Anybody know anything about the Kretzer kid who went 5 for 5 from three last night?  I know he's listed at 6'7" 210, went to Waverly HS where he averaged 26 and 10 his senior year.  Was he on OUr radar?  What offers did he get?  He looked like a maker to me.  And from OUr backyard, Convo was nothing new to him and it showed.  I don't see the same thing happening in Cleveland.

He actually was asked about this last night in the press conference. He had a ton of family and friends at the game, being that it was so close to his hometown. He said he played at The Convo probably eight times or so while in high school. He said Ohio recruited him but ultimately he was told by Groce they didn't have a scholarship to offer him. Obviously, the Bobcats had no seniors last year, so at the time of his signing, this would have been true. He didn't say it, but I kind of got the sense he would have preferred OU, but it wasn't really an option for either him or the team. And he did say he was happy how it worked out and that he ended up at Akron.

Years ago Gary Trent who was from Maryland lit them (Maryland) up. I believe we beat them that night. He was playing with a chip on his shoulder, as I am sure this kid was.

Probably. Williams put up 15 and 15 in that one. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=273460120

I told my fiance last night, that kid is going to be a thorn in our side for years.

I actually said the opposite to my buddy about Kretzer (thorn in our sides for years). He and MacAdams and Walsh make a living off of 3's and they are extremely good at their jobs but when Zeke is out next year they will not get as many kickouts and the next year when Tree and Abreu are gone they won't either. It's like Nick next year. He'd better hope Ndour is the real deal and Bean and Stevie can penetrate because he makes a living (or used to) off of drive and pitches by Coop and Walt.

I coached Jake during his last AAU season.  I hate to say this but, Jake and his father wanted him to come to OU sooooo bad! He was simply not recruited. Also, he has several family members and friends who are OU alum. His HS team played in the Convo several times. We really missed the boat on this kid!

add Kretzer to the list of players that have had career days against Ohio this year-

Robert Morris
Karvel Anderson 10-10, 8-8 from 3, career high 28 points.

Memphis
Geron Johnson 8-11, 3-5 from 3, career high 21 points.

UMass
Jesse Morgan 12-18, 7-10 from 3, career high 35 points.

Akron
(2/2) Alex Abreu 7-10, 3-5 from 3, career high 21 points.
(2/27) Tree Treadwell 7-13, career high 21 points
(2/27) Jake Kretzer 6-6, 5-5 from 3, career high 19 points

combined 26/33 from 3. what happened to our perimeter defense?

dj, nic and stevie and others that "play" perimeter defense: please note all the guys who had career three point nights vs us.  Let's try working a bit harder to get out on makers!

This really seems like a Catch 22.  If all 5 guys are encouraged to help on rebounding and if our bigs can't guard interior guys without help, then something has to give, especially against teams that have good in-out games.  Our perimeter guys don't have that luxury in that Reggie has been our only consistent interior scorer.  Add that to the fact that Walts been inconsistent driving this season, though he appears to be heating up a bit again and Ivo is no longer a drive or post up threat.  Akron is multi-dimensional, we're one dimensional.

I hope that the Kretz enjoyed last night.  It'll be his best college game ever.

When I played I was really mediocre.  But I contested everything on defense,  I don't get why guys don't do that.  Must CONTEST EVERYTHING on defense.  Don't need surpassing physical skills to play that kind of defense.  Anyone can do it.

Thanks for this thread. As an OHIO and Waverly alum, I wondered if OHIO had tried to recruit Jake Kretzer. He seemed to be a natural for OUr team. Too bad he didn't get an offer. I really enjoyed watching Wednesday's game, up until the final result in OT. Unfortunately when OHIO gets an 18 point lead on Akron, Akron has the Bobcats right where they want them. Seriously, I do hope we get a final rematch on the 16th and although I won't mind seeing Kretzer have another good night, the result must be different. Go Bobcats!

I thought he made a few key plays off the ball as well.  Definitely a good player, but it is what it is...We didn't have any openings until Goard & Jacobs left.  Funny how timing works out sometimes.

The crazy thing is that most of his shots were contested.  I thought 2 or 3 of them should have been 4 pt. plays.  He got knocked into the 110 drumline twice as the ball was going through the hoop.  He had a really nice game and was the difference in a win or a loss.

This kid was the difference maker. Had he missed 2 of his 5 3 pointers we win.

That's really impressive, Monroe!  Never once got screened off and gave up a shot to someone...remarkable.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but Kretzer is a freshman and Treadwell is a sophomore (true, listed as a junior, but he's in his second year, first as a starter ... and should have two more years left). So, it's not like either have had a ton of opportunities to put up "career days" on anybody.

At the same time, couldn't Akron fans say that Travis Wilkins had a career day the other night? I follow MAC basketball, but he was completely off my radar. He almost made up for Kretzer's outburst offensively (Kretzer, though had way more of a defensive impact).

Jeff--Sure I got screened.  But I fought not to let it happen and if it did I picked up whoever I could and headed to the boards.  I contested.  It's how the game should be played.

Maybe I'm wrong in questioning how good Kretzer is but at least a couple of his shots from the top of the key were not at all contested.

He's 6.7--is he any help inside (boards, defense)?

And I once scored 30 points in a pickup game when I was 17 years old. Why can't all our starters just do that?

there are several players on the list who don't have a lot of playing time but the difference for them compared to Wilkens is that they were the key to their team winning. If Ohio had beat Akron nobody would be pointing to Wilkens as the difference maker, but Kretzer and Tree were the keys to Akron's win.
