How will this affect our ranking in U.S. News? One thing that I always believed hurt us was our relatively high acceptance rate, over 80%. If they only accept around 4,000, that would put our acceptance rate around 20%--far below any of the other public schools in Ohio, including that school in Columbus.

There is also someone with a perfect score and perfect gpa who was wait-listed.

There must be a character issue. Family relations to Miami or Akron?

It is not uncommon for someone to be wait-listed or denied when the school is clearly not among the applicant's top choices, even with ridiculous academics/test scores. I knew a guy that scored a perfect on the MCAT and really wanted to go to osu for med school. When he was wait-listed, he had to call the powers that be and beg to be admitted because they just assumed that osu was his safety school and he really wanted to go to Hopkins, Stanford, etc.

Or at least that's the story he told. I always thought he was a self-absorbed asshat who probably annoyed his interviewers as much as he annoyed everyone else who ever met him.

My girlfriend works in student affairs and used to work in admissions. This is not the case at the schools she has worked for (a private science and technology focused college and a mid-sized public school). If a candidate is qualified, they are admitted. They then go out of their way to get those top choices to commit. They'll make extra phone calls and send extra info to those students.

Also, I have a friend who works in admissions at Princeton and that doesn't happen there either, although I'm sure no one is applying to Princeton as a safety school.

They can't JUST admit 4,000 students if they want an incoming class of 4,000...

You need to admit many more than that to get 4,000 to accept and commit.
Probably have to admit 50% of the 20,000 applicants to get 4000 to enroll...

It is VERY common for schools to wait-list the students with outstanding scores/GPA if they think they will not attend, b/c that increases their acceptance rate by not having those students deny them and go elsewhere.

Someone with a perfect score and GPA is not going to commit to Ohio, if one of the top schools takes them and offers them a huge scholarship to attend.

The last rate I could fine was 86.1%.  Miami is at 74% and BG at 76%.

Good point. So say we admit 50%, the overall point still stands. This is far below our past acceptance rate and below other public schools in Ohio, including osu, which is 63%.

I stand corrected. Good to know.

Love this kind of statement.

So we should expect 10-16K influx of freshman students next year? Unless your contention is that 75% of those applying are not qualified.

Quality info in this thread. I finally understand why I was wait-listed at Harvard, also known as my backup school.

I believe my rejection letter from Northwestern went something like:

Mr. Smith:

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

Did you think there would be a clerical error or something? LOL.

You're funny. In a dog trying to open a box of Milkbones sort of way.

Also, Evan Eschmeyer has never met you and is wondering why you forged his signature on that letter of recommendation. He's angry and he's very tall.

Sincerely,

Northwestern
