Ohio State desperately wanted to be "The University of Ohio" and it drives them crazy they are not. A&M even proposed it at one time and its my understanding that President Baker fought it and won. I think the name change actually made it to the floor of the Ohio State house but was defeated because of Dr. Baker' s efforts.
I'm pretty sure that's true. I could verify it if I would get off my lazy ass and find my copy of "Ohio University, 1804 - 2004: The Spirit of a Singular Place"
From a previous Post piece on the topic:
"In 1917, the school attempted to change its name to the “University of Ohio,” though no other state in the union had ever given two of its schools such similar and confusing monikers. Its request was denied by the state legislature, but that hasn’t stopped them from continually running away from that persistent “State” tag."
