I've accepted the fact that we have become a joke.

I got on here last March and said Boals should've be hired (or, at least should've given more than a token interview) and nearly everyone shot me down and said Christian is the man. Uh, not so much.

At least we'll always have March 2012

Sorry, Miami, I was saying the same thing.  Just didn't see you on here too.  Boals should have been at least given a chance.  I just think Christian will do the same thing he did at Kent and that was bring in Junior College thugs.

Boals has been passed over for every job he's ever been considered for:

Fresno
Duquesne
Ohio

There's a pattern there. The guy is clearly not thought of as highly as most of you think.

The man has won more games from the bench than you guys have won on XBox, and yet you've got all the answers? You sound like Suckeye fans!

Needs to develop a toughness factor on the team.  This team made it to the Sweet 16 last year and had already made "great strides".

I did see one improvement - they did play with energy for the whole game.

I can't figure out how we don't figure out who has the hottest hand in the country on any given night we are playing and don't have someone on him like glue??? I gotta think that falls on JC. OUr opponents have done that w/Nick - they have figured out if you stop Nick the other 3 shooters can't make up the points because they just can't shoot the 3!

Good point.  The only guy we needed to cover tonight was Morgan.  There were no other UMass players in double figures.

Uhh, yes there was another guy in double figures in BOTH scoring and boards.  So do you blame Christian for Morgan scoring 35?

Eventually, when guys always seem to have a career night against you....it's time to start thinking there is a broader issue at play. Defense, and more specifically 3-point defense, has been atrocious this year. IMO, the #1 thing we have to improve.

If you'll recall, this was also an issue for much of last season as well.

But he's an OHIO alum, so clearly he was the best fit /sarcasm

All the "hindsight we made the wrong hire" talk is incredibly ridiculous for a few reasons.

1. No one can argue that Boals, or Dustin Ford... or even John Groce would be better than 7-4 with this team right now.

2. The losses that this board are going fairly nuclear over are pretty darn similar to the losses that we generally experience each season (let's remember last year's road losses in BG, EMU, and Toledo).

3. It's hilariously early. I'm not going to go pollyanna and say that this team is perfect, but the amount of "freak out" after 11 games in comical people.

I watched tonight, but not until the 2nd half did I start to pay attention to who we had on Morgan.  Kellog is my favorite Bobcat, but he and Walt have just been getting lit up by these "career night" type guys this year.  Did Morgan do any of his damage on Ricardo, because that's who I'd stick on guy like that who start going off on us.  Didn't recall Ricardo being on him when I started looking for it in 2nd Half.

Our 3-point defense last year was actually superb.  Like, really good.

It turned around big-time early in MAC play. But I recall we were towards the bottom of the MAC in mid-January after the Akron, BGSU, RMU stretch. Groce made a big point that it needed to improve, and the results certainly paid off.

We were 16th IN THE NATION in 3pt defense last year. I think you are mis-remembering.

Could be.  I just know that down the stretch, that was a strong point.  Which was why the Michigan draw was so perfect.  That was their strength, and we shut them down.

Many things I couldn't understand tonight, but the list topper was the last minute of the game.  It's a three possession game, 17 second difference between shot and game clocks, we play off the ball like we're throwing in the towel, then contest them when they go for a layup late in the clock like we're still playing.  Either you do or you don't.  Yes, they were shooting lights out from the line, but with that much time on the clock you at least have to try fouling early on at least one possession.  Instead, they wasted 35 seconds before stepping up to play D.  That decision would seem to come from the bench.  Really mixed signals there.

ALl you really have to do before you make a statement is look beforeyou post ......the facts are there .......Groce hung his hat on 3 pt defense from the day he walked through the door.

THis time last year we were getting ready for a home date.. THe headline read

Only thing I would add is maybe this team is not as good as we think they are and just going to be like they were last year.  They were a 9-7 or 10-6 MAC team.  They got really hot and played some good basketball in March 2012.  I guess that is what I am hoping for...again because it is obvious we are going thru the OOC part of the schedule playing VERY average!

Casper, you are getting "warmer".   We are a very similar team this year as last year!   We have most of the same strengths and most of the same weaknesses!   I believe that we will do better in the MAC regular season than we did last year, but we will probably not run the table and walk all over everyone!   We are not that talented!   JC will have this team playing with the aggressive, high energy style that will give us the best chance to compete for another MAC ring in the months to come.  It is a journey, a process to build a winning team each year.  What happened last year does not add points to our score board before the games start !
