VIEW AT OWN RISK

Yeah .....I 'll take a pass. I do not mind seeing it laying on a table or laying a knife on it to repair, but for some reason I can not watch it happen. Gives me the willies.

That's an interesting admission, Doc.  As you know, I worked with physicians for much of my career and I don't know many who would have admitted that --- even if true.  I think they would fear it would somehow destroy the image that they've tried so carefully to manage since they entered medical school.  In my eyes, though, respect for you grows when I hear this kind of plain speaking of your true inner feelings.  JSF will probably call me a sexist, but in my experience female physicians would be more likely to admit this kind of difference between their professional roles and responsibilities in the clinic or hospital and their personal reaction to seeing the accident that produced the injury they have to deal with in the ER of OR.

I respect what you're saying. My understanding is that the NCAA doesn't let the schools cover this stuff, which gets my gast flabbered. I have little doubt Louisville would pony up if they could.
Your understanding is flat out wrong. Many programs have secondary insurance coverage.

Sorry, when I said "cover," I meant "pay the bills." Unless that's what you meant and Ohio isn't one of the programs with secondary coverage.

So is Ohio not one of those schools? Or does that insurance coverage not get passed on to players? Health insurance is, as we all know, confusing.

Every school is different. Ohio probably does not have secondary insurance. Every school is different in the level of coverage.

Is it possible that Ohio is self insured in this area?  I know that the university does self insure in several other areas where the cost of premiums is statistically likely to exceed the cost of paying the claims out of pocket in the average year.  In these case the university only pays for catastrophic coverage. By doing this they have saved a lot of money over the years.

I have to think this is one of those recruiting advantages the big schools use and we don't even know about. "If you go to a mid-major, you're responsible for your own medical bills. If you come to Big State U, you're covered."

Thanks for the link. This is what bothers me: "But Ware is likely to be personally responsible for any health care expenses related to the injury after he leaves Louisville. Injuries sustained in college athletics that linger or develop into chronic conditions are generally not covered by a university’s or the N.C.A.A.’s medical insurance once an athlete has left college."

Also from the link:
Concerns about inequitable treatment of college athletes last year caused the California Legislature to pass a bill known as the Student-Athlete Bill of Rights. It requires universities that generate more than $10 million in annual media revenues from athletics — four California universities qualified immediately — to provide equivalent academic scholarships to varsity athletes who are injured and lose their athletic scholarships. It also mandates that the institutions pay the health care premiums for low-income athletes and cover all deductibles for injuries related to participation in an intercollegiate sport.

This sounds like a good start to dealing with the problem.

I agree that it raises some troubling ethical questions, particularly given the largess flowing in to the NCAA. I know most programs don't make big bucks, but all athletes are part of a system that produces massive amounts of cash. It's troubling to think that anyone could be on the hook for injuries suffered while playing for their school.
