OhioCatFan,
Agree. I'm with you all the way. That is the most thrilling and unexpected ending I've witnessed in any
basketball game...anywhere...and I've seen a lot of games.
Two minor corrections: Nineteen sixty-one. Bill Whaley inbounded the ball from midcourt, on the south side of the floor. I have a copy of the POST showing Bunk Adams soaring above big Harvey Hunt, who also played tackle for the Kent State football team.
Yes, I didn't state that well. I made it sound like Whaley was behind the basket. He was, as I recall, not at half-court but passing it in from the right sideline (as you face the back of Grover, or as you put it correctly the "south side"). I had a general admission seat right behind the basket in question. I had almost the perfect view of that play. I was a student at Athens High School at the time. I said "circa 1962" because I couldn't remember if it was '60, '61, or '62 and I was too lazy at that time to look it up. Thanks for giving the exact year.
Is there any way you could scan that picture (and story) from The Post and post it here and/or send me a copy? I would love to add that to my collection. I bet other members of Bobcat Nation would like to look at it also. It's truly an Ohio hardwood legend that should be transmitted to the younger generation.
