According to Russ: Stevie grabbed that rebounded and yelled, "I'm strong!" Cunningham was offended and pushed him.

So much funny in that story.

That had me laughing as well although I'm not sure that's really the reason.  From watching it it looked like Cunningham thought Stevie elbowed Robertson.

Watching it live, I thought Cunningham might not have heard the whistle and was trying to foul.  Certainly didn't look as bad to me on the replay... But I like JSF's account better haha

Cunningham is low skill thumper. He was hacking us inside on every bound. Best part was the tech pissed off their coach. He was. On stop whiner.

It didn't look like that severe of a thing to me, but the ref was ALL over it. No hesitation in T'ing Cunningham up. Makes me think the refs had had enough of his behavior throughout the game. He seemed to have been whining and complaining the whole game.

that was even better than when Stevie got clipped in the onions while diving for a loose ball in front of the home broadcasters and you could hear him groaning through their mics as the camera zooms in to him doubled over in pain. it was pretty funny in that "it looks like it hurts but I'm glad its not me" type of way.

Yep, that T was building. Lot of bumping between him/TJ/Jon after stoppages while going to the benches. I think our players are just fine with a chippy game.

Seems as if Cunningham had an idea to show up the 'home town' team for not recruiting him today. He just wasn't good enough to do it.

Hey, I thought the exact same thing. Cunningham seemed very chippy today. He didn't get to play when we blew them out of the Convo a couple of years ago. This was his big chance and he blew it. Didn't even take a shot today.

UNCA coach and announcers remarked on that in the post game. Very uncharacteristic for him as far as shots. Not so sure about the other part.

Yeah, we can't get inside the kid's head and know whether going up against Ohio was a personal grudge match, but with his demeanor and play it wouldn't surprise me at all.

He also tried to be a "point center" late in the game. It was kind of funny to watch him try to do more than he was physically capable of. You could tell UNCA's players really wanted to win his game. I felt like our guys were not 100% into the game early, but did a nice job responding in the 2nd half. They just laughed at Cunningham when things were getting chippy.

I want a T-shirt of Stevie jumping for a rebound with the caption "I'm strong" in a large font.

The Big South broadcast had a replay from under the bucket with Stevie basically looking into the camera and yelling.  That would be the shot, if you could get it.

The push looked worse than it was.  The camera angle showed Stevie's right shoulder moving a lot, and the ref who called it had the same angle.  But I think it was called because it was well after the whistle; you get the same thing in football.

I would have recruited the kid.  He has good skills.  That said, he made the game a personal thing and that rarely if ever works.  As for Stevie, he's the best thespian we've had since Snoopy Graham and before him Spindle Graves.

It's all about the system and fit. coach Groce was our coach when this young man was coming out of Waterford. Nothing against him, but his style of play would not go with Coach Groce's style of play, that's why Coach Groce did not recurit the young man.

Good and valid points.  That said sometimes on an individual player basis, outstanding coaching can mold a player to a style.  All I know is I like what I saw yesterday in terms of a guy who could play in the MAC.

And this is why I love stevie and why all the haters need to appreciate him for what he is. Last year at MAC tourney I talked to numerous fans from other schools. Usually centered around DJ and Reg but several would say same thing about Stevie "man I hate that guy..but I would take him on my team anyday. Guy is just energy and fearlessness."

Kid could definitely play yet, our staff at the time felt his strengths were not a fit for their program.

I talked to Groce casually about both DJ Cunningham and Chase Fieler when they were Seniors in high school. While he didn't get into any criticism of either player, I was convinced he was going after a different caliber of recruit. Remember, Reggie Keely and Ivo Baltic were Freshmen and both showed a lot of promise. They were both a lot more athletic than Cunningham, even if they were an inch or two shorter. Fieler was a bit of an unknown and grew 6" his Senior year of high school. After Ivo's sophomore year, that looked like a great decision to pass on him. Maybe in hindsight, Fieler would have been a nice signee. He's had a good run at FGCU and is a high quality individual. With what I've seen from Cunningham, Groce was 100% correct to pass on him. I think Cunningham also knows UNCA is as big time as he is qualified for.

Did anyone else hear Russ making I'm strong comments during the Kent radio broadcast? I laughed out loud several times.
