AJB: 28%
Hunter: 26%
Elmore: 25%
Reef: 25%

Note: Hunter and Elmore shot 40% from 3 last season.

They all seem to be hesitating more and more now when open from 3, allowing defenses to pack the lane area.

When you have a team built around 4-5 smurfish sized guards, NONE of which is a go to 3 pt. shooter and your inside game is reliant on a smaller slighter framed PF with less than ideal bench depth behind him, it’s probably not going to lead to a lot of successful outcomes. This may prove to be one of the weakest rosters we have seen in Athens in a long while.

I....can't argue with a single point.

Saving grace is the MAC sucks. We'll likely still finish above 500 in the conference almost by default.

Really need to hope for a recovery to the mean for Elmore and Hunter, or I think this team's dead in the water.

I don't really see Elmore as much of a shooter, I would classify him as more of a slasher. Its quite possible that he is regressing back down to the mean this year, we've only seen one year of stats.

Hunter is an interesting case. He has an ugly shot but seems to find the net. I would guess that his % only goes up from here, the question is how much? We will definitely need him to get close to last year if we're going to see success in the MAC. I think shot selection will be the key to that answer and the selection hasn't been great to date.

We haven't had a dead eye shooter on the roster since Jordan Dartis' Junior year.

Miles Brown shot almost 45% from 3 last year. That's very good.

Miles has steadily improved year over year from deep, but he also doesn't shoot nearly the volume as some of the shooters of the past have. Maybe we were spoiled with Tommy Freeman, Nick Kellogg and Jordan Dartis for too long that we forgot what it's like to not have one.

Could the lower percentage of success be a result of many more shots being taken?

Reading a study that says that if a team only shot threes the make rate would fall from typical 33% make rate to below 25% because the three is easier to guard when it is shot in greater numbers by teams. Easier because the shots made are usually catch and shoot or the wide open look and not self-created Steph Curry style by most mortals. More hands in faces when the defense doesn't have to help as much inside.

Are the Bobcats shooting 3's at the same rate, than last season? Perhaps get the ball to Clayton inside the arc and see if he can hit the 2 pointer at greater than 50% clip. This works the defense, may result in more fouls committed and may result in more stick backs from teammates.

I really want to see Ajay Sheldon start translating his exceptional shooting from the perimeter in warmups to his time in the game. To my (untrained) eye, he looks like the best shooting guard on our side of the floor until the game starts.

As for Hunter, for all the good things he does, shooting the 3 this year is not one of them. If this is more who he is than last year (shot a much higher percentage last year), I'd at least like to see him shoot in more moderation. His games this year with 5+ attempts from 3, he is:

1/9 (win)
1/5 (loss)
1/9 (loss)
1/5 (win)
1/5 (loss)
2/10 (loss)

It's a small sample size this early, but the team is 2-4 when he shoots 5+ 3-point shots and 3-0 when he shoots less than 5 3-point shots.

Agree with your points on Hunter. Shot selection needs to improve there, he has too much experience as a PG to struggle with shot selection. Getting Miles Brown back will certainly help and take some pressure off our current guard rotation.

Jaylin's 3 point shooting took a big step up last year and was a big reason he exceeded our expectation coming in from Old Dominion. Unfortunately so far it looks like that may have been an aberration and he is returning to sub-par perimeter shooting he had in his 3 years at ODU.

Reminder that our best 3 point shooter last season was easily Miles Brown. I was constantly calling for him to shoot more and the AJ's to shoot less.
