We had 10,846 in the roundhouse today for a less than exciting opponent, but it was a Saturday game...

What about Akron?  Wednesday, 2-27...

We had 7,648 on Wednesday, 1-16 for NIU.  10,000 on a Wednesday seems like wild optimism.  There is no reason it should be.  If we can get 7500 for NIU, we can get 10,000 for Akron with the MAC Championship on the line.  No promotions needed, if Akron and Ohio keep winning we should have 10,000 in the Convo on a Wednesday.

If both teams win out going into it and Akron is ranked, you may see a sellout.

If there is some sort of tailgate/giveaway, you might get to 10K. But that's probably pie-in-the-sky.

Face it: We need a gimmick to get students to show up in droves. We've seen some of the largest student crowds in history recently, but it's directly related to the promotions. The "average" OU student doesn't view Akron as a big deal.

They do, however, view DP Dough and free jerseys as a big deal.

Disagree 100%

The students have showed up like never before in both football and basketball this year, and it has everything to do with our winning football and basketball programs.

The culture has changed.

The average OU student is now an OU fan first.  It is an exciting reality.

I think there has been SOME culture change, but look at our top crowds this year while students are in session...

Portland (12,194)- Sweet 16 glasses, banner ceremony, Dad's Weekend
St. Bonaventure (6,389)- I know there was some sort of giveaway/tailgate, I can't remember
NIU (7,648)- Black jersey giveaway and free food
BGSU (10,846)- Sibs Weekend and t-shirts

I'm not saying this is a bad thing at all. Just that we need a little magic to get students to the games. I don't think the casual OU student will get up for any MAC game, no matter how good Akron might be this year. It's another story if we're playing a BC$ type of opponent.

Meanwhile, Akron was doing backflips and sending out congratulatory emails for drawing 5,700 when we were there last weekend. To be fair, it was a sellout, but seeing them make such a big deal about it really speaks to just how amazing it is that we are projecting almost double that for the rematch on a weeknight.

Well, it'd be interesting to see if Akron had an area like the Convo.

If they could fit 13k then who knows how much they'd draw. (Still less than OU, but still)

Akron has 2 games a year that they can sell out - Kent (rivalry/proximity) and OU. Beyond that, they're at 2,500-4,000 for most games. I don't think a 13,000 seat arena would do them many favors.

I've said it previously, move the Akron game to a Saturday with an ESPN2/ESPNU coverage between 12pm-7pm, hand out T-shirts to all fans to and make it a stripe like Green and White and our offer students Taco Bell. Near if not Sell-out seats.

Im not sure it was a sell out while I was sitting  in the upper corner there were 3 full rows of empty seats behind me.

For comparison: Yesterday, top 10 program and ACC leader Miami (Fl) plays tradition rich North Carolina and only draws 7,800. To be fair I'm not sure how big their arena is. Meanwhile rual Athens, Ohio packs in almost 11,000 for BG.

I didn't realize this.  This is awesome.

I think Ohio students WILL get excited for Akron.  Ohio students have seen our last two tourney runs... They all know who we beat to get to the big dance.  The buzz for this will be special, Wednesday or not...

What does this mean?  I also see that there is a pregame student tailgate.

Green Fever is a promotion they have done for a couple years. In the weeks leading up to the game they sell green fever shirts and a book of coupons/deals for a number of places in Athens.

The shirt design has been well received lately and a lot of students buy the package. It is pricier than other deals, I think it is $20.. That said, you get the value back if you use a couple of the coupons available.

That is pathetic.  This is proof the OZone is not requiring the official shirt for entry to the section.  Of all the pictures the marketing department has, this is the one they use?
