Don't doubt that our defensive efficiency was that good numerically...but are you kidding me? Our schedule strength was 184 according to Sagrin. I figure if we get that number down to about 250 we could be #1 in defensive efficiency rating. Would anybody really care about the number then? I think, more than anything, our number says we played pretty good defense against a bunch of crappy MAC teams. Wonder what the ratings were for Belmont, Memphi or OK?
On the other hand, the Ilini had a schedule strength of #4. Do you really think you could compare their defensive number to ours and have an apples to apples comparison?
Sometimes, it takes the "expertly trained eye" to know if a team is playing good defense (haha).

To summarize (and someone please correct me if I'm misinterpreting these statistics):
Scoring Defense:
Illinois's opposition had an average (mean) score 8.35 points/game more than ours (1.8 points/game more using the medians)
Against that higher scoring opposition, Illinois allowed 0.4 points per game more than us (mean), so in points per game terms and given their opponents, I'd say Illinois's defense was better than ours.
Defensive Efficiency (I THINK this is points/possession):
Illinois's opposition had an average (mean) offensive efficiency that was 0.040 more than our opposition (0.024 more using the medians), while our defensive efficiency was 0.045 better than theirs, making our defensive efficiency marginally better than theirs, given the opposition.
Thoughts? Am I using these numbers correctly?
Thanks
