vote and if he included us?  I am told he's done so all year for football.

I disagree especially with the notion that "if we had won the MAC regular season title last year we would've been ranked."  Maybe I'm discouting the knowledge of those that vote, but I doubt most of them even remember this fact and if they did, didn't consider it. 

Bottom line, the MAC is too obscure and you simply forget.  Kind of surprised most voters just didn't take out the season ending Top 25 poll and use it as a basis point for teams they're not sure about.  But in the end, I think voters just forgot.  Name recognition and brand awareness are crucial for this type of stuff and until we start hanging out with better company, this is to be expected.

I'm sorry, but from purely a subjective point of view, when I glance at that Top 25 the only name that sticks out as not being a household basketball name is SD State.  Then maybe Creighton, but they have some hoops recognition.  Reputation and brand recognition is potentially one thought, but I'm not necessarily saying it is THE reason.  Just a thought as I wonder how and why?

Kind of like the nationwide polls for who's the best quick service food chain.  Often times you see Taco Bell and Wendy's simply because Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill, In & Out Burger don't come to mind as quickly if you're not familiar with them.

I think CG is pretty spot on. Only SD is the one without much hoops history. Creighton has been in my mind  since keeping a collection of COnverse basketball yearbooks beneath my bed as a youngster. I used to read every one cover to cover and memorize stats and players as a kid. Creigton has a long and rich history that is not lost on the press. These mags were,  of course, in my teens later moved and replaced by other mags which I rarely read the articles.and only caught a few key stats.
 
Murray State is a good example of sustained memory as they have been to the tourney more consistently than say TennTech or Tenn State. Even in the current meltdownand the loss of a key player they are considered in the poll.  Like it or not all summer long I have heard agents, coaches and writers ask why I thought JG got the job at IU (he he) based on his overall record. THe only reply I had was ."..he gets em ready when it counts". I think the coaching change has more to do with the ranking than does the return of players, especially when considering the overall record of these players throughout the seasons. Real Kudos to the Groce mindset of playing your best when it counts while working out the kinks, personality issues, execution errors and retention problems amongst other issues throughout thte season. I mean really, would anyone here be satisfied with winning MAC regular season championships and giving up NCAA appearances inthe tourney. WHo really remembers ( or cares) who won the MAC in 05, 10 and 12?

good point borna, I might have been overly optimistic in thinking that others would view JC as a slight upgrade to JG because of his track record of winning the regular season.

it could be worse, can you imagine making it to the MAC tournament final 6 years in a row and only winning twice? yikes. (we're 6-1 in the big game).

Until the reward for winning a regular season title is an NCAA bid, this is a great point. 

On the other hand, winning the regular season title, coupled with a solid Non-Conf schedule, and an at-large becomes a possibility. Otherwise, it generally is not.

This season at least, I would assume that a regular season MAC title would come with a NCAA appearance. Maybe I'm ahead of myself, but I only see 2-3 non-conference losses, and to win the MAC you usually need at least a 13-3 record.

25-6 or 26-5 SHOULD be enough to get us an at-large with our recent success. But then again, maybe I'm naive . . .

That record would be pre-MAC tourney so it would 27-7 or 28-6 if we made it to the MAC championship game.  I would have to believe that would be enough.
