YSU not a bad team. We are 1-2 vs the Horizon. Bobcats looking more like an average MAC team. Which isn't good.
The Bobcats have defeated a terrible Detroit team picked to finish near the bottom of the Horizon conference. They have lost to YSU and CSU. Youngstown and Cleveland St were selected 4 and 5 behind Northern Ky, Milwaukee and Wright State. Hopefully no more Horizon teams left on the schedule. Marshall is bad, so Ohio should have no problem with them and throw in a sure win with Defiance.

This game was awful to watch. Didn't seem like we were running a offense, just playground pickup ball. We put up weak shots in the paint if we were not spinning around looking to pass after putting our head down and dribbling there.

Why so much dribbling?

We were in position to rebound but never put a body on anyone. They would just jump up and grab it as we waited for it to fall to us.

Can we recruit someone who can make a free throw?

Looking to be a long season...

I think we need to pump the breaks as though the season is lost after last night. It was a clunker of a game, those happen. Multiple P5’s lost buy games this season to mid-majors. YSU is a tough team and will probably finish higher than the projected 5th in the Horizon.

None of our losses have been bad. Meaning, we haven’t looked overmatched due to our lack of size we were all concerned about coming into the season (s/o AJC and Hadaway’s progression) We beat ourselves each time whether it was poor FT and/or 3PT shooting.

There’s a good chance the outcome of these games are different with Miles playing; we might only be a 1 loss team.

This isn’t a bad team, but they played bad last night. We’ve seen what this team can be when clicking on cylinders. We’ve gotten more out of AJC and Hadaway than we were expecting this season. We went 15-19 from the line last night which is a significant improvement from previous games. Jaylin and EJ4 were both perfect.

Getting Miles healthy helps our 3PT shooting and spreads the ball out more. No idea what’s going on with AJB, but we all know how integral he is to us offensively. He’s been so bad recently I’d like to think he can only go up from here.

Last year I thought we threw it TOO MUCH into the post and let Dwight stand with the ball for 10 seconds before shooting. I wished for more of a flow to the offense. This year, we don't pass it ENOUGH into the post and OUr guards just dribble, attack, retreat, dribble. I feel like Jaylin is pick up gaming it right now and so is Elmore. I'd love to see AJ Brown or Elmore James post up. James is strong enough to bully his way and AJ needs to get some easy buckets because he has lost his stroke. And finally, the free throws. Holy Crap. This might be the worst free throw shooting team in our history. I feel like whenever any of our guys step to the line they are going to miss them both. Making one is a bonus to me. That will not cut it.

We had people open and they chose to dribble into a crowd and get stuck. It was painful to watch. Definitely want to see more passing except not what we have been doing, to the other team. Seems they need a reset and get back to our game. There is talent, it just seems like we have no direction.

Crisp passing and ball movement hasn't been the M.O. of our guards. Too busy dribbling trying to figure out when to chuck a 3 or drive into a crowd.

Seems this team is built on driving and slashing rather than motion and passing. That's fine if you incorporate the drive and kick with the occasional ball reversal and/or pick and pop (that BvP was so good at). Clayton would be really well suited for the same role except if he's popping we have literally nobody inside for rebounds. That ties Boals offense a bit IMO.

Let's give YSU some credit. They're loaded with athletes and have a solid coach.

This is pretty much where I'm at. I still think this squad will be pretty good in the MAC. We're trying to figure things out on both sides of the court which is to be expected after losing a dominant post presence in Dwight Wilson.

None of the top four MAC teams have done much to convince me that any of them are ahead of each other at this moment. Get the sloppy performances out of the way now and hope they start playing their best basketball in January and February.

They were on my list of predicted losses. They're always a tough, fast team. Calhoun has done a hell of a job.

We have our issues, but I wish we ran more. I'm talking push for 100+ every night. Get up and down. Our PF is 6'4" I can't believe the whole offensive gameplan isn't just run dudes off the floor and if we lose some nights bc shots aren't falling - then we lose some nights, but at least we have an identity. What is our identity right now? I've watched almost every game, and I have no idea what to expect from anyone on the floor, outside of Jaylin. I don't even know what I expect from a gameplan perspective. We have no inside game, but we hardly have an outside game either. We're stuck in a 4-guard purgatory where none of them know they should/want to step up and be the one to take the shot.

Three years ago to the day, Ohio beat Youngstown St. in the Convo 101-46 in a game that included an NCAA record 40-0 run. Last night, Ohio lost to YSU 78-72, a staggering 61-pt swing.

Either the YSU program, under coach Calhoun, is trending up or Ohio's is trending down. Or is it both?

That was Cleveland State, but your point still stands.

Cleveland State trending up... YSU trending up....

I never like to see these inter-state losses from outside the conference. Especially not multiples.

They are good no doubt. I just didn't like seeing how lost we looked during the game. I hope we can get some rhythm offensively.

Disappointing that their 8-foot-7/150 pound center got three dunks. YSU was his only D-1 offer if I heard correctly. The other offer was from something called Emery&Henry College (?) which could be NAIA (?)

I feel like, for a team with so many guards, we don't have a lot of consistent shooters. The best shooting guard we have, in my opinion, is Miles Brown. Obviously, he has been out with injury for a while. We've had some good shooting games, but nothing consistent. Last night's stats will be skewed because we finally caught fire in the last 100 seconds when the outcome of the game was already decided. As others have mentioned, the ball gets "stuck" at times with our guards, also.

I know the last two games have been against decent quality opponents, but they still make me hesitant with expectations for this group. Right now, this team feels like it can beat or lose to anyone on any given night.

I would love to know what the issues are with Miles and IJ. If we are without these 2 players for the year it will be difficult to field a winning team. These last 2 games against sub-par teams shows our weaknesses. We need another guard to score and a big, particularly to spell Clayton.

Ugh, this was a difficult one to watch. Some takeaways:

Reef is still a spark plug on this team, came up with big baskets down the stretch to keep us somewhat in it.

AJC had the best block I've ever seen watching OU basketball. Hope he isn't hurt too bad, was grimacing after he got up.

What the heck has happened to AJB? Seems like a mental / confidence issue - him not being his normal smiling self pre game and during game really gave it away for me - I hope he can bounce back.

Hadwaway - My guy Aiden stepped up big for us and scored a season high - he should get AJB's starting spot with how well he is playing. Aggressive and hustles. Still think he can be a loose cannon at times but #CaptainChaos

Overall, just thought YSU bullied us in the paint and capitalized on mistakes we made passing in the second half. Onto Marshall, I'm not taking this loss too hard as YSU is shaping to be a power in the Horizon this year. The guys will rebound back. God, just hope we get Miles and IJ back soon.

Totally agree about #CaptainChaos....Aidan Hadaway. Sit AJB and have him come off the bench as the 6th man and see if that is the spark he needs.

Dealing with potentially fragile ego here. Start AJB but insert Hadaway as soon as you see AJ is struggling. Hadaway seems willing to contribute in any way he can.

I'm sure it's somewhere else, but is there any kind of a timeline on their return?

The lack of Miles seems to be a big factor in my mind in the floor general department.

Boals mentioned in the postgame presser that Aiden was the only player with a positive +/- (+11!) against YSU.

+1. A bunch of guys here felt AJB was off to U. Florida after this year. Chances are slim and none at this point. Sadly, at my age I can still hit 7 out of 10 FT's.

And it seems we have virtually no one who wants to have an assist. One on one selfish play won't win many games. No doubt some guys have the ability to go one on one and hit a shot. That kind of play has us as a middle of the pack team.
