I was hoping the MAC would be better next year. But with the mass exodus of talent from second division teams and Buffalo, it looks like the league could have its worst season ever, maybe in the 20s? It's really hard to understand what's going on at NIU and Central.
+1. If the bottom six or even the top 6 teams can't retain talent or effectively build / develop then the MAC is in some serious trouble. But, I can imagine programs such as WMU, Central and NIU don't support basketball as much as football or other sports. Also could be cultural issues as well within those programs which might explain the mass exodus from these programs.
The struggles of the directional Michigans & NIU makes me want to revisit my often brought up dream scenario of a super-tight conference and orchestrate a trade with the Horizon League. Those 4 for Youngstown St, Wright St, Cleveland St & Northern Kentucky. I know football and other considerations ruin it, I just have always thought tight geographical conferences are a good thing especially at the mid-major level as the proximity maximizes rivalries and overall buzz.
You nailed it with football. WMU and NIU have brought the MAC BCS appearances in the last decade; giving those schools life in the conference. Otherwise, I agree in theory. Realignment of the MAC’s top programs with another conference’s is something I’d like to see.

You can make the argument right now for Ohio to be preseason 1 or 2 in conference. The addition of Myles would cement it.
Potentially, and agree with the addition of Foster we would be in those talks. Although I do believe Kent so far could repeat next year with the addition of Bass and retainment of most of their depth despite losses of Carry, Jacobs and Thomas.
Even without Foster, I think we’re already in those talks. A solid big makes that much stronger of a case. Bass, Payton, and Sullinger is a solid foundation. I just don’t think the gap is as wide as it was with Carry, Jacobs, and Thomas — if at all.

I've asked before - but what would it take for YSU to jump into D1? Other than the proximity to Akron AND Kent, which would potentially lead the AD's to voting against inclusion - if Tressel didn't do it - was there even an appetite to make the leap?

Basketball I think we can and should do that yesterday.

I would imagine the other schools in the league don't want yet another Ohio school to compete against for talent, dollars, etc. Also I think their football stadium would have to be upgraded, unless we're talking just basketball.

So what are we saying here? We're just going to have a league of all Ohio schools plus NKU, Buffalo and Balls? No thanks.

Every year that goes by it makes less and less sense for Ohio not to be in the same conference as Marshall. I realize that a lot of people have a personal grudge against their arrogance but if it comes down to Marshall vs Youngstown State the answer is clearly Marshall.

The perfect name for this thread!

The comments have transferred from players moving, up-down-out, a new conference and the Three Stooges and a potpourri of other thoughts and beliefs.

Marshall & WKU...while giving MTSU a big middle finger.

What would compel Marshall to come back to the MAC now that they've move to the Sunbelt? If anything, a better idea is OHIO moving to the Sunbelt, because right now, I'd say that's a slightly better league than the MAC. Since that's probably not happening soon...

This is always my favorite thread of the year. It allows you to go down rabbit holes you never thought you'd go down. The twists and turns...the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Sprinkle in a little of The Whiz talk and the yearly transfer portal thread never, ever disappoints.

Do we know of any other bigs we have seriously offered other than Foster?

I haven’t seen any offers; just expressed interest in TJ Nesmith (D2). Outside of Ike and Shereef’s commitments; I think he was the last (few weeks back) — but most recent new name I saw. Doesn’t mean there’s not someone new that’s in the pipeline.

I just can't imagine rolling with two virtual unknowns in Wiz (known, but unknown if he'll improve) and IJ going into next season. There's gotta be something/someone else in the works.

Curtis Harrison IV of Fiami has entered his name into the portal making it six now for them in the portal. Eastern Mich got a commit from Cyril Martynov, a PF transfer from Georgia Tech. Interesting because they have Billingsley and Geeter on their depth chart. Maybe moving him to center?

They had high-ish hopes for Harrison that he could be that rock solid typical MAC PF that they haven't had in ages. Injury bug has been unkind to him.

We’ll bring someone in. Foster is obviously choice number 1. I’m sure they’re communicating with potential fallbacks if he chooses elsewhere.

Honestly I'd be fine with just a 9 team all-Ohio conference, but it feels like you have to have 12 or at least 10. Dayton & UC (and obviously OSU) are admittedly beyond our reach. If I had my pick of 3 others, it'd be Ball St, Marshall & Buffalo. Buffalo is a geographical outlier but they are to most everyone and fit the group well.

With all of the skilled guards and wings we have, I truly believe that Foster would thrive--that being said, if we don't get him to come to Athens, I am certain Jeff Boals will get us a more serviceable big than Wiz who can come in and get us rebounds and some points. I would be just fine with a Sylvester Ogbonda type of guy who is a good teammate, unselfish, plays hard and gives us 8 and 6 a night. That coupled with Wiz and what I think will be a majorly-improved Ezuma (remember BVP when he came off a redshirt year?) we can be solid in the post.

Was just about to post this. Toledo is going to be interesting next season. Maddox, Cochran, and Wight are solid, but also a step down from last season’s big 3.

+1. Even without the additions of Shereef and Ike, I thought we had a strong case for Foster. Having them in the wings prior only strengthened our positioning. I don’t think there’s anything else Boals could have done to set us up to be an appealing destination for Foster. I also agree that the big we add doesn’t need to be a word beater; just be able to play both ways.
