Thought I would throw this out there for seeding purposes. Teams are listed in order by RPI (udpride.com). More upsets mean less NIT at-larges, but better seeding if Akron or Ohio win the tournament.

NCAA Auto-Bids
  • 6 - Gonzaga (WCC)
  • 18 - Belmont (Ohio Valley)
  • 25 - Creighton (MVC)
  • 60 - Valparaiso (Horizon)
  • 61 - Davidson (Southern)
  • 71 - South Dakota St. (Summit)
  • 92 - Florida Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun)
  • 93 - Harvard (Ivy)

Updated the RPI.  Looks like the NIT 8 seeds and at least half the 7s are gone.  I'd also guess Liberty, James Madison, LIU and the SWAC champion will be spending round 1 in Dayton as of right now.

IIRC last year the 4 lowest auto-bid teams played in dayton and the 4 lowest at-large-bid teams played in dayton. Does anyone know if thats the formal format going forward, or is there a chance that the 8 lowest bids overall (i.e. the 8 lowest auto-bids) will be relegated to the dayton games?

When it was just the 4 lowest auto-bid teams, tickets were $8 and it was one night. Now, tickets are $50 and it's over two nights. It will definitely stay this way as it makes the NCAA more money ($100 per seat vs. $8) and gives TV more product. If anything, I see more teams being added to the Tourney and this same First Four format being implemented at a site in addition to Dayton.

I hadn't thought of it in that way.  You're probably correct.

I know when they first started the Play-in Game (predecessor to the First Four) with the two worst teams they did not get a full share. But the schools participating didn't care because they split that money evenly with the conference so the loss of revenue wasn't great to them. In return, they got treated like royalty (an NCAA Charter would pick them up Sunday night), got the Tuesday night spotlight and 1 of the teams/coaches got to put NCAA wins on their resumes.

I'm not sure how the money is split in the current First Four format.

I thought I read somewhere that all the at-large last 4 teams get a full-share, but if they win they do not get an additional share for the next round game.  So USF last year got 2 shares despite playing in 3 games.
