While it does absolutely suck not to land another big, I have to think the continuity maintained this offseason is going to be huge going into fall practice and the non-conference. Where a lot of other teams with new faces will still be figuring things out, at least we've got a pretty decent handful of guys who have played a lot of minutes together. There's not going to be many teams that can say that.

Plus Shereef has logged major minutes for a big time program and Ike is a Big 10 wing. Toss in a reinvigorated IJ (we hope) and another year for AJ Clayton and Hadaway and we should be fine. I also believe Wiz will be serviceable.

There are still a few decent (?) power forwards/centers in the portal who didn't land anywhere yet. It looked like an international 7-footer at Virginia was still up for grabs. Four stars originally.

Maybe some of the guys are asking unreasonable NIL amounts they don't deserve?

I'll sit this one out. It's better for my mental health.

That or some could require a waiver after multiple transfers. Davion Bradford of K State/Wake is an example of that. However, we haven’t been linked to as many bigs as I thought we would. So, who knows what the staff is looking for when it comes to size.

We’re not even one of the schools who have reached out to Samba Diallo, grad transfer who Boals offered out of HS. 6’7, but seems like a someone we can use.

Could this be the player to be named later in the BVP trade? I'm asking for Fear Leon. Got give the man some hope!

Thanks OCF....with each passing day of no big man signing...I'm getting closer and closer to getting an emotional support dog and naming him Dwight Wright (that's an old joke for those who remember...still love ya Russ E).

If that player to be named later is Ralph Sampson...I'm all in. Even with big Ralph at 63 years old, I'd love for him to be on the roster for the upcoming season. I bet Ralph can still set a screen without moving his feet.

While I understand the want/need for a big man, let's be realistic. The best big man in the league is Freeman at Akron and he's listed at 6-7.

With the big at Ball State gone, name another solid/quality big man in the MAC? The two next best are likely the transfers at Toledo and BG. After that ... ???

Just saying...

I completely agree with this. While we are far from having the best big, tell me another team with better wings than we have (Shereef, Jaylin, Miles, AJB, Elmore and Ike).
Shereef: Played for a national title contender and was a key in their Elite 8 run on the team that beat us
Jaylin: All MAC First Team the second half of the season
Miles: Veteran, consistent
AJB: Star in the making
EJ4: Bullish and really improved as season went on
Ike: Untapped potential--may be ready to explode. Four-star type that Boals excels at getting the most out of.

I’m with you on our guards and wings. It’s a big reason why I don’t think it’s a huge deal if we fail to land a solid forward. Like I said earlier, we’d all love one more quality big but this team is built to be a fast, guard oriented squad that continues attacking with our depth. This is a top 100 team as it stands right now regardless of any potential additions.

For me it was more of the addition of a competent big gives us a ceiling of a top 50-75 team. E.g. if we had landed Foster. That said and as constructed, I also think this is a top 100 team easily capable of winning the MAC (at least that’s my expectation, for better or worse).

I dogged him all season for his shot selection, but Clayton can be the big we need just by changing his decision making. Instead of taking 136 3PA (32%) and only 71 2PA (63%), flip those numbers and play closer to the basket. Which in theory, should increase his FT attempts — he only took 39; which is wild to me. Considering he made 35 of them. His game is just backwards.

One would think this could be changed pretty easily by just showing him the numbers. He can still take a 3PA if it’s there, but don’t make it the focal point like he tried to last season.

I think that this is a very good analysis. Maybe you should ask our inside man (pun intended) BTC to mention this to Boals. While I'm being sarcastic about that last sentence, I do think this is an excellent idea. More inside shots and, therefore, more foul shots where he has an excellent percentage.

I know it's asking a lot, given the player comparison, but it would be amazing if his career/game took on a BVP-type arc. If you remember, in his Freshman season (2nd year in the program), BVP was primarily a 3 point shooter. In the following years, he developed a really good post game and turned into the kind of player that was a threat all over the offensive end. Clayton has the size and athletic ability, in my opinion, to do similar things.

This is what I was hoping for this past season. Clayton def has the skill-set; he just needs to fine tune his game to maximize his efforts more. He’s not incompetent, he was just choosing to be more of a 3 point shooter than he actually is. Which led to him being removed as a starter imo. If he shifts to 70/30 or 80/20 inside, he becomes a much more productive player based on numbers.

Regarding Clayton, why do people feel that just because you are tall you automatically become a post player?

His numbers paint the picture that he’s more effective closer to the basket than away from it. Being 6’8 and 225lbs just further suggests he should have more of an inside presence.

Agree. Decades ago I recall Denny Rusch shooting from top of the key and he was 6'8". And unless I am senile, his outside game was better and more productive than in close.

I'd take the same from Clayton if he can just up his percentage from 3's.

The fact we brought in no big guy off season should not force Clayton to a spot he may be not best suited for. The bigger question is why we didn't bring in someone if Wiz isn't the guy for that spot.

Denny Rusch's best game was trashing talking and dirty shots at opponents when the refs weren't looking.

Please help me understand your logic. We have two years of data on Clayton. When he increased his 2PA attempt volume (26 to 71) between freshman and sophomore year; his 2P% went up 10%. When he increased his 3PA attempt volume (he actually doubled it exactly from 68 to 136) in that same span; his 3P% dropped 6%. Since he increased his 2PA, his FTA went up — shooting 90%.

Are we just going to ignore the numbers and assume we’d be forcing Clayton into a spot he’s not best suited for because….? Clayton is statistically more productive playing closer to basket than he is from behind the arc.

Exactly, and you clearly laid out your reasoning for it in your previous post but some people still like to pounce at a chance to ignore sound logic and discussion and get a jab in.

I am a big believer that Clayton could be a better player if repurposed a bit. I like what I've seen from him in the paint.

Not all 2PA are created equal. I didn't get to watch a ton of Clayton last year, so I don't know, but those numbers don't actually say much about his ability in the post.

In fact, the fact that Boals increased his usage from three so substantially seems telling; if Clayton is an effective post player, why are his 3PA numbers ~2x his 2PAs? And, of course, not all 2PA are post touches -- so Boals has chosen to use him in the flow of the offense from behind the arc much, much more than he has in the post. That tells me something.

There's good NBA data available on types of FGA, but suspect that's not available for MAC players. Anybody know of a resource?

Here's the link to looking at player's shot chart -> https://cbbanalytics.com/tools/shot-charts . Just type in Clayton's name. You'll see where all of his shots came from this past season. His 2PA all came in the paint. Further suggesting he has ability in the post and should play closer to the basket.

I don't doubt Boals encourages Clayton to shoot the 3. However, if he was satisfied with how Clayton was playing as a whole; why was he benched in favor of BRod (smaller and statistically less productive)? That should really tell you something.

I'm happy Myles Foster isn't on our roster. The more 3's Clayton takes the better off we are.
