I'm a current student and I as well could have went to many other schools (29 ACT composite in high school), and I can say my freshman year taught me a lot. It sounds like the guy above's son is smart enough to go to graduate school though, so why not consider going to OU for an undergrad, then a Northwestern or other university for a graduate? Or maybe even OU for the graduate degree. Hell, my mother has an associate's, bachelor's, and master's from Ohio

Have went does not equal a 29 ACT.

I went to Ohio.  Wife went to Lehigh.  Ex-girlfriend went to Colgate.  Patriot League has us academically.  But it is not night and day.

I don't think anyone claimed Ohio's academics are on the same level as Colgate.  That doesn't make Ethan's quote about not being able to talk to people from Ohio any less stupid.

I kind of get it.....if you look around the locker room and see who he is talking to you can somewhat understand.

I remember several incedents where Tommy was hostile about his fellow players being idiots toward a different approach and work ethic regarding school. A certain fadeaway jump shooter loudly announcing while waiting to board a plane "look at Tommy getting Brownie points from the coaches by bringing his books on the road and studying in front of them".......Upper level stats courses and accounting ..he better be studying on the road. I think his reply was rather pointed and addressed the issue of the difference in upper level business courses and Cluster as opposed to the freshman courses the guy who was ridiculing him was taking at the time. Still pissed him off enough to call home and vent hours later.

If Ethan is looking around the Colgate locker room and then keeping in touch with his boys back in Athens then I can kind of get why he has a kind of skewed view of the academics he is discussing with the guys he hung with, may not be very palatable to those of us here but put in perspective I am sure Rico, TJ,  et al would have much of a handle on the difference .....An unfortunate statement that can be taken out of context and examined from many perspectives. As an aside how is our psych department?...and how much different would we find in the expectations of a COlgate undergrad on campus than that of a typical OU frosh /soph that he would have experienced?

Great reply. (In my head, I'm imagining how a certain former Akron player's parent would have responded.)

He never said in Scripps.  A Scripps grad would not have inserted it in the post as you did.  As for taking it to twitter, that's not a war you want to fight.  Go back and read Borna's post.  He pretty much sums it up.

My friends and colleagues graduated from many top universities including Penn, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Harvard, Yale, Berkley, Brandeis, Rutgers, Boston U.... the list goes on. I can assure you that I have never had a problem keeping up in academic discussions with any of them.

I have friends that have Ohio University undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees from Columbia, Penn, UVA, Georgetown, etc.

I got a 30 composite on my ACT and accepted a full ride to Ohio. It's the best decision I ever made.

My point is that it was a lazy comment on his part and just shows that he did not take the opportunity to socialize with a wider cross section of the Ohio student body, which I would pit against the Colgate student body any day if we were competing for indicators of academic ability, sociability, or political activeness.

With that being said, I get borna's point about the difference between locker rooms.

Proud 2000 OHIO grad, now an attending internal medicine doctor at the University of Pittsburgh. Never had the money for the private places, what with med school looming. Also, got a full academic ride to OHIO. I'm doing just fine now.

They've got the same text books at all these places boys and girls.

You can get a great education at Ohio University.  If you don't then that's your fault.   And if you can't talk to the people around you intelligently then you need to get around other people.  There are plenty of people in Athens that can talk intelligently about just about anything.   I'm also not going to slam Ethan for his comments.  But it sounds like something you'd hear from someone speaking to a particular audience.  I hope he does well there.

No one (perhaps other than Ethan, but I wouldn't even jump to that conclusion) is saying that you can't get a good education at Ohio University. So thank you all for citing the test scores of you and your friends, but that doesn't change the fact that Ohio University is not the #1 academic institution outside of the ivy league.

That said, as far as where OU stands among peer institutions, I would say our university does a pretty great job at connecting the upper tier of students with opportunities not elsewhere available.

I sure wish a 30 would result in a full ride today!  My daughter got a 30 on her ACT some months ago, graduated 2nd in her class and was only offered a $2,000 scholarship by Ohio.

http://www.ohio.edu/admissions/gateway/

32/1400 has been the cut-off since at least 2007, when I matriculated.

Obviously there are other scholarships other than Gateway, though.

edit: That's a pretty decent premium on those last couple points..

I benefited from being from Adams County. I was a member of the first class of Appalachian Scholars. They gave out ten scholarships (six to main campus) to students from Appalachian Ohio based on a combination of financial need, ACT scores, grades, extracurriculars, an essay, and an on-campus interview.

Pretty sure 32/1400 was the cut-off at least as far back as 2001, when I enrolled

Getting a 30 and graduating second in her class....I'm sure she'll be in a position to foot the bill for whatever interest rate you decide to charge her.

Just make sure she picks the right major and that your MAC clause (haha..good pun....right guys?) is air tight!
