Torvik has this as a 5pt loss 83-78.
RPI has it as a 12pt loss 86-74.

If we defend like we did yesterday we'll give up 90.

Ark state game meant what? Defense takes effort and when a game doesn’t really mean that much …Look forward to a much better defensive game against Toledo.

Effort doesn't require anything but want to. Literally nothing else. Pride, respect, competitiveness, focus, mind set (RIP Coach Hunter).

It's not something you turn off and on. You're always creating habits, good or bad.

Thankfully Boals and this team understand that better than you and I saw no "we don't care about this game". What I did see was a bad defensive team continue to not perform on that end and get absolutely taken to the woodshed.

We hopefully get Reef back for Toledo which can only help but our on-ball defense cannot be Reef or bust. Nothing tells me we can just flip the light switch and magically become a good defensive team just because we're playing Toledo.

They will put up 80. The question is can we keep them under 90.

So you're saying that Boals teaches them to put out effort only if the game measn something? Maybe that's why we have NET ranking of 169. How does he decide which games mean something and which don't? I guess they can turn effort on and off like a faucet.

It would be great too if he announced beforehand when the upcoming games didn’t mean enough to give any effort. Maybe during his weekly show with Russ? I could then put out little effort to get to the games or watch and maybe do something more productive, you know, like maybe rearranging my sock drawer.

Maybe I'm just from another generation but I don't think in 60 years of playing competitive sports (yes, the OU golf league is a competitive sport), I've ever said to myself, "ho hum, this game doesn't mean anything." If you/they are keeping score, the game means something.

If we won that game we would be talking about an elite offense rather than the shitbox defense.

I wouldn't spend another second thinking about it. They shot 50% from the field and lost because the other team shot 60. An extremely rare night for both teams. Not worth a deep dive. We know their defense is bad. I'm happy to lose games like that if it means we actually look like a competitive team that can make shots. We win that game 9 times out of 10 vs a MAC team. If we were putting up bricks all over the floor and lost by 20-30 I'd feel differently, but they did some good things that can be built upon. A loss sucks, but they have to be feeling confident in their shot heading into a tough stretch.

Not sure if that's true. But if it is, it's more an indictment on how historically bad the MAC is and little about how well Ohio shot the ball.

I got a little curious. It's a lot of data so I only looked at Akron/Toledo/CMU/BGSU/OU (Current 1-5).

- This season in games involving a MAC squad, the team that scores 87+ wins 81% of the time.

- 7 teams lost. OU twice vs non MAC teams. 4 of those games went to OT.

So I bet if you really dug into it... mac vs mac... probably higher than 90%.

You mean like the 23rd ranked conference in NET rankings?
The NET rankings that say the WAC is #13, yet they only have one decent team and that one is from a (cough-cough) "school" that can't even be taken seriously?

Their software must be smoking Walter White's blue meth.

How do you define decent? The second best team in their league is Seattle -- look at their record by quadrant:https://bracketologists.com/team/seattle-redhawks

Then look at us: https://bracketologists.com/team/ohio-bobcats

Edit: The MAC as a whole is 0-23 vs Q1, 2-26 vs Q2, 25-48 vs Q3 teams. That's truly awful. I mean, I know you just posted all of this because you like to talk about Grand Canyon U's academics a lot, but there's basically no argument that we're on par with the WAC.

GCU has academics now? When did that happen?

US News and World Report rankings doesn't seem to think so.

Who cares? College athletes are paid professional free agents now. Academics literally has nothing to do with anything anymore (sadly). Grand Canyon is going to continue to do just fine and they and the WAC are running laps around the MAC.

Who cares? Well, with all the ridicule of Kent State on here ("Kent read, Kent write, etc) apparently people do care about academics. However, when you look up the academic ranking of Kent State, you will see they are many light years ahead of GCU. I agree that the new "wild west" NCAA with little to no rules enforcement is an embarrassment to supposedly amateur athletics and the concept of student-athletes. GCU is the only for-profit D-1 basketball team. It's a publicly traded stock on the Nasdaq just like Starbucks and Dollar Tree.

If the NCAA had any balls, Tennessee football would already be on ten lifetime death penalty bans. Then again, if Aunt Debbie had huevos she would be Uncle Debbie.

He's not Penske, er, Zips material.

Having said that, and given how seldom you follow my advice, I fully expect to see him at Rhodes Arena, along with the other 12 or so student fans, cheering on the blue and gold.

On the occasion I see a Penske rental van/truck on the road, I invariably think of the Penske file.

January 26, 2016

We won at Toledo 81-79. Were up 7 at the half and held on. Kenny Kaminski led us with 22 pts and 5 3's. Antonio Campbell had 15 and 9. Jaaron Simmons had 12 pts and 17 assists.

Toledo was led by Nathan Boothe and Jonathan Williams, each with 21.

Does your son have a thing for concrete and steel? Speaking as someone who went to Akron as a freshman then transferred to Ohio, I'd suggest buying him a nice windbreaker because he'll get plenty of that up there.
