Credit to Chicken George for bringing this up in another thread...but I've always had this weird obsession with spreading minutes around and the potential drama that could ensue.  Without sounding too sappy, I really like these guys and want to see them flourish, so when a kid is working hard AND has the talent to play, but isn't getting the minutes, I hate to see it.  I understand it is a great problem to have, but i just hope JC is able to keep everyone happy.

How would you distribute the200 minutes?  I understand we haven't seen enough of Wilkins & Green, butI feel like we know what we are getting.  I also understand each game is different, I'm just thinking on average.

Cooper - 30
Offutt - 30
Kellogg - 30
Baltic - 25
Keely - 25
Smith - 20
Green - 10
Hall - 10
Taylor - 10
Johnson - 5
Wilkins - 5

I hope you do this excercise, just to show how excruciating it is.  I absolutely hate giving those guys towards the bottom so few minutes...But I feel like despite the depth, we still need to ride the experienced vets during this potentially special season.

Just a few out of the box thoughts:

*I know you want to go "all in" this season realizing you never know what next season will bring.  Secondly, no athlete is going to want to volunteer to sit out such a potentially great year, but if you tell Ricardo or TJ you only see 5-10 minutes of PT per game this year (just going off your figures) wouldn't you consider redshirting one of them realizing they potentially double that amount in the years to come?  Yes, I know out of the box and you may need them and they may leave you if offered, but just a thought.

*If Green is anywhere as good as advertised, my guess is he plays way more than 10 minutes per game and really cuts into a few of those figures, that are already very low.

Andrew - those look pretty good. Here's my shot at this:

Cooper - 30 - 31.5
Offutt - 30 - 31.2
Kellogg - 30
Baltic - 25 - 24
Keely - 25 - 24
Smith - 20 - 16
Green - 10 - 12
Hall - 10 - 11
Taylor - 10 - 9
Johnson - 5 - 6
Wilkins - 5 - 5
D Mac - 0.3

OUr guard play is crucial, on O and D, so I see Cooper and Offutt w/more - from leadership perspective as well. Green most likely will cut into Baltic, Keely, and Smith.

I think this team did a great job last year of knowing their roles and embracing them, I would often hear someone say in the post game- my role is to.. xyz..

I'm sure they all want to play a lot but I think (hope) they also know that they can do great things if everyone plays their parts again this year. The 4 seniors (+Nick as a 3yr starter) have all earned their playing time and are going to get it. The other 6 should know that their time will come but right now its about getting those Ws.

You got to give Hall and Johnson more playing time than that.  I mean they were very excellent during the latter part of the season coming off the bench and providing great play.  Stevie also did too.  I think Hall, Johnson, and Stevie should see at least 10-15 minutes a game.  The starters can take that time to rest and recover and not have to worry about coming back in to "fix things".

This was why I couldn't build up any resentment towards Groce when he went for Illinois.

The man left the program in as good of shape as it's been in 45 years.

I think this will be true because big men expend so much more energy than guards do.  Guards are giving full effort but they don't have to battle the way big men do.  A four man rotation of bigs is ideal.

Christian has his hands full with a bit of a logjam this year. It's a good problem to have, but I can't imagine us going 11 deep all year. Will be interesting to see how the rotation evolves.

I actually think this is the most difficult part of the job for JC.  Recruiting is normally the biggest difference maker in college sports.  He was left with a fully-stocked cupboard when he arrived in Athens.

We have some relatively easy games, all at home, to start the season.  During November, he should get a feel for how certain rotations play together.  I saw some things I really liked Saturday, especially defensively.  Jon Smith is not very good offensively, but his defensive presence warrants playing time when four scorers are on the court.

It will be interesting to see if they can find the right chemistry.

Big men rotations also depend on the opposition. In some games guys are going to be called on defensively or offensively to produce vs a certain front line. For example, I would think that the extra fouls to give vs Zeke and the ability to draw him to the perimeter and guard will mandate the roataion for a particular game.

I feel like Jon doesn't get enough credit on the offensive end. When he's not moving his feet, he sets the best picks of our returning forwards, and he's aggressive on the offensive glass. Those are valuable things.

Green is a 20 minute guy.  Don't make me figure out where the minutes are coming from.

edit:
Here is the scrimmage...  Obviously this is tough to compare since it was just a scrimmage.  I really am hoping our team is good enough this year where we see blowouts to the point we are sitting guys.  I do not feel that is too crazy to expect.

Cooper 26
Kellogg 25
Baltic 24
Smith 20
Hall 20
Offutt 19
Johnson 16
Keely 15
Taylor 13
Wilkins 12
Goff 5
McKinley 5

Oh yeah, add my 20 minutes for Kadeem Green.

No criticisms allowed unless you make your own distribution of the 200 minutes. I love Rico/TJ/Stevie...but you cant tell me you dont want guys like Cooper and Offutt playing 30 minutes.

Are we going for average minutes per game? Because you have to consider that just because you list Cooper at 30 minutes per game doesn't mean he's going to play only 30 in a big game. I'm sure there will be games where he plays only 25 - hopefully many - because he's not needed the last five minutes. There also will be a few games where maybe a guy tweaks something or gets sick or has a foul issue. Those balance with other games where he plays 35 minutes.

I don't think I'm ready to give it a try, but here is last year's. Because some players don't play in every game and some games are more than 40 minutes, I've adjusted minutes mathematically based on percentage of total minutes played so that the grand total should add to 200. Who goes up and who goes down?

Cooper: 32.2
Offutt: 29.2
Kellogg: 27.4
Baltic: 27.2
Keely: 21.3
Smith: 19.4
Johnson: 13.1
Hall: 11.9
Taylor: 11.3
Goard: 5.6
Jacobs: 0.6
McKinley: 0.4
Goff: 0.3
Belton: 0.1

Obviously, Goard and Jacobs are gone, but that's only 6.2 to give to the new additions, so clearly some playing times are going to drop.

Agree much with what JSF said about Smith.

I don't much care who gets what minutes.  What I want is incredible effort and (defensive) pressure.  Guys can get 18 minutes but really make an impact and be happy to have the other 30 to rest (from laying it all out every second they are on the floor).

Belton is gone. Off the latest roster and no longer attending practice per Arkley.

Yeah I meant average, that's why I have DJ at 30 minutes...But obviously if we have a back and forth battle with Akron, DJ isn't going to sit 10 minutes.

It's really hard to argue any scenario that has less than 150 minutes for Cooper/Offutt/Kellogg/Baltic/Keely/Smith.  That means you have a max of 50 minutes to distribute to 5 guys - Hall, Johnson, Taylor, Green, Wilkins.  That's tough.

The person I am actually worried about in the sense that he may be frustrated with minutes would be Stevie. He had his minutes cut last year at the end of the year already and while he's our backup point guard, the writing is on the wall with Bean next year coming in and with D.J. getting the crunch minutes. He may be the 5 minute guy with no major increase next year.

With DJ & Walt both on the way out, I totally disagree with the idea of Stevie not seeing a significant increase in minutes next season.

I think he will see a big increase next year, but I don't know that he will start with Bean coming in.  As we have seen in the past (not just at Ohio), starting really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
