Does anyone in Gonzaga's league draw 302 for a first round league championship game?  Just curious.

Not quite that bad, but Pepperdine averaged just over 1,000 per home game with a low of 535. Eastern's average was 869.

The MAC and WCC are pretty similar in attendance numbers with the exception that the WCC now has BYU, which averaged nearly 17,000 a game. After that, Gonzaga's was 6,000 (capacity every game) and then it drops to St. Mary's at slightly less than 3,000. The rest are between 1,800 and 2,200.

The MAC had seven schools average more than 2,600.

Now that is the definition of big-time basketball!

Seriously, though...basketball attendance for most MAC schools (outside of maybe Akron and Toledo) is an absolute joke. It would be nice if the MAC would begin making a concerted effort to get these numbers trending in the right direction. Because recently - attendance has seemed to be going down significantly.

For all of you guys thinking the MAC could just improve top to bottom I don't see how its possible in this day and age. In the 80's and 90's before the days of internet recruiting there were more players out there that were diamonds in the rough future NBA players that would land in the MAC. There wasn't as many schools in D1 in the Midwest with Oakland, IUPUI, IPFW, the Dakota schools ect. competing along side the NIU's, Ball State's and Eastern Michigan's of the MAC. As the performance has gone down so has the attendance which in turn makes those lower tier MAC jobs less desirable. Then they turn to marginal players and cheating placing their programs further in the hole. The MAC has become top heavy in the last decade as has most mid major conferences (Horizon, WCC) which has been beneficial to the serious players in those conferences facing less competition within their leagues. I'd prefer to play basketball in a conference where winning the regular season means something in the way of an NCAA bid. That is the overall strength that you have in the MVC and A10. The MVC had a program on a different level than the MAC in Creighton but with them leaving it should effect recruiting negatively across the league. The A10 is losing key programs and also taking a step back from a 3-4 bid conference to more of a 2 bid conference but I feel confident they can maintain that as the top mid major conference in the East Coast. The A10 might be worth exploring for Ohio. That is the best alternative short of the ACC which will never happen unless our budget skyrockets.

Creighton is a loss but the league has a bunch of programs that have been very good for a while.  This isn't a Gonzaga situation. This year was Creighton's first outright MVC regular season title since 2001.  Now obviously they have been the dominant program but Wichita State, Northern Iowa, Missouri State, Drake, and Southern Illinois (until the Lowery debacle) are all programs that have really made a mark in recent years.  Bradley and Illinois State have also had their moments.  In short, they survived the loss of Louisville, Tulsa, Cincinnati and Memphis. They will survive Creighton leaving.

Right, nothing to be proud of, but the MAC actually compares favorably to the WCC outside of BYU and Gonzaga, so it supports the argument that Ohio could rise up even as a member of the MAC as it stands. But I agree, of course, I'd rather have the rest of the league move up with the Bobcats.

The annoying WBs that Borna describes aside, to me this comes down to leadership.

This department has taken huge steps forward towards building yearly powers.  Investment in facilities is coming, season ticket sales are growing super fast, increased marketing, Russ & Rob, donations I believe are growing, & Evan Shaw is awesome.  All good things.  Growing towards big time.

Ohio needs to lead and that starts with the President and the Athletic Director pushing on the MAC staff to improve.  Frankly the MAC should be doubling down on it's recent luck of Sweet 16, BCS, and ranked teams.  Yes it's hard work of the student athletes, but MAC football had a really good season turn great with the high crap factor in the B1G. Those accomplishments should be the new benchmark of success.

Look at the conferences that we deem successful (MVC, A10, ACC (for those crazy East Coast posters), etc), they all have a brand you recognize.  And I'm not talking about some marketing BS or a logo change.

They'll survive Creighton if they could add Ohio, Akron and Miami in a division to go in with Indiana St, Evansville and Southern Illinois. That would make 2 strong divisions in the MVC with Wichita State and Missouri State in recruiting. That would be a perfect fit for basketball and baseball but one  issue with the MVC I'm noticing is the women's sports. The MVC doesn't have Field Hockey while the A10 does. The travel costs are going to be overall lower in the A10 with all the schools a quick flight near metro areas. Taking Akron into the A10 with us makes more sense than linking up with the MVC.

How does a thread talking about how we had great attendance (something that actually happened in real life) yet again turn into fantasyland?

Hey!  We should ask Cincinnati, Memphis, and UConn in they want to join the MAC.  It'd be a great move for them!

Do you understand how ridiculous this sounds?

borna and Bleed Green, once again, are spot on.  If we're leading the conference in attendance, it's probably somewhat safe to assume we're making more money than anyone else.  We know donations are at all-time highs.  Keep investing in the programs (I'm in the spend more on basketball camp - but there is no need to neglect football) and dominate the MAC.  Do this over a sustained period of time, and things will work themselves out.

But I know, I know.  Nobody gets excited over NIU and Buffalo.  But they would TOTALLY get JACKED for home games against Drake and Evansville, right?

I'll go ahead and assume that our highest attended game next year will be Northern Iowa.

My best friend Ozcat gets it unlike many of you others.  Control what you can:  support the Bobcats strongly to much winning.  The rest will take care of itself.

Borna is true also--every fan whose school is not in a top level conference thinks that their team is on the verge of moving up.  Get realistic.  Things may change, but for now we can 'make a good living'--a really good one--by being splendid in the MAC.

Look at his comments on the last page.

That's what my "unbelievable" comment was aimed at.

Jeeeez, SBH, were you having that kind of day?  Week?  Constipated, can't wait to get it all out?

In fairness, you're the one calling someone out.  Borna included himself in his own WB rant: "We are a bunch of whimpering bitches."  My italics.  And his central point was that we haven't dominated for as long as we need to to be considered "big time."

Keep it classy, we're the Best Fans in the MAC.

Repeat after me: We are not going to the MVC anytime soon. Can we please get back to reality, now?

We're not moving to FCS football, and I'm not even so sure they'd want us for other sports. We're in the MAC for the forseeable future...as are the other 11 members. No one in the MAC is very attractive to another league.
