I'm receiving weekly updates from a friend of mine in Greece regarding DJ.   He's a season ticket holder of Olympiacos, which is a team based in Athens, so he will get to see DJ live very few times as DJ's team is about 4 hours North or Athens.   Here is the email I received today about his last game.  Appears DJ still has the guts of robber wishing and not afriad to take the last shot--though I hope it wasn't a 35 foot desperation bomb.

-----------------------------

The team of DJ Cooper lost in home game from a Turkish team 75 – 77

PAOK “DJ Cooper’s” team was ahead with 23 points at the end of first period but at the end they lost the game

DJ Cooper had 7 rebounds and scored only 3 points at the end of the game to make the score 75-77

Then the Turkish team lost the ball at their attack,

at his last chance DJ Cooper tried to score 2 points to take the game at the extra time

but he lost the shoot

it was their 3rd game for the European league that PAOK participate

OT (a little) - DJ is complaining on twitter about Ohio "letting" Maurice Ndour wear the #5.

We all love you DJ, but your number is not retired YET. If you were a new player and your number was 5, you would want it also. It will be hanging up soon enough.

Leon Williams agrees with him.

I think DJ should respect the process - Ndour will be wearing 5 for two years. Soon, #5 will be retired and DJ will be honored (hopefully). But I agree with him.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that we gave out #5.

I'm a Cubs fan and I'm completely baffled every time they give out #21 (Sammy Sosa). Yeah, yeah, steroids. But it's Sammy Sosa. And it's DJ Cooper. I'm an advocate of respecting past great players and retiring numbers is a great way to do that.

The #5 jersey will one day be retired and Cooper will be across the back (assuming he graduates).

The process though is that he needs to wait a minimum of 10 years, and probably more like 15.

Until then it is an active number, and if a current player requests it they should be able to wear it.

Dave Jamerson (1985-90) wore #33 and it was retired in 2007. Gary Trent (1992-95) as a freshman came in and wore #33.

Did not know the formal process was that long (ridiculous, IMO) -  but it makes sense. It was cool for me to see Trent's # retired, as a student. And it will be amazing for future Bobcats to see Coop's # retired along the line. I will 100% be in the Convo when Coop's #5 is retired.

We do not retire numbers, we honor them (except Frank Baumholtz),. Gary Trent's number 20 is hanging from the rafters and being worn on the back of Ricardo Johnson, and he's not bitching on Twitter! Dave Jamerson does not whine on social media when someone wears his number. DJ needs to have some humility.

You may want to tell Ricardo his number has been retired! Coopers number will not be retired.

You are correct on retire vs honor with the exception of Frank Baumholtz.

Funny thing about Frank Baumholtz jersey - I was at the game as a student in '95 when they retired his number 54. Ed Sears was on the court wearing the same number. I don't remember if Sears wore 54 for the rest of the season or not (I think he did though), but he did switch to #50 the following season.

Ricardo Johnson was already wearing #20 when Trent's number was honored. I'm sure after Ric graduates it will not be worn by another Bobcat.

Yeah - he's being "grandfathered" in. Like Mariano with #42 in the MLB.

I completely understand that it's alright to give #5 out to players before it's retired - I just don't think we should.

Big ED wore the number his entire career. Gary's number was not retired so it will be worn again. Do you really think that JC is going to tell a kid he cannot wear a # he wants if that number is available.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure Sears switched numbers the season after Baumholtz's jersey/number was retired.

1994-95 roster (shows #54) - http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/ohio/1995.html

1996-97 roster (shows #50) - http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/ohio/1997.html

For whatever reason the 95-96 roster is either not there or will not come up.

Was Gary's really not retired? He's number is definitely up in the rafters... I could be wrong, but I thought it was retired (not honored). Still - go respond to my posts in your thread.

I don't really know who makes that decision. IMO, it should be one of those things where OHIO recognizes that #5 was a very special player and sets his number aside for a few years.

All in all, it's not a huge deal.

the numbers in the rafters are-

#20 Gary Trent
#33 Dave Jamerson
#34 Walter Luckett
#54 Frank Baumholtz

#20 and #33 are both worn by players on the 2013-2014 roster too. In fact, 4 players have worn Trent's jersey since he left and 8 players have worn Jamerson's, including Trent his freshman year. Jamerson and Trent were both NBA 1st round draft picks (that scored more points at Ohio than Coop) and you don't hear them throwing a temper tantrum. I'm a fan of DJ but he needs to grow up and show some maturity, he's way out of line.

DJ should have definitely handled this better.

Did he not know that Ndour was wearing 5 until today? We have known since August or so.

I wonder if McDavis has emailed him, lol.

Does anyone here actually know DJ? Is it possible that he is just being sarcastic and maybe it's a running inside joke with the current and former team members?

If he does who are we, to sit in our ivory internet towers, questioning Mr Cooper? I say we all email President McDavis and provide him our thoughts on the matter! Power to the people and the people that play basketball in Greece, the home of democratic thought!

No I do not think he wanted it........Guarantee you DJ has access and if he wanted to pick up the phone or Skype Dr McDavis would take the call. No email necessary. I have found the good Dr to be exceptionally good at being accessible to quite a few folks I know who have phoned, emailed or touched base with him.  I am not sure if he has time to read BA but he has a great finger on the pulse of the U and the individuals who are part of the greater fabric.

Another DJ update from my Greek friend:

PAOK, Cooper’s team played yesterday their 4th game for the European champion

(they participate at the second most important European basketball league, at the first are playing Olympiakos and P?n?thinaikos from Greece)

PAOK won with 77 – 69

now they have 3 wins and 1 loose

Yesterday Cooper played very well according to the numbers (I have NOT seen the game)

He played for 29:06 minutes 2nd from his team,

he scored 16 points 2nd from his team

he gave 4 assists 1st of both teams

he had 4 out of 8 3points (50%)

the only negative: he had 3 turn over 1st from both teams (but for a playmaker playing 3 periods, this is normal)

below are the statistics of PAOK 3 players from yesterday game
