Here's one that bothers me, especially with the NFL playoffs about to begin.  As far as I know, there's no such thing as 'trickeration'.  Heck, my iPad doesn't even accept it as a term.  Yet announcers love to use the term, rather than trickery.  I.e. The Bobcats used a little trickeration by handing it off and throwing it back to Tettleton down the sideline.

Enjoyed this gem post Purdue last night, had never seen it in print before although some of my southern Indiana and SEO buddies actually pronounce "our" that way.

I believe Al Michaels invented this one: "Player X is out with a knee."

Did he find a knee on the highway and is too mentally distressed to play? Did he grow a third knee and scientists are investigating? Is he dating a knee? What does this mean?

It's an implied knee injury. Not too hard to figure out.

Whether it's hard to figure out is beside the point.

Unfortunately, this lazy phrasing has become so common that I've had several young writers do it also. I change it every time to include the word "injury."

Gotta love Terd fans

this post  has a plethora of grammar, spelling and homophones.

this year Herrion has taken the basketball team down a black hole. WTF is going on? We went from being a preseason bubble team that should challenge memphis to getingt beat by deleware state at home and getting crushed by ohio. I don;t think next yr looks any better, we won't have any descent big men.

this one is also fairly precious

Was just wandering if you would reimburse $90 in tickets, $60 in gas? I figured that would be the least you could do after I wasted my day driving to Athens to watch your team get the mortal shi- kicked out of them because of your failure of coach!!

I never did like that license plate

Ahh yes the redundacy of the subject. My grammie would ne'er let us finish that sentence till we reconstructed it without the he, she or it.

"Alums" is not a word. "Alumni" is the plural of "alumnus," which is why I won't buy "Ohio Alumni" gear because I'm only one person. A singular female is an "alumna," and multiple women are "alumnae."  Ohio Alumna always warmed my heart.

I agree with your clarification but like fellas and gals and other similar words the common usage has garnered acceptance and recognition to the point it is probably not going away.

Yep. I justify my Ohio Alumni sticker by saying Tricia often rides in my car with me.

"Alums" actually is a word.  It refers to colorless astringent chemical compounds.  So certainly appropriate when used to describe Miami graduates.

I agree with all of these points, including the last one.  And, I disagree with borna.  I think proper Latin grammar is making a comeback!

I am not necessarily a nerd but I do like for society at large to have some standards to aspire to (not too or two) , or should I say....society at large to have some expectations and standards to which they should aspire?

Fore some Fokes finna throw a beat down on the mericun langwidge afo dey be aksing fo somewons permishun I am gonna be purdy vocal in defendin it and how we make use of spressions and wif words.

Believe me, in  my close circles,  conversational english is as poor or maybe worse than the written word. But I do not accept that our society should just remain silent and not comment.

It is disconcerting to me that we would just accept the gaffes in spelling and grammar as commonplace.....and a bit ironic on a board that is populated by and large with graduates of an institution of higher learning. I am not too excited about becoming grammar and spelling police but appreciate the placement of this thread and enjoy finding particularly funny examples of misuse not as a hit to the composer but for the humour found in a word or expression that is not close to the original intent and a society that accepts this as normal and acceptable .....but then I actually enjoyed reading the penultimate book on punctuation as I am a frequent offensive when it comes to use of run on sentences and lack of proper punctuation

In doing a quick scan of this thread, I estimate more than 50% violate the one space rule as outlined in "The Complete Manual of Typography." As an alum of such a fine institution, I am embarrassed!

Reminds me of this article. I don't want to be the spelling and grammar police either (I do, but I don't). I just feel we should want to get things right and know things. I don't like it when people justify their ignorance. One thing I've learned in my adult life is accepting correction is a big sign of maturity. It's not easy, but it's essential.

Great article, thanks for that. I learned from it.

I rarely violate the one space ......but I hardly ever finish my thought with just one period ....and my bad typoing is pretty commonplace. I apologize for that and the occassional O that is capitalized in the second letter of a word as my bwoken pinkie does not seem to move very quickly off the shift key.

Drags...how is it you got to your adult life before I did?

BTW, oh painted one, thanks for the article ....I love this line from the rambling indictment of what society is becomng....and it pretty much sums up most of the aura surrounding Athens that I love.... There was a time we didn't give a shit how popular something was, by the way; there was a time that "selling out" was considered the worst thing you could do.

I have met very few folks in Athens who give a shit about how the rest of the world does it and what is popular.....otherwise I would have met them in Oxford.

So do you mean penultimate by it's actual definition (next to last), or the frequently mistaken definition ("super" ultimate)?
