Bobcat Nation

     Has it been settled that this will be the moniker of all things fan related with regards to the Bobcats? I hear it and, it grates against my sense of Bobcat  individuality.

     How many fan bases are called …….. Nation? It’s not unique. It doesn’t capture the feeling that I get when I think about our teams and university. It’s an easy catchall and I think we can do better.

     When I think about being a fan of Ohio University sports, I think about a brotherhood (personhood?) of people with a shared educational experience or, at the very least, people with a special  insight into the place that many of us feel so strongly about. Of course I don’t want to turn away perspective fans that are just becoming aware of our school, that’s not the Ohio University way. As a matter of fact, I would argue that we, as Bobcats, are an inclusive, gregarious lot.  That said, I still think that we can reach out to prospective new fans and, embrace the ones we have with something that identifies us in a more original way.

    So, who’s with me!?!

Unpopular opinion alert, but I have never liked the "Bobcat Nation" references and never participated.  I don't feel strongly about it, but it just seems silly.  It is kind of like the Cowboys trying to claim to be America's team.  I understand it is mostly just an informal reference to a group of fans and/or acknowledging Bobcats are scattered all over the country (world?)...but I jut thinks it comes off strange to outsiders.

why do we call Bobcat Attack a "message board"? Isn't there something more unique we can call it to separate our selves from all of the other fanbases?

why do we call our basketball arena "The Convo"? isn't there something more unique we can call it to separate ourselves from other schools who play games in their Convocation Center?

why do we call it a "basketball team"? isn't there something more unique we can call it to separate ourselves from all  of the other fan bases for the sport?

why do we call them "student athletes"? isn't there something more unique we can call them to represent OUr players?

why do we say "Stand Up and Cheer?" Isn't that too specific? what about people who are unable to stand up, or simply don't want to? Can they not cheer for the team too? Why is standing a requirement? And why say "Cheer"? Doesn't every fanbase cheer for their team? Isn't there a better way to express OUr support for the team than cheering?

sometimes words are used because they're just words.

I regularly use #bobcatnation on twitter to reach out to the Ohio fanbase. If someone can suggest a better phrase to identify our fanbase as I will gladly start using that.
 

IMO, #bobcatnation sounds better than #Ohiofans or #ohiobobcatfans or #athensohiocollegesportsfans... When I use Bobcat Nation I don't believe the entire nation is cheering for Ohio. It is just words to unite a group of fans.

#bobcatnation and #ouohyeah are the two easiest ways I have found to communicate with other Ohio University parties on social media.

Again, I really don't feel strongly about it...and I realize you don't think that, but sometimes it comes off like that to observers.  But whatever, it really is not a big deal as PP pointed out.

When I first heard of this message board, at first I thought it was a hate website to complain about the current state of the football/basketball team (this was in the early 2000s, so it was possible). Attacking the Bobcats.

Ok, let’s do this…
1)      Still think Bobcat Nation is a lame and lazy way to identify our fan base. Not a big deal of course, some people like pizza, other people are crazy. 
 
2)      Bobcat Attack is a perfect name. You got me there. Love the fact that it has a “Garden Path” sentence fragment in there that makes it ambiguous and mysterious. Heck, it even threw Donuts off for a bit.
 
3)      The Convo. Don’t like the name either. Called Jimbo up last week to get the name changed pronto. I have faith he will get it done soon. I even told him that we could make some money off of it. You’re welcome.
 
4)      Student athletes and basketball team are not names, they are generic terms used to convey understanding when communicating.
 
5)      Stand up and Cheer. Not really sure where you are going with this one… I do like the name and I do think it’s good to stand up and cheer.

I started using the term Bobcat Nation like a decade ago, but I meant it mostly as a joke because there were like 12 people who cared about our sports teams. So I'm thrilled the university (AND THE PLAYERS) have taken that ball and ran with it.

I just wish I had said it to someone of influence so I could take credit for it.

I always preferred Bobcat County... reminds me of back in the day how Ohio's answer to the  Bryant "Big Country" Reeves phenomenon was Andy "Big County" Kanzig... Sure it wasn't much of an answer, but at least we tried.

And the Athens County song always puts me in a good mood...

I understand how the whole "Nation" thing is just a copycat sort of thang. But a lot of our stuff is copycat thangs: blackouts, new unis, good sportsmanship, "tough" anthropomorphic mascots, etc... Keep up with the Joneses and such I guess...

Of course those who want us to stay true to our geographic roots should be lobbying for Bobcat Hollow. Then we could sell the "Ohio" name to O$U and change our moniker to Southeast Ohio University.

Yeah, it came across like that, didn't it? I don't think I invented the term or ever said anywhere outside this board or Facebook, so I doubt I had anything to do with its spread.

One of the many terrible things about the group of people at Ohio University who want O$U to have our name is that they are so clueless to the value of the "Ohio" name they would be just as quick to donate it as they would be to ask even a dollar for it.
 

I kinda like Bobcat Hollow though. We can call the Convo "Holzer Hollow!"
