Akron lost again today, this time @Middle TN 80-73. Overall the team shot 27-57(47.4%) but their 3 guards were a combined 2-14, 1-12 3pt, for 7pts and 0 assists.

Through 3 games their guards are a combined 5-31(16.1%), 2-17 3pt, 6/10 Asst/TO, 18pts.

Still early in the season but early prognosis looks like the guard position could be a big issue for the Zips.

As I remember, Abreu got off to a slow start his first year...made a lot of mistakes, took a lot of bad shots, threw the ball all over the arena...and he turned out to be a pretty fair PG.  So I wouldn't laugh too hard at these guys.  They know how to coach em up at Akron, like it or not.

Betancourt isn't nearly the prospect Abreu was.

They brought in Betancourt thinking he was going to be something of an Abreu type but that obviously has not panned out so far. So what do they do? Bring in Nyles Evans (Juco). I think that Nyles will get better over time but we all know that Akron's strength is the SF/PF Position with Diggs/Treadwell and also the 3 point shooting of McAdams and Kretzer off the bench.

Losing a fine point guard and a strong defensive presence BIGMANZ center--not too many MAC teams can keep rolling given that.

I think Dambrot adapts with a bit more tenacious D, uptempo game and use of a Point Forward type of game. Gonna speed the game up

This gets said all the time, but I don't know if it's true or not.

It's not true - just partly true - more so than the big 6 though.

JSF, it is true simply because, in general, the MAC is unble to recruit quality big men (Ndour excluded).

Zeke Marshall, Maurice Ndour, Tariq Owens, Javon McRea (not sure how to spell that one), and a few others? Seems like the top teams have at least one great big.  So is it really a guard oriented league?

Mark it down - Quincy Diggs will be running the point for Akron by January.

Won't take that long for him to take over in important situations.  Of course, they only have one game (against Malone) between their trip to Middle Tenn St. on 11/16 and a trip to Cleveland St. on 12/7.  Lots of time off to get him in the rotation at PG in practice.

He was doing a lot of it against Middle Tennessee.  He is a turnover machine.

looks like Treadwell might have Tettelton-itis-
Treadwill skips practice

Tweet from the 16th- "When Basketball doesn't make you happy. What do you turn to???"

Plus Jake Kretzer on crutches after injuring ankle in practice. Hard times in zipper land.
