This is my favarite time of year.  I almost enjoy the Conference Tournaments as much as I do the NCAA Tournament, especially the smaller ones.  The drama yesterday alone was great.   After watching the Cats take down Fiami and cut the nets down, which was awesome to begin with, I saw two great games with everything on the line.

Belmont survived Murray State in OT with two late shots by Kerron Johnson, one at the end of regulation and one with 1.2 seconds left in OT to put them in the dance.  The OT shot was set up by the most improbable of circumstances.  Belmont had tied it with 40 some seconds to go and Murray State was milking the clock to set up a go ahead shot.  One of the best players in college basketball, Isaiah Canaan received the ball out near midcourt and undefended proceeded to dribble it off his foot, creating an over and back and giving the ball to Belmont for their last shot.

Then Valpo, down 4 with 14 seconds to go to pull out an improbable victory over Green Bay.  You probably heard me scream and throw my shoe at the TV just after Valpo's first three to cut it to 1 with 8 seconds to go.  At precisely 10:30pm EST  ESPNU switched away from the game and by the time I was able to get ESPN3 going the game was over.  Valpo, however, hit a three at the buzzer to pull out the victory in ESPN"s version of the Heidi bowl.

And we stil have a ton of moments like that to come this week.

I enjoy Championship Week, too. It's pure amateur sport at its best. I easily like it more than the NCAA tournament.

Valpo wasn't the only buzzer beater in the horizon. Wright state took down Detroit with a fadeaway from basically behind the backboard.

Who doesn't love these games? Teams are literally putting everything they have on the floor.

Single-bid conference tournaments rule.  This is as good as the first round of the dance, for sure.  The big conference tournaments can be fun, but only when there is a school playing their way onto a dance card?

I agree.  Normally the MVC tournament is my favorite outside the MAC but the final has lost a little luster for me because both teams are already in. I'm still tuning in though because it should be a great game between two really good teams.

How about the Liberty Flames winning the Big South? They were the #5 seed (out of 6) in their division (basically equivalent to a #10 seed overall) and won four games in the conference tourney to go dancing. They are 15-20 and three of those wins are against non-DI teams. Started the season 0-8 and 0-10 against DI schools, and now they are dancing. Sure, they'll be one of the play-in games, but it's still awesome for them.

I think it is great for the basketball program, but I wish it happened to any school other than Liberty. As a Virginia native and a Southern Baptist, I've butted heads with them in the past. A lot.

Lot of strange things happening already. Robert Morris goes down at home in the NEC semifinals. Loyola Marymount goes into the WCC Tournament with a 14-game losing streak and gets three wins. Valpo and Belmont both looked like they were finished. Can't take anything for granted.
