If you go for the Bash, anticipate not being able to move or have any personal space.

You wanna be a real Ohio fan? Shuffle between Barley House, Zocalo, and the Lizard. Get tee shirts and put up sharpie graffiti in the bathrooms, just like you would in Athens.

Best idea ive heard so far haha. I plan on hitting just about as many bars as I can and win so much at the casino that I leave owning the Cavaliers

FYI: If you stay close to the airport near the Red Line, Tower City closes at 11pm and you can't get in to take a train back down to your hotel.

Now that Caesar's owns the Ritz and does deals with Renaissance, Tower City never closes because the Casino never closes. The stores (which are almost universally worthless), of course, close early, but the center stays open for people riding the train and wandering between the hotels and the casino.

The last train out of Tower City both Friday and Saturday is 12:42 a.m.

DING DING DING we have a winner!

A note for the non-Clevelanders is the Casino is REALLY close to the Q. While parking at the Casino parking lot is not free, you just have to have a Total Rewards card (their rewards program which is easy to sign up for) and gamble a set amount of time. They advertise it is 30+ minutes of gambling or if you play poker... 1 Hour of playing cards in the poker room. Then you can get your parking validated and park for free.

So you can either visit the casino before the game to get your parking validated or after the game to celebrate.

30+ minutes of gambling will likely cost more than the price of parking Downtown. But I guess you could get a couple free drinks out if it as well if you went this route.

Yeah, no free alchol (damn state laws) but at least the prices aren't insane. Same price as most bars nearby.

And yeah... if you gamble and lose then 'free' parking is expensive. But it is an option.

From the other thread: I'd highly recommend the Zocalo pre-game bashes if those are on again this year, lots of great (and free!) food there. Also highly recommend Dave's Cosmic Subs on 6th. Stumbled upon it last time I went to the tournament, loved the food and the vibe. The place would be totally at home on Court Street (and the guy who was in there when we went was an alum - not sure if he was the proprietor or not, though).

Also, regarding tickets, keep in mind that your Friday ticket is a session ticket, so you get to watch the Akron game that night, as well.

Problem with the Bashes are that when Ohio is playing the second game of the DH, the Bash takes place during the first game.  I'm there to watch basketball so I just skip those Bashes.

A problem last year was the overcrowding at Zocalo's.

If you aren't planning on getting drunk, have a DD, and/or are cool with RTA, the best hotel prices by far are consistently in Independence, 8 miles to the south right off of I-77. Just drive up from there and pay your $10 to park, and get there early enough for food and maybe a few drinks before the game.

If you're really not picky, you can "Name Your Own Price" (Priceline) ones down there usually pretty damn cheap.

I know back in 2010 anorris posted a Hotwire deal that ended up being the Crowne Plaza downtown for like $57/night, and me and a few others jumped on it.  It was like a 10 minute walk.

Unfortunately this season, the Crowne Plaza was bought out and is being renovated, but there are a few others you could try on Hotwire or Priceline. None as good a deal as that was, though.

While it was a great deal and I was perfectly happy with it, it was due for a renovation.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn express Downtown. several years. Walk to the Lizard is right down the alley. Prices were really good through priceline. Parking is across the street and was fairly reasonable considering.....

The PNC garage (E. 9th and Vincent) is about 2 blocks from the arena, and it's $5. I park there for every game at the Q or Progressive Field.

The Clevelander is not permanently closed. It is being remodeled.

The casino is a lot of fun, but bring your big-boy wallet if you want to play table games, especially blackjack.

If you're looking for a good postgame spot, I'm a big fan of Flannery's on E. 4th. If you're there on Saturday, look for the black Ohio jersey with #21 and no name on the back, and I'll buy you a drink (to celebrate a victory, hopefully)!

I was recently down in the Casino on a Saturday after a Cavs game let out. The place was packed and rocking. Awesome atmosphere.  It probably helped that Kyrie put on a show that night and led the Cavs to an upset over win over OKC.

Anyway, I am really excited about the MAC Tourney in Cleveland this year.  Whether you are a gambler or not, the Casino helps keep a crowd downtown at all hours.  The potential for an Akron-Kent semi followed by an Ohio semi really could make for a special Friday.

Then we win the Saturday...

Town painted green to celebrate the Ohio win and for Cleveland's big St. Patricks day celebration Sunday.

edit:
Probably should have mentioned that St Patricks day was this upcoming Sunday sooner.  Solid chance the hotels fill up a bit for people wanting to party friday then walk to the parade and drink more Sunday morning...

Stuff to do: If you’re looking for something fun on FRIDAY or Saturday, try hitting West 25th Street. The West Side Market is a fabulous palace of food, and the neighborhood contains three breweries (Great Lakes, Market Garden, Nano) to go along with an additional beer hall (Bier Markt) and a bunch of good bars and eateries.

If on Friday you get to town in time for dinner and saving the bar scene for Saturday then consider dinner at SoHo's on W. 25th.  One of Cleveland's top newer restaurants. Every Friday thru Easter
Fish Fry - Carolina catfish, fries, slaw & pickled okra tartar.

 www.sohocleveland.com/

For Saturday or Sunday breakfast, head to the Tremont area and try Lucky's.  Close to the Russian orthodox church made popular in the movie  "Deer Hunter".  Just a bit south from there is the Christmas Story House where you can see Ralphie's pad and see the "lamp" in the window

If your sweet tooth is causing you a problem, head to Sweet Moses at W.65th and Detroit in the now gentrified area known as the Gordon Squre Arts District.  It is an old fashioned soda shop that has Lent busting delights galore.  Take a quick walk around the neighborhood and grab coffee and check the scores at an internet cafe on the corner.

The parking garage connected to my building is free if you leave after 7pm (when the attendant leaves).

No time limit, but a little construction going on. Directions here.

Someone suggested Melt for foodies coming to town...Melt is good, but we are talking dinner (any night) or brunch (Sunday after the big win) there are much better options.

  1. Greenhouse Tavern [Downtown] (Dinner) ($$$)
  2. Black Dog [Downtown] (Dinner) ($)
  3. Happy Dog [Westside] (Lunch/Dinner) ($)
  4. The South Side [Tremont] (Brunch) ($$)
  5. Hodge's [Downtown] (Dinner) ($$$)
  6. Press [Tremont] (Brunch) ($$)

The MAC Tournament is a big perk of living in Cleveland, I'm excited.

If we win Friday night, is anyone planning on driving up from the Athens area on Saturday for the title game only?

Ha HA

the man has not said 2 words to me since he has been in Athens. Walks right by. That s OK.... I have no opinion on how to run a program and would not be so bold to say anything if asked.......

Before I saw this I was going to ask what is the name of the place where I got the great Rueben sandwiches. North and East of the Holiday in Express maybe 6 blocks north and 6 blocks east. Great lil lunch and breakfast restaurant. SOme of the best sammies I have ever seen.

If it wasn't more than six blocks, I'd suspect you were thinking of Slyman's... a local legend with tremendous corned beef on the outskirts of our small and somewhat sketchy Asiatown. It's not the best neighborhood and it's not an easy walk, but there are some spectacular restaurants in the 3000 block area of Payne, St. Clair and Superior avenues. Slyman's is one of the few that is not Asian.

http://www.slymans.com/

Street numbers on east/west streets in Cleveland are based on how many blocks they are from Public Square. That would put Slyman's about 25 blocks from HI Express, which around E. 6th.
