Middle Tennessee will remain in Conference USA instead of further pursuing joining the Mid-American Conference, the school announced Wednesday. MTSU and Western Kentucky have been under consideration by the MAC for expansion. WKU has been far more eager to join the league, while MTSU had been hesitant.

I remember these articles. They were published same day the MAC announcement of not pursuing expansion — which didn’t even sound like it was ever in consideration. Always seemed to me like MTSU was trying to save face more than anything, since the MAC was only speculated to be considering WKU realistically. As stated below.

FAU's arena has a capacity of 2,900. Almost every arena in the MAC is at least double that size, some are even 3 to 4 times bigger. Just another example of how you don't need a massive arena to be big-time team/program.
Don't you think FAU is going to use the Final 4 run to push toward building a larger arena? They are moving into the AAC next season too. Ohio defeated Kentucky and Louisville in the tournament before building The Convo.

Since George Mason's run to the Final 4 mid majors as I've observed have made it deeper into the tournament. The bigger change I'm seeing is the ability of non-traditional basketball focused P5s like Kansas State and Miami Fl able to win in the NCAA tournament. Kentucky vs. Kansas State at one time was an automatic for UK with their mystique. Miami Fl win over Indiana. Alabama having the #1 team in the country but often they are fairly decent out of the SEC. TCU in the tournament as a 6 seed.

Michigan State and UCLA were the only P5 regulars to make the Sweet 16.
FAU is leaving what is left of C-USA? I've said it before and I'll say it again right now. MTSU will rue the day they blew off joining the MAC. WKU should be furious Middle bailed on that package deal that would have the MAC into the Nashville sports media area. What a screw up. All because Middle didn't want to pony up a relatively tiny million bucks exit fee to leave C-USA. FAU apparently didn't have any trouble paying it.

WKU and Middle Tennessee didn’t blow the MAC off, the conference just decided against expansion. The speculation was the current ESPN deal the MAC has; wouldn’t grow with the additional new teams. The same revenue from it would have been divided 14 ways instead of 12.

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/32600959/m...
I wouldn't rely on anything ESPN publishes to get the real story of what happened. WKU was ready to leave, but weren't going to go unless they had a buddy to come along with them. I've heard the MAC originally pursued WKU and Marshall, but once Marshall decided to join the Sun Belt, MTSU was the next option. MTSU absolutely did not want to join the MAC because it felt it was too Southern and the travel would be an issue. They also very cheaply didn't want to spend the exit fees.

The MAC may have told ESPN that "no we decided to stay at 12" which is a lot more diplomatic than saying "MTSU blew us off."

That articles seems to confirm it was both or none. I live in the Nashville-Murfreesboro area and all the talk in sports circles was WKU had one foot out the door and was excited to be joining the MAC while MTSU dragged their feet and was too cheap to come up with a million bucks to move since they were already on the hook for many millions for some new sports facilities. The two bad decisions in this part of the country: MTSU blowing off a move to the MAC and the OVC not giving North Alabama the time of day when UNA went D-1. The OVC is now a shadow of it's former self. Lindenwood??? Who the heck is Lindenwood??

Do you have any articles to share about MTSU not wanting to join/spend fees? I just never saw anything with that argument. The tone from MTSU’s side in those articles came across as feeling spited to me and over extending to prop up CUSA.

Regardless of who dropped the ball, it’s something I wanted to see happen. I can’t imagine MTSU truly being elated by the likes of Jacksonville State, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston State. Seems like more of a geographical nightmare travel wise than to any MAC schools.

Great quote here from FAU coach Dusty May:

“I don’t know if we’re allowed to say this—NCAA, I’ll take the Level 3 violation,” May said. “We close-scrimmaged Nova Southeastern, who just won a National Championship today. They’re the best-pressing, hardest playing team we’ve ever seen. And when we beat them in a scrimmage, we said we’ve got a chance to be pretty darned good.”

Nova Southeastern finished a perfect season and won the D2 National title.

Speaking of football Ohio is playing FAU and SDSU in the non-conference next season both of whom the Bobcats defeated last time on the gridiron.

Without The Convo to draw them in and a 3,000 seat arena instead I doubt OU would have made the tournament more than once in the past 40 seasons. Facilities for a place like Ohio is important because its all they really have.
I’m not sure a 13,000 seat arena that is normally more than 60% empty doesn’t seem like it would be a big draw to a player.
If that was the case, then why does Akron, Kent, Toledo have more recent success and a better history of recruiting? Facilities are important, though just having a big number isn't quite the draw. A brand new facility, a state-of-the-art facility, something like a 6,000-9,000 seat field house would probably woo far more recruits than people who are in awe of the cavernous convo.

Did you see any of the Youngstown State games? Their final game vs Detroit and the NIT game vs Oklahoma State was more electric than home game I've ever seen at OU, aside from maybe Gary Trent Day vs Miami. 6K seats. Probably 5K in the building. Raucous. Same story in Kent. I hate their gym, but when you're inside you cant even hear yourself think. 3,000 feels like 10,000 right on top of you.

OU draws 8,000 every random blood moon and it feels soulless. Platinum seats will still be empty unless its a 3pm game on Saturday, and that's only if the historical society meetings end early.

It's also why Ohio State basketball games are dull. They get 15,000 in the building and it feels like a womens high school basketball game. You can hear a mouse fart in the upper deck.

I’ve always felt like the lack of a crowd has more to do with sports being secondary at OU. Students just aren’t THAT interested. I mean, I didn’t attend my first game until my senior year and that was as a marketing intern. I became a huge fan of the basketball program that year and on after the Sweet 16 run.

It’s going to take multiple years of success for it to stick with most students. Otherwise, it’ll just be “cool” if the team makes a tourney run every few years, but that won’t be enough to draw a consistent crowd imo. The party culture and Court Street will always come first for the majority.

Lack of crowd is relative, as OU leads attendance almost every year in both sports, but you're not wrong. It's definitely a challenge to get people to go to an OU football game (even when we're good) vs Directional Michigan when Ohio State is playing Notre Dame at the same time.

And I complain about this every chance I get - which is often - but the cameras in Convo don't do us any favors either, so you really don't build that excitement at home or watching the game on TV. You don't build feel that atmosphere. Even a bad crowd at the Convo has 500-1,000 students filling the entire lower sideline. Turn the camera to the otherside, away from the benches, and onto the student section and the entire atmosphere changes. Kids can easily watch the game from the bars, and it looks boring most of the time. Make the game look exciting, like it's worth being apart of and maybe you get a couple hundred extra butts in the seats. Build some momentum.

They could curtain off some of uppers? Even big programs have done it.

In the meanwhile, how to get more locals into seats.

First, stop charging more at the door if they don't use the app to buy tickets. Second, charge a very discounted amount for games like Stetson and Alabama State. That way a family of 4 or 5 from The Plains can bring their wife and kids to a game. Let parking at Peden be free at those types of games. And discount popcorn and soda at those games. How much does popcorn and a coke full of ice cost the school? I would guess not very much. Come up with a catchy name for the discounted nights. Make people feel special that they showed up.

People might even break down and buy season tickets if things are promoted right.

Cleve St was a Saturday
Alabama State was a Sunday
Clermont was a Wednesday
Stetson was a Saturday

That's at least 4 times not conflicting with high school sports. (or church Wednesday nights) Plus games around Xmas and NYE when middle/high schools were out. Plus a couple of MAC games were on Saturday.

They should expand on the Hardwood House, and make it a serviceable bar with food. I've been to multiple weekend games and it wasn't even open. We pulled chairs down and sat with friends with the lights off. It was weird.

It doesn't need to be BW3, but for those people coming in after work, even before going out - some elevated type diner food, something easy, but solid - burgers, hotdogs, Goodfellas pizza, Big Mama's, any way to get some of the locals involved - some solid craft brews. Nice welcoming place to sit down and relax before going to your seat. Always open. Always available.

Also, get Jackie O's to make a convo-only beer. Give it a silly name. Hell, call it Hardwood House. Roundhouse on Richland. Little Fish too. Take advantage of our great craft brews in the area. I'm sure they can make a small pony keg to start.

There is a lot of low-hanging fruit as far as improving the gameday experience I think they can do.
