Story

I think they felt bad that he's won so many already this year so it's a "Co-POW" with Zeke.

The sad thing is I can actually see the corrupt-incompetent-lazy-uneducated voters giving the MAC POY to Chris Evans, Rian Pearson, or Zeke Marshall. That would be one of the biggest travesties in league history. Nothing surprises me at this point though.

People underestimate how good Zeke's been this year. Him winning the award would be much more deserved than a tragedy.

If they stick with their normal voting pattern Evans and Pearson have no shot at it.  It's usually the best player on the best team as opposed to the best player in the league. It's either going to be Cooper or Marshall.

Speaking of Marshall, here is how he stacks up in the 2000/900/650/300 run.

1,077 points
620 rebounds
83 assists*
48 steals*

* not a misprint

Single Season Highs

Pts
Cooper 552
Marshall 352

Rebounds
Cooper 198
Marshall 182

Assists
Cooper 263
Marshall 28

Steals
Cooper 93
Marshall 15

His candidacy rests on two things. One is shot blocking and the other is shot alteration.  He's been good but he's no where near as good as DJ.  The tragedy would be that DJ plays four seasons and walks away with zero POTY awards.

Not true. His advanced offensive numbers have been outstanding.

Agree with JSF and OUVan - Zeke's numbers are impressive for this year. Can't wait to see them against each other - DJ can really get into his head. I love the David vs Goliath scenario (though severely pains me to even think about Zeke & Goliath analogy).

I think Javon McCrea is a more complete player than Zeke.  He averages more points and rebounds than Marshall and only 1 less block per game.  He also is just about all that Buffalo has, so his points are harder to get due to all the extra attention he receives.

If DJ is not named Player of the Year, it should go to McCrea.  Someone else will probably win, though, because the award is historically a sham.

I don't know, I'm clearly biased but I think DJ is a lock for POY.  I know, I know, the award has been a sham and Leon should have won it but this year I just don't see how DJ doesn't win it.  Especially as the season winds down and his numbers (reached not projected) begin to spread beyond the Convo and BA.

I think it was reasonable that this past week's award was shared. Marshall did average 7.5 blocks per game, which is crazy.

As for player of the year, I think Cooper is the favorite, but it's also not unreasonable that Marshall should get some votes.

Cooper's numbers:
14.6 ppg, 8.2 apg, 3.5 rpg, 2.1 spg, 0.2 bpg, 3.6 topg, 44.1% FG, 35.0% 3pt, 69.6% FT

Marshall's:
12.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 0.6 apg, 0.5 spg, 3.8 bpg, 1.2 topg, 68.4% FG, 50.0% 3pt, 66.9% FT

Is this award based on the entire season, or more focused on MAC play?

Also, who was the last Bobcat to win MAC POY?  Bhunt?

I think Zeke is playing very well, but his numbers in MAC play are not as close to Coop's as they are on the entire season.

Trent was our last official winner although Jerome Tillman won it as a junior I believe from MAC Online or something like that.

What I take from this is our 5 foot 11 pg out boards one of the only 7 footers in the league. Coop for POY or Riot

I think they did a pretty good job of picking the MAC POTY up until 2005-06.  Since then it has been a complete joke with an undeserving player winning it winning it nearly every year since then, starting with DeAndre Haynes.

The Award will henceforward be known as the Cooper of the Week Award.

DJ can get into Zeke's head? That's not a tall order. Hell, D-Mac's Grandma can get into Zeke's head. Dude's got an in sign on his left ear and an exit only sign on his right.

its crazy isn't  it? after 3 seasons DJ had 512 rebounds to Zeke's 492. Zeke has yet to have more rebounds in a season than Coop did as a freshman (198).  He's currently on track to finish the year with 202. That is sad for a 7 foot tall, top 100 recruit.

If Cooper had maintained his pace after his first two season he would have finished with more career rebounds than Marshall. As it stands now Zeke in on track to finish with 694 rebounds to Cooper's 619.

Columbus Cat quoted UpSan's post on this year's rebound averages when he said DJ outboards Zeke but he either read the stats wrong or was thinking of OUVan's post providing Zeke and DJ's highest previous season totals.  Haven't checked OUVan's numbers but it is hard to believe that in the previous three seasons Zeke's rebounding total has never been higher than DJs, although DJ has certainly played more games and obviously rebounds well for a PG so maybe OUVan's numbers are indeed correct.  They usually are.

I think part of the reason Marshall doesn't have as many rebounds as you would expect is that he attempts so many blocks which puts him out of position for the rebound.  He is extremely effective in altering shots though and other players on his team are the beneficiaries of this.   IMO Marshall isn't as good as Cooper but he's still a pretty good player.  He's improved on offense but still can't take over a game and his passing leaves something to be desired.  The biggest problem I have with Marshall is he can mentally be taken out of games if things aren't going his way.
