Did former Monmouth forward Myles Foster, now in the portal, visit out campus this past weekend? I haven't heard anything. Was hoping he wouldn't leave Athens without committing to us.

Posted this in portal thread -

I was told he visited last week. However, he also had a zoom meeting with GW staff and visited Temple this past weekend. It’s been posted before — but his Twitter activity has consisted of liking the Shereef and Ike commitment posts but nothing of that nature as it relates to the other schools recruiting him.

TBD for now.

Believe he is likely still evaluating his options for other schools including us. Crossing my fingers he commits soon but still plenty of time.

Based on Foster's recent likings of player commitments to Ohio on his twitter, it's safe to assume that it's more of a question of when he'll commit than if. Then again, crazier things have happened.

Decision day is tomorrow (Friday). Dare to dream. Would be a monumental get and check off so many boxes.

Have to believe Boals has told him you start from day one and you are getting 30+ minutes per game.

Not sure how the minutes shake out with the other three schools in the running.

I could be wrong, but I doubt Boals promises any player anything like that. He might say it's likely you start if you practice well and I have a great expectation of you getting major minutes, but I doubt seriously he makes an outright promise of starting to anyone or minutes to anyone.

When we’re in desperate need of a competent big, you make those promises and I’m sure that Boals did in this case. If I were Foster and I heard anything otherwise; Ohio wouldn’t be in my top 4. He’s not going to go from leading scorer at one school to not being guaranteed to start at another at the same level. Foster has all the leverage.

I agree with OCF on this. First, what does a 'guarantee' mean? If he starts struggling, is the coach sworn to 30 minutes a game? If somebody outperforms him in practices and in games, are they unable to infringe on his minutes because they were originally guaranteed?

What I would imagine is closer to the reality is that Boals tells players how many minutes he sees available from the changeover of the roster. Maybe he tells Foster or whomever that he realistically sees 30+ minutes that he needs to account for from their position and they're who he sees filling that if they join the team. However, I doubt there is an outright binding guarantee.

I agree. If we think portal guys like Foster don't have leverage, we are kidding ourselves.

I'm fine with Foster but a little uncomfortable with the gushing excitement. Sure he is a big with D1 experience...but Monmouth was rated about #340 in the country and his numbers & size aren't amazing. I know finding a big is very difficult...we really struck gold with DW. Hopefully Foster takes it up a few levels playing in a better system.

Dwight’s 19/20 JMU team finished 9-21, so probably not too far off from where Monmouth rated this past season. Dwight’s also only and inch taller and ten pounds heavier. Foster is a stronger scorer now than Dwight was when he transferred; and 9rpg to 7rpg isn’t a huge drop. It’s a pretty fair comp. All said, I still think Foster is headed to Illinois State.

Not a chance in Hades I (or Boals) guarantee anybody anything. Ever.

You just don't do that. Unless you want to turn into the NBA where the inmates run the asylum and coaches are essentially figureheads because they're beholden to honoring promises to players. Great way to completely decimate morale and teamwork. What do you do when a "promised" guy starts struggling? Start him anyway at the detriment of the team? Bench him and risk a disgruntled player and mutiny? No. You don't do it to begin with.

Nor do I want a guy who's only willing to commit if given promises.

What you guarantee is an opportunity. Practice well. Prepare well. Lift/condition well. You'll earn the starting spot and PT. Plenty of minutes and stats available.

And Myles Foster, while I'd welcome the addition as he seems like a good player and fills a need for us, isn't greater than Boals or Ohio. If he decides he wants to come to Athens and compete great! If he doesn't, it's not the end of the world.

We're not talking about Gary Trent 2.0 here.

This discussion is all for nothing. Foster is not matriculating to Athens, per a reliable source.
