Since the Bobcats are playing Sunday and most of us will have our behinds attached to the couch all day taking in college basketball I thought would ask who is your favorite opposing coach and why? The only opposing coach that must be excluded is the late great Charlie Coles because most everyone loved him even though he coached and played at Miami. In fact let's also make it a rule the coach must be currently coaching and not retired.

I will get the list started. Although the Bobcats took a year off from playing them, my favorite coach in the whole wide world is Marshall's one and only Tom Herrion. He took over a nice team and in less than four seasons has run it completely into the ground. Now lets be honest, there have been many unsuccessful coach's in Marshall basketball history but none that would lay face down on the court and throw a fit like a 3 year old pounding his fist into the floor following a bad call. His post game interviews are priceless as you are breathlessly waiting for his head to explode right off his shoulders.

Thank you Coach Herrion for your outstanding job in Huntington and here's hoping you get a contract extension for life.

PS. So much for Marshall fans saying Ohio dropped them this season because we lost so many key players and we were afraid we would lose. Ha.

I think we would have beaten Marshall this season, but it wouldn't have been a blowout. At times they play pretty well. Just not consistent.

Turk has been starting for them. So much for their contention over the past several years that Ohio hasn't had any players who would start for Marshall.

Herrion actually was a good coach at his previous stops. Hard to understand what has happened at Marshall.

I'm going to limit this question to MAC coaches. I actually like watching Akron's teams play. I don't endorse everything Napoleon Dambrotaparte does in that program, but when they get it going they are fun to watch. I like Coach Kowalczyk at Toledo. Like this style and integrity. I might like Hurley at Buffalo but he hasn't been around long enough to know him.

I think the MAC schools have made some really good hires in basketball in recent years. Can't think of any MAC coaches I think are really incompetent. Central, Ball State, Buffalo, etc., I believe have good futures.

Not many coaches have been around the league long enough for me to have a favorite, but I would certainly play for Kowalczyk if I were a recruit.

If you want to go on a national scale, my favorite blue blood coach is Izzo. Non-blue bloods, I've always been impressed every time I read about or listen to Jim Larranaga. I always get the impression that his players love him and that he has created fun programs.

Anybody says Dambrot and they're not invited to my birthday party.

Thanks for the morning laughs on these!

In a serious response to the question, I can't think of a current coach in the MAC that I particularly like in the way I did Charlie.  I used to like Reggie Witherspoon, and frankly can't think of an opposing coach I can like or respect that much. Hurley is unproven, and Kowalczyk is someone I just don't know much about.

If we're talking outside the MAC, then that's much easier to name someone.  As a UC fan as well, I'm a big fan of Mick Cronin's no nonsense, straight forward personality. Reminds me of Groce a little.  I also, happen to like Shaka Smart, Jay Wright, Tom Izzo, and Greg Marshall.
