I'm very interested in this.  I was having a discussion with another alum at Homecoming, and we both agreed that we felt a large portion of our fanbase has unreasonably high expectations.

Given how tough it is for a mid-major to make back-to-back appearances, that is my answer.  We haven't won the MAC since (I believe) 1994.  I'll take a MAC title and a trip to the tourney.  If we don't make it back to the Big Dance, I'd be dissapointed and that's where I'd likely call the season a 'failure'.  I know at least two members of this board who will probably says it's Final Four or bust . . .

What say you?

I think it would be interesting to see if people thought it would be a successful season if the team won the MAC regular season, but didn't make the NCAA.

Great point.  Unfortunately I can't go back and edit the poll.

So for the purposes of this poll, let's assume that if we won the regular season that we would make the tourney based on recent success and recognition (I'll be optimistic).

I tend to agree with where your head is at (let's win the MAC and get in the Dance). Though I'd also be willing to call it a success if we won a game or two in the Dance and didn't win the MAC title (much like the current senior class's Freshman and Junior years.)

Two things in particular would make it a "successful" season to me: winning the regular MAC season (Ohio hasn't done it since '93-'94) and 23+ regular season wins.  If we can do that, that'll be a nice set-up for the MAC tourney.  The win total may seem low, but the schedule is considerably tougher than last season.  Last season we played Louisville, and that was pretty much it.  Lamar, Terd, Northern Iowa, Robert Morris, UNC-Ashville and Oakland had good years, but the rest of the schedule really dragged down our RPI.  This season has a much tougher feel.  In addition to Louisville, there are road games vs. Memphis and Oklahoma, along with two good A-10 teams, St. Bonnie at home & at UMass.  Add in Oakland (road), Terd and RM along with Richmond, and this year's schedule is more formidable.  It may be difficult to have 10 wins before MAC play.

I picked round of 32, but am very reluctant to do so. Depending on our regular season performance and depending on our seeding in the NCAA Tournament (if we make it there), if we get a tough draw a win in the Tournament is not guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination.

I would be shocked if we didn't at least make it to the MAC title game.

I would be slighty disappointed if lost the MAC title game.

I would even less dissapointed if we lost in the first round.

Another tournament win added to the resume of this program is considered successful to me. However, back-to-back MAC title is pretty impressive, especially considering one team from the conference is most likely to go the Tournament anyhow.

All I can ask for is a trip to the tournament. From there, it's too random and too much of a crapshoot to really expect more.

Whenever you have your 5 starters and the top 9 players back the expectations are high.
High in terms of wins,  tournament wins, and being ranked along the way.
There really is no way anyone can dispute these expectations, really.

I went with round of 32. Successful and Great are two different things. Successful first for me would be either MAC regular season OR tourney champs. Any first round NCAA tourney win by a MAC team is a success. 25+ wins is definitely a successful season. More of any of those is Great!

This should be a real tough battle this year between 'Kron and OHIO. 'Kron is good, and they are tired of us taking the glory away from them. We will most likely face them 3 times again this year. The 'Success' and/or Greatness for both of these teams will largely be determined in those 3 games - especially the last game of the 3.

Regular season MAC championship is where we start.  The problem with one game elimination tourneys is that any team can get hot and any team can have a bad game.  See Duke and Mizzou.  One team can have an easier road and fresher legs the next game.  The MAC title in the regular season shows that we had consistancy, also not something we've had in a while.

With our talent, we should get into the dance.  I think we'll win the first game.  After that, we could run into the #1 overall seed and a buzzsaw.  But like JSF said, the tourney is a crapshoot.

Regular season championship and a berth in the NCAA Tourney is a success.  Any wins beyond that are dessert toppings...

How about DJ, Ivo, Reggie and Walter all receiving degrees from Ohio University?  How about no arrests or academic suspensions?   Those four have already inspired me and given me so many special memories they don't have to win a game this season.  I just want them to have something to be proud to put on their wall.

If they do decide to win some games  I really want a regular season MAC Championship.  I want another tournament win and for this senior class to have a winning record in the big dance. It would also give them half of the tournament wins in school history.

I totally agree hawaiian.  But I will disagree with the no wins this season.

I think it will be a great season with Christian and the return of 90% of the team and the addition of what seems to be great players.  GO BOBCATS!!!

Roughly what I was going to say.  Go dancing, and anything can happen.  Would love to see a regular season title, too, as it has been quite some time.

A successful season?  23+ and/or less than 10 losses (I didn't count the # of games).  One of the top 2-3 records in the MAC.  Trip to MAC tourney finals.  No off field troubles.

Now, if you ask me to define a great season, well that's different.  That has some sweet non-conference wins, championships, and an NCAA tournament appearance.

This is where I'm at as well.  I think the expectation is, and should be, to go Dancin' again.  Expecting advancement to define a successful season isn't really fair.  Too much depends on how well the match ups would favor OUr guys.

I'll add that I like this approach too, because I've often thought for OUr program, we should expect to be able to go around 22-9 or 21-10 most years prior to tournament play.  That's assuming 31 games.

I know this year, I'd expect 25-26 wins prior to conference tournament play.  I think it can be assumed that winning the regular season MAC Title will take at least a 12-4 conference record based on years past.

I must say I'm overly surprised by how grounded most are, at least by the poll results.  There are a few crazies, to be sure, but for the most part most people agree that a trip back to the dance is a reasonable expectation.  JSF is right on.  Just get there, and see how the cards play out.

If you voted for Elite Eight or Final Four, I really hope you're not dissapointed if that doesn't happen.  That would hardly be a letdown for me.

It's one thing to WANT us to make it that far.  Who doesn't?

It's another to use that hurdle as the defining point for a successful season, which is what the poll asked.

I'd love to see a regular season MAC Championship. That is the true test of the best team. And then of course an NCAA birth.
