With the rules changes in college hoops I think blocks are going to play an increased role in the game. You can't draw a charge anymore... Don't set yourself. Go for the blocks.

We have the guys to do that.

You watched any non-Ohio games this year? They're all like that. Turn on Belmont v. UNC

I would have to believe you are correct. I about lost my mind when they called the blocking foul against Kellogg when he was set up near the free throw line by the time the Valpo player crossed mid-court.

A fairly good effort today minus the final 5 minutes or so. I'm happy with the win!

Foul trouble will be a problem for us all year.  TJ Hall has always committed fouls at a very quick pace.  Jon Smith as well, to a lesser extent.  And Setty tries so hard to be aggressive and draw offensive fouls that I think he'll find himself in a lot of foul trouble too with any amount of minutes.  The new fouls make it worse, but I think we were heading this way regardless just with the nature of these guys' defensive style.  As has been the case thus far, I think this problem will create a decent amount of playing time for Antonio Campbell.

Look, if you're going to be insightful and reasonable, you have no place at the referee bashing table.

Been to all four games so far and have no problem with how the games have been called.  The players who have been called for fouls on both teams have generally been out of position or a bit slow to the spot.  Unless you're sitting in the black seats and the call is right in front of you, the refs have a far superior view of the action than any of us.

The bad calls today were much more than "blocks"/"checks" - they hit for the cycle - multiple times.

And as I have said multiple times on multiple threads - we need to get OUr share of these - more driving/slashing.

I think the officiating has been "fair" but that doesn't mean I have to like it. The new rules are slowing down the game and killing the flow. No one wants to see that many free throws.

Supposedly it will make the game better in the long run, but I'm not sure if I'm buying it....we'll see.

With the rules changes, taking a charge will be quite hard, may need to rethink some traditional defensive stratagies.

I like the new rules.  They put an emphasis on skills rather than bulk.  Some basketball games were beginning to resemble football without the pads.  On a somewhat related note, back in the day, East Coast officials were known for calling even the slightest hand-check as a foul, whereas, officials in the Old Northwest Territory (aka our region) were known for a more let-'em-play style.  Today, it seems to me, there is more of a national consensus as to how rules are interpreted.  I think that's good, also.

I hope what we are seeing is the refs having a feeling out period just like the players and that they will adjust.  I think part of the reason we are seeing Smith and Ndour with so many blocks is it's really the only way to stop a driving defender. Since they are calling any kind of body contact a shooting foul and it's impossible to draw a charge the only hope you have is to try for the block.

I guess it is official now?

Also was thinking about it... Our 4* recruit for next year is known best for his ability to block shots...

Are the MAC stats for blocks wrong because if they aren't EMU is Swat City

1. Eastern Michigan 4 45 11.3
2. Ohio 3 17 5.7

Mother of God. Looked at box scores, they had 13 a piece against Robert Morris and Cleveland State.

Would not surprise me if those numbers are correct. I saw it noted that Smith and NDour are #2 and #3 in blocks... I am assuming Dashonte Riley EMU's center is #1. He is a very large individual.

If he could develop any kind of offense and mobility he would be in the league for sure. He is one of the most physically imposing players I have ever seen.

That is correct. I had old info from before the EMU/CSU game.

Does EMU inflate these stats the same way they do their football attendance figures?

Or the...

"We don't do rebounds" City

Currently 309th in rebounds per game. If I remember right, this is about where we were last year too.

Imagine if we actually did do rebounds, how good we could be.

Can somebody fill me in on how the rule changes affect charging calls?  I know the new handcheck/arm bar rules and understand their purpose, but what new rules affect a ball handler running into a defender set in the post, outside the semi-circle, with hands straight up?  Isn't this still an offensive foul?  I could have sworn Setty was set perfectly to take one of these ala Tommy Freeman against Valpo but was called for the block.  I didn't have the best angle so maybe his heel touched the semi-circle?  Or what else am I missing?

Please explain.  Thanks.

The big change is that your feet must be set before the upwards shooting motion of the offensive player.  This was added because players who were athletic and quick enough could get their feet set after the player had leapt off the ground, and it would be called a charge even though the offensive player had absolutely zero control over that charge.

I saw the foul on the stream and I simply thought it was just a poorly judged call.  We have to keep in mind that the refs are still adjusting to these rules just like the players.  There will be some bad calls (as always), but they should be less common once conference play rolls around.

Thanks.  In the play I mentioned Setty was set well before the Valpo shooter left his feet.  I always thought you had to be set before a shooter went up anyway, I'm thinking this is less a "new" rule and more a decision to enforce a rule correctly and consistently.

You want to cite defensive rebounding percentage, not rebounds per game.
