I've always believed that a player should be awarded an assist when a pass leads to a teammate being fouled in the act of shooting and results in one or more made free throws. If this was the case I believe DJ would have had another 5 or more assists last night. Since we're on the topic, how about an assist for a pass that sets up a a pass fora bucket?

When I scored (very infrequently) I gave myself credit for an assist to myself.

Agreed!

Let's also keep track of +/-, refer to time both forwards and backwards in the period, and put down a new topcoat on the surface at every intermission!

Publicly available statistics in basketball unfortunately don't keep pace with the stats teams privately track. I know Groce's staff kept track of that stuff. I don't know if Christian's does. Basketball stats are, I hope, in the infancy of a revolution not too dissimilar to what we've seen with baseball. The stats we can access for the NBA are much more advanced and in-depth that what we get for college (there are a few reasons for this). Chances are we'll have to pay for better stats for a while, but I'm willing to do that and share it.

I appreciate the concept, but I also don't want to see a bunch of great players lose their standing by changing the definition.

Stuff happens. Things change. If we have a better way of doing things, that's a poor reason not to do it, I think.

Or you can just create a separate statistic.

That has long been discussed in this house. Unfortunately, the official book does not allow that. I know Tommy kept track of those in his head,  almost every game the first thing he would talk about was the assists that ended up in trips to the FT line instead of finishes or and ones.

assists are by definition only credited when leading to a feild goal, short of knowing if the FG would have been good I am not sure how you can credit an assist for leading to the foul....of course if the guy you passed it to went ahead and finished for the and 1 you always get the assist.

You could also argue that a player makes good passes that lead to shot misses. I would think that if a guy is leading the country in assists that lead to baskets he is also making passes that lead to FTs and shot misses. But I agree with bobcat-squared, seemed like every trip to the FT line vs. Akron was the result of a DJ pass.

I agree, JSF.  The issue is baseball, much more than any other sport, is easily able to hold each specific player accountable for their impact in the way of stats.  Other team sports have so many moving pieces that influence individual performance and it becomes harder to isolate and remove things that the individual player cannot control.  I think basketball can and has improved a lot of the team stats (turnover/rebounding rates, etc.) and has a few untapped individual stats out there...But for the most part, it is just an inherent advantage baseball has over other sports.

Funny that you mention this.  Since the Marshall game especially, I have made a point of counting DJ's assists as the game goes along.  It is easier with DJ than other players because his assists are right after I am wowed with an amazing pass.  I definitely noticed that this game a lot of those wow passes were ending up at the free throw line.

I agree on the importance of the hockey assist (passing to the guy who passes to the scorer) but I can understand that being much more difficult to keep track of.  At the NBA level, they have money to pay extra people to evaluate such things..  Lower colleges and especially high schools would have issues there.  Baseball is a much slower paced game than hoops.
