I think it might be still a bit too early to have it confirmed by Boals and leaks to start getting out - maybe another week or so before potential leaks?

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who saw those scrubs from Duke arriving by bus at the Athens Fairfield Inn a few nights ago - must be pretty serious.

Keep an eye on the internet basketball junkies ... at some point one or more of these guys print a secret scrimmage schedule ... and then 'leak' some reports afterward.

But this might be a lean year as several teams are doing NCAA sanctioned 'exhibitions' with proceeds going to Hawaii to rebuild the island.

Also, check last year. These scrimmages are often 'home and home' deals from year to year.

Ohio lost their "secret scrimmage" to Duquesne 72-59 according to reports on Twitter. I have no details beyond the final score.

The logical side of my brain says it's a secret scrimmage which means nothing. Getting guys looks, trying rotations, working on specific things etc. Nothing more than a glorified practice and thus completely meaningless.

The emotional side of my brain says, crap, losing by 13 to an A10 bottom feeder doesn't sound like an encouraging start.

Akron got blown out in a scrimmage with YSU. Means nothing.

Duquesne won 20 games last season and is picked to finish 4th in the A10. Far from a bottom feeder.

I mean, we nearly lost to YSU last season - is that the measuring stick we're using?

YSU was better than us last year. By a good margin.

Here's how these 'secret scrimmages' often/usually operate, w officials:

20-min 1v1s (top 7 players) playing man defense only
20-min 1v1s (top 7 players) playing zone defense only (top 7 can change)
20-min 2v2s man or zone (everyone else)
20-min special O, special D (situational)

The scores from all these sessions are usually combined for the final tally. What is not universally known is which team won each segment and by how much. A pretty even scrimmage overall can look off-kilter with one dominant/negative 20-minute session.

Just sayin ...

Not all scrimmages are like this, but I'd guess most of them are pretty close to this format.

If anyone goes to the Ohio basketball Block Party tonight can someone ask Boals for a box score from the secret scrimmage? Since we have have zero media...I mean zero media covering the team...maybe he'll give up some info....haha.

Three weeks into practice and it's been crickets coming out of the Convo. I think the Post has had one very generic article about the team during this time.

If I'm Arkley or Russ, I would have considered doing a subscription based service for Ohio basketball and football content year round on a regular basis. You charge $4.99 a month and I bet at least 500 diehard fans here would pay for it. That's $2,500 bucks a month in side hustle income which comes out to $30K a year with just 500 subscribers. I know I would subscribe if I were getting solid weekly content on the Ohio men's basketball team year round. And yes...you can do it year round with recruiting and feature stories 12 months a year. I've seen writers/announcers create subscription based content services for college basketball programs smaller than Ohio.

I guarantee you'd have no more than 75 subscribers. Sad but true. When it comes to forking over even $4.99 a month, MAC fans are the cheapest on the planet.

I get it....you are still going to have people who don't want pay for Ohio hoops/football content. Then start it out cheaper for a year....say $3.99 and see how it goes. Remember...if somebody actually started this...they have to travel to all games on their own dime....transportation-hotels-food. They can't do it for free. I would gladly pay $4.99 per month for somebody who was going to dedicate themselves to do this and go to every game and weekly practices and generate real content on a regular basis.

While I'd love Arkley back and full MAC coverage, I'd settle for a small fee paid subscription service to pay for a resident aspiring broadcast journalism major at OU to just provide consistent and inside Bobcats content.

Student beat reporter.

Yes...I didn't mean Arkley as the only one who could do it. I'll take anyone at this point.

Who did we scrimmage last season? Wasn't it Cincinnati? Dayton? And OU beat their ass... and allegedly... the coach was mad because Boals was literally pressing the whole time? Calling timeouts down to the very last second to get plays run?

I could've made that up. I think I recall this being real though.

Anyway, losing is never good, but a scrimmage is just a practice. It's gonna take some time to figure out this small ball line-up.

I mean, we say this damn near weekly on this forum.

And we all circle back to the same thing... how does one of the best journalism schools in the country not have a dedicated group of student reporters for athletics? This should be a COVETED role. Internship credit. Access to athletes and games. Real world work experience. Leave school with a huge portfolio of writing samples and a full reel to use?

I'm baffled. Every year I'm baffled. This has to be an institutional failure, I refuse to believe there isn't an appetite among students. Especially the hungry ones who are hustling to get writing credits and their face out there.

Oh, they are there. They're just covering other teams in the area.

I'll let you theorize why.

I'll admit I'm not in the know on this one. My theory would be either the OU athletic department doesn't want them (idiotic if true), or the journalism profs and students feel their time is better spent/better visibility/better resume and portfolio building by covering college or pro teams from Columbus and Cleveland.

If the former is true, somebody needs to shake the AD.
If the latter is true, that's extremely sad and one would think OU could convince SOMEONE/two/three of them to cover their own school instead.
Or it could be neither - in which case I'm all ears.
