This brings up a question: why does everyone under about 50 say "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" after our O-H-I-O, O-H-I-O, O-H-I-O cheer?  Most of us old farts, say "OHIO" at the end of the cheer.  I think it sounds much better and is more authoritative and gets the point across to those who can't spell that we are the real OHIO!

I'm going to guess it was started by people who were either too lazy to say Ohioooooooooo or some just thought that it's OOOOOHHHHHH (I did until someone told me otherwise, I have since corrected myself).  I'm going to bank more on that everyone is unaware of how it actually goes.

We never said . . .  "Ohiooooooooooooooooooo" . . . we always said, "OHIO!"  Ended the cheer with a short, crisp, declarative "OHiO!"  You are probably right that those who corrupted it to "Ohioooooooooooooooo" started a slippery slope to "OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

It's supposed to be "Hio!" You know, "O-H-I-O-Hio!"

And to think I've been wrong and thought it was a tribute all these years...

Regarding the comment about saying just "OHHHHH" at the end of the O-H-I-O cheer: when I was a student back in the late 60's we finished with "HIO" after the last "O" was said. It makes so much more sense. I have a small section of fans near my season seats in football that now say it correctly, but how to get the rest? I was thinking about connecting with the O-Zone leadership and the band (110 and alumni) to see if we can get back to that. Maybe those of you on campus or with connections to those groups can mention it. Just my two cents.

After the Gulf spill, I was seriously wondering if Sohio signs wouldn't make a comeback for their stations.

I was looking for that too.  I actually thought that would be a good idea before the spill, and even more so afterwards.  I always thought that a lot of Ohioans had a preference for SOHIO because of Buckeye pride.  (Referring here, of course, to the state not the state university of Columbus.)  I really think if they changed back to SOHIO they'd see a noticeable uptick in their sales in Ohio. Do you remember what Standard Oil of Ohio signs in bordering states said in place of SOHIO?  It was BORON.

So, what did Miss Piggy say when when she pulled into the SOHIO station?

"I'll take the BORON!"
