I guess we were lucky with the web experience.  Combined the best of both, good the good video quality from TWC and from what I am hearing the better commentary from the Miami guys vs. the cable guys.

This topic has been covered a few times annually on this board about Russ and Rob with the love 'em or hate 'em dichotomy.  I happen to be in the hate them group.  I'm not into the "shtick" mentioned above and find it kinda childish and embarrassing. But that's just me.

One thing I haven't ever heard mention is I feel like Russ's call is a little bit fast and busy for my liking. I know its a hard distinction to make but I notice a difference in pace between him and say an ESPN television broadcast.  I think the main reason for this is because on ESPN it's a telecast not radio.  Some details can be left out because the audience can see for themselves.  This is of course hard for Russ because the same audio is used for the video feed and on local radio. Either way I find the extra few words to be distracting and requires a lot of focus to actually listen to which I don't prefer.

Just my two cents.

You really do need the extra words on radio though. Try listening to a televised game with only the ESPN (or CBS, etc) announcers but 100% unable to see the screen. They don't provide enough detail to be able to visualize the game, and you quickly become lost.

Amen.  On radio, you have to be the eyes of the audience.  That means you use a lot of words.  I sometimes think that TV PBP people don't realize that much of their audience is visually impaired.  They sometimes aren't descriptive enough and even talk about other stuff (like ESPN's featured game of the week) instead of keeping focused on the game.

No I completely understand why Russ uses more words than ESPN.  I'm just saying I generally prefer the latter because I always have the benefit of seeing a lot of it for myself.

I think what made the Miami guys preferable for me on the web feed is the same thing that would make them less valued on the radio. But come on its 2013, even in the car you could get a video feed if you wanted (And werent driving)

Rob, thanks for taking the time to post all that great stuff.  Gives us more insight about how the business works.

Thanks to you and Russ for your excellent work on and off air.  I enjoy your stuff big time.  And keep the Donewald jokes coming.  I saw Darrel Hedric in Millett the other night and remembered when a fan in the Convo hit him in the back with a roll of toilet paper.  Now that's old stuff.

Wasn't it Donewald who was the the recipient of a pizza delivery during a game at the Convo. Delivered by, I believe, a longtime BA poster.

catfan28 and Pataskala . . . now I'm totally confused.  I really thought that I saw the name Joe Barry on the screen during the game when they showed the announcers.  So, can anyone tell me for sure the name of this dude?  Whoever he was he was very biased.  He did appear to be an x-coach from the types of comments he made.  Now that I think about it a I do vaguely remember a Joe Barry who played to Ohio way back when.  Not a big star or one who you remember as a big blast from the past.   For clarification I was watching TWC on my TV not the web cast.

P.S.  Yes, I realize that this Joe Barry is not Joe Barry Carroll, but thanks for the suggestion.  The latter guy makes it difficult to do a internet search for the former because he dominates the hits, even with Ohio and Miami qualifiers.

Joe Barry played for Coach Snyder in Athens, 62-65 or so. Is from greater Portsmouth. Coached and worked at Miami most of the years since. Has done their radio & TV on and off for years, though essentially retired from the radio full time last year. Think his son also played hoops at Miami.

He was broadcasting with Tim Bray, a former weekend sports anchor in Cinci who now does PR & TV stuff for the NASCAR track in Kentucky.

Joe Barry's son played at Ohio....his name is J. Barry (yes, just the letter J). After checking the media guide, he played from 1991-93 and wore #12. He played sparingly, but did see some time in 1993 playing with Trent. I believe he was back for the team reunion/recognition at last year's game vs. Miami.

That is, and will always be, one of my very favorite Convo memories.
