I lost my voice during that Akron game last year, such a great atmosphere. I think the problem is that there isn't that great of communication between the sections. one side will start a chant and the other side will start one and no one knows what to yell out. The black seats also hurts us because we can't be right on the court.

This I agree with.

Since my freshman year (04-05), in my opinion the best years for the O-Zone were 05-06, 06-07, and 10-11.

One thing I found to be most helpful were the flyers strewn about the bleachers during pre-game.  Lots of pre-meditated chants about opposing players checkered histories as well as the cadence for the generic ones.  Bravo to the guys in charge those years, I have never felt the same energy from the O-Zone since I have been an alumni.

I believe they still do this.

Yup. We also struck a deal with IMG sports to have a gameday "OZone" publication to use instead of the Post. Generic anti-other MAC school headlines and such.

I've ripped on the O Zone enough over the years since I left it behind for Section 1, but I will say this:

The band is the new O Zone.

They are together, they are loud, they are passionate, they are inventive - then they play some pretty rocking tunes.

I think a major turning point was when they made the section free in 05-06 (my senior year). After that point the exclusivity has disappeared. It's now an anyone can be down there type of thing. When it was paid, you had assigned seats, you got to know the people around you, and if there was some late coming jerk off ruining it for everyone by standing on the floor and continuously cursing you could get them thrown out. The place was packed, and I mean sold out. Every seat from the floor to PRESS ROW was full my freshman year.

You had a vested interest. I had so much of a vested interest I started the "chant sheet" back up and named it. I used MY OWN COLLEGE STUDENT MONEY to buy the paper it was printed on, and when the kind nameless university office I worked at and allowed me to make copies if (I provided the paper) was closed, Kinkos it was.

I'll leave the then and now comparisons to Athena and OU Country and McBin as they know from both O Zone and Post-O Zone time.

This I agree with.
The students didn't move one inch when the Black seats were put in. The cheerleaders moved, not the OZone. Frankly, the cheerleaders do more following than leading anyway. The center of the OZone and the 110 do a lot more organized cheering. And, it's not like the students don't get the best seats in the arena already. At most of the other MAC schools, the students get shoved to the baselines.

The OZone isn't that bad right now. There has always been a part of that section that doesn't do much more than sit there. This includes the years I was in school (91-95) when we had the most exciting player to ever put on the Bobcat uniform. I'm just thrilled we have somewhat of a tradition of a strong student section, some solid cheers everyone knows and attendance numbers that most of college basketball is envious of.

The O Zone has always been paid, but it has not always been policed. It sort of depends on the year and what the student officers in charge want and is not a new development. I am in favor of policing the entrance to the bottom eight rows, allowing only people wearing an O Zone shirt entry. At about five-ten minutes before tipoff, you open the section to the rest of the student crowd. That way, you ensure that paying members get the best seats. Otherwise, what the heck do your membership dues get you? A tee shirt? One bus trip? Whoopty-doo.

Totally agree. I know it was policed my freshman year (07-08) at least, and maybe the year after. I think the policy above makes good sense. Bleachers reserved for paying members, let the rest fill in as demand dictates.

I think we can all agree the O Zone is filled with nerds who can't get a girl to talk to them.
