Just now, as the halftime show went to commercial, they showed the OSU cheerleaders and I swear I heard at least one of 'em say "Go Ohio!".  Wow.

It took me a while to realize this, but after a made free throw the OSU cheerleaders lead a quick cheer of "O-H (clap, clap) I-O!"  I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

They make fools out of themselves when they do the O-H-I-O after free throws.

I saw it too, several of them were saying it and they all had that confused look on their faces like somebody broke wind and they don't know if they're the guilty party.

Ohio State desperately wanted to be "The University of Ohio"  and it drives them crazy they are not. A&M even proposed it at one time and its my understanding that President Baker fought it and won.  I think the name change actually made it to the floor of the Ohio State house but was defeated because of Dr. Baker' s efforts. That is why they have successfully stolen the "Ohio" brand and for years Ohio University said nothing.  If it were up to me the Convo' s name would be changed to "Ohio Arena" and Peden Stadium to "Ohio Field".  I would do everything in my power to protect and grow that brand.  If for no other reason that to shove it down A&M throat!

I just watched it again thanks to my DVR and you nailed it.  A perfect description of the way the cognitive dissonance affected their faces.

I'm pretty sure that's true.  I could verify it if I would get off my lazy ass and find my copy of "Ohio University, 1804 - 2004: The Spirit of a Singular Place"

I think all the state fans just realized how bad it sucks being completely delusional all their lives and at that moment decided to fight that feeling and cheer for us.

From a previous Post piece on the topic:

"In 1917, the school attempted to change its name to the “University of Ohio,” though no other state in the union had ever given two of its schools such similar and confusing monikers. Its request was denied by the state legislature, but that hasn’t stopped them from continually running away from that persistent “State” tag."

I was also baffled by the "Don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan" song towards the end.  A brief google search shows they have done it after beating UM, and michigan state which I suppose makes sense.

Are they trying to make it like the "Winning team, losing team" thing they can do every time they win?  If so you would think they have to modify it based on whatever state the other team is from if not Michigan.  That thought makes it even more laughable that they would do it against a team that also happens to be "from O- HI - Ooooooo".

I believe the year of the OSU attempt to become the "University of Ohio" was 1914.  I remember finding information about this when I was working on my master's at The Big Farm.  I was in the library one weekend, and for some reason was looking at some old school history stuff.  At that time, as was said previously, the legislature said no, but as a "compromise" added the "The" to their name.  An article we've always had in front of ours but only use on diplomas and other formal documents. Now, if there was another attempt in the Baker years, I don't know about that one.  As far as I know the attempt in circa 1914 was the only one.

I could be wrong on the timing. Bottom line is even though they were never able to get the name change they did everything in there power to brand themselves as "Ohio" and succeeded. I will say that over the past 20 years Ohio University had taken some great strides in reclaiming it name.
