Beating Ron Harper and  Miami in Oxford(1986) is number one.

I think I remember(maybe) that one. Rich Stanfel(or Rich Standstill as we called him back then) got fouled at the buzzer and made 1 of 2 free throws to win by one. I think Miami was ranked at that time too.

Geno dribbling it out vs. Miami was a big one.

BG game this same year (I believe) was also a 10+ point comeback, and a sweet ending.

I concur.  BG was so good that year, and it was one or two OT's  Yesterday's game is a top 5 all time for me dating back to 1995. The Tommy buzzer beater, the BG game, there was the St Bonnie game. Last year's Miami game was special.  My bottom line:  LOTS of great memories and great times.

OhioCatFan,

Agree.  I'm with you all the way.  That is the most thrilling and unexpected ending I've witnessed in any
basketball game...anywhere...and I've seen a lot of games.
Two minor corrections:  Nineteen sixty-one.  Bill Whaley inbounded the ball from midcourt, on the south side of the floor.  I have a copy of the POST showing Bunk Adams soaring above big Harvey Hunt, who also played tackle for the Kent State football team.

Yes, I didn't state that well.  I made it sound like Whaley was behind the basket.  He was, as I recall, not at half-court but passing it in from the right sideline (as you face the back of Grover, or as you put it correctly the "south side").  I had a general admission seat right behind the basket in question.  I had almost the perfect view of that play.  I was a student at Athens High School at the time.  I said "circa 1962" because I couldn't remember if it was '60, '61, or '62 and I was too lazy at that time to look it up.  Thanks for giving the exact year.

Is there any way you could scan that picture (and story) from The Post and post it here and/or send me a copy?  I would love to add that to my collection.  I bet other members of Bobcat Nation would like to look at it also.  It's truly an Ohio hardwood legend that should be transmitted to the younger generation.

Fun thread. My OU days date only to 1990, so I can't weigh in on the oldies. I'd have to rank Tommy's No. 1, though I wasn't there. I was happy to be there Saturday and at the game when Geno dribbled it out vs. a good Miami team (big crowd going wild at the end); those two were special.

But if I can cheat...
If you include ALL games and focus only on the endings, Leon's tip-in to win the MAC title in '05 -- I can still see it hanging on the rim -- is the best. Though I'd love to see video of Jamerson switching from 3/4 court!

I feel like there has to be one from that 04-05 team. We seemingly came back in every single game that year. I wanna say Western Michigan, BG or Miami.

I was standing right behind the basket with the 110 on that one.  Kind of a "did that just happen moments".  After graduating, I was talking with another OU grad who was stationed overseas in the military and saw it played on sports highlights.

I still can't believe the team was as bad as it was with future NBA players Dave Jamerson and Snoopy Graham, as well as Dink Whitaker.  Finished 9th out of 9 MAC teams in 1988 or 1989.  They had to play the "Play-in game" for the MAC tournament (8th team vs 9th team for right to play #1 seed) and the play in game was in the morning, they won and played the 2nd game in the evening.  I think it's the only time an NCAA basketball team played two games in the same day.

There was, because that was the first time Jeremy Fears did a back flip. It was an away game and in looking at the schedule from that year, I believe it was at Detroit, because that's where we won by 1 point and the season kind of turned after that, we went on a win streak. The way I'm remembering it, we had come back from behind and Jeremy made a shot in the last few seconds that gave us the lead. Timeout was called and he did a backflip on his way to the huddle. We held on in the last few seconds and won the game.

Fears hit the game-winning three pointer right at the buzzer and then did the backflip. I remember there being video of the final play on the official site. I'm pretty sure both Mychal Green and Terren Harbut did not play due to injury.

That was the bracket buster game that year, @ Detroit and as others have said, it really turned the season around and gave the team confidence to finish strong and head into the MAC tourney.

The video they posted was from way up in the rafters and was the team's game film video as it was the only video they had filming the game.  We've gotten spoiled with the online feeds, WOUB and OhioBobcats.com video highlights!

To add to my earlier post on this thread: If we were to open this up to include postseason games, I just remembered the 1983 (or '84?) NCAA Tourney game that ended with the putback at the buzzer. Don't even remember the name. That was before I was following OU (still in middle school), but with the magnitude of the game and the way it ended, that'd have to get consideration in a greatest-ending-to-ANY-game discussion.

That was 83 and it wasn't a put-back, it was a leaner in the lane by Robert Tatum off of a length of the court pass. Illinois State had just taken the lead with seconds to go.  I nearly broke my hand in the College Inn on the ceiling when the shot went in.

Indelible memory from that game:  WOUB carried the game as part of their pledge drive and Partusch commented on Bob Donewald's red plaid sportscoat....after the basket, there was a shot of an OU cheerleader who was  shouting "We're Back!".  Big night for brews in Athens.

There wasn't a final buzzer beater or anything but the 4OT win against Akron in 2003 goes on my personal Top 5 list and I think it should still count as a "game ending" because of all of the buzzer beater type plays that happened to get it into OTs 1-4.

If memory serves Thomas Stevens capped off a mini-run with like 7 seconds left to get us into the first OT.

bigtilly,  I never saw such a totally off-balance shot go in at such a crucial time in a game.  I remember watching this on TV live and I really couldn't believe it.  I also remember on replay from a different angle it looked like he was practically horizontal but still in the air when he let the shot go.  Quite an exciting finish that's for sure.  Not, however, a regular season game.

I completely forgot about that game. I had a French exam the next day. With every overtime, I was calculating a half-letter degradation.

And here's a random musing on that game from a hyperbolic, sloppily-written yet somehow charming website:

1983 was the first year we won the MAC tourney (Danny Nee).  I was a teenager and was at this game in Tampa with my Dad, unbelieveable experience.  We stayed at the team hotel and if anyone knows any cheerleaders from those days there's a guy who still owes me some poker money!  Robert Tatum still stays in touch with my Dad who was a Dean back then and kind of took Robert under his wing.  Good guy, he was a freshman that year and made that shot after a tip/deflection from the great John Devereaux, Tatum may also have been fouled on the shot:

No one has mentioned this game since the original qualifications for this thread have somewhat changed!  BG and Ohio tied for the regular season in 1972 (my freshman yr.)  This was pre-MAC Tourney and to decide who would represent the MAC in the NCAA there was a playoff game to break the tie played at BG.  It was a great game going into overtime w/ Tommy Corde scoring 30+ and hitting a big shot at the end of the game to send Ohio to the Big Dance.  A couple buddies and I drove to BG from Athens (weeknight) to watch the game and I remember I had an 8am final scheduled the next day.  We won in overtime(night game by the way), went back and I managed to survive the final the next AM.  It was a great beginning for my time at Ohio!

That video vs. UNC:  Hunter, yet Esterkamp, fearsome in headband, was player of the game.  But mostly FLOMOGENIZATION.

Add Flomo to this year's team and we fly.
