Try to not think of numbers if you can. Curious to see which fanbase is least respected here.

Define "nasty":

1. Ugly (as in "she's nasty")

2. Badass (as in the Reds "Nasty Boys")

3. Janet Jackson's nasty

Meanest, most inappropriate, "can't believe they're chanting that," etc.

Did you think anybody but Akron would be number one?

My unfair snap to judgment knee-jerk impressions of fan bases:

Ohio - The most loyal, passionate and largest and it isn't even close.  I sound biased and cocky but I don't know how anyone could deny it.  Unmatched school pride.
Toledo - The next best.  One of very few MAC programs to have a following outside of just students and alumni.
Western Michigan - Cynical but solid, a strong core group of fans.
Ball State - Generally pleasant and would be supportive of even a mediocre team if they could just get it together.
Akron - Incredible run has led to a solid fan base (albeit kind of pompous and/or ignorant in spots) but I wonder how quickly they would flee if and when they fall on hard times.
Buffalo - Biased dreamers, hot and cold.  At least some passion.  Least amount of conference pride, it seems.
Bowling Green - Very little school pride but support is decent when the wins are there.
Kent State - Ditto.
Central Michigan - Sort of bandwagon, but some solid fans.
Northern Illinois - Pure bandwagon.
Miami - Non-existent, nearly hopeless.
EMU - Non-existent, hopeless.

Interesting question.  I asked a similar question to a group of our sales reps this summer.  I asked them to describe their number one competitor in one word.  It was amazing how similar the responses were.  I them asked them to write down what their number one competitor would say about them.  Again, the responses were amazingly similar.  My point is that for some reason Akron heads this list but if you were to ask Akron fans the same question, we would probably head the list.  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Toledo has a decent fan base.  NIU has good support, but only for football.  Kent has the best individual fan.  Ohio has the best fans in the two sports combined.  Everyone else is awful. If you want proof, turn on any basketball game not involving Ohio or any MACtion football game that isn't in Athens.

I don't know that I can classify any school as having a collectively nasty fan base.  Each school has its own idiot fans, Ohio included.  I know Buffalo's students chanted "USA" when Mo had the ball, but I've heard a student in the OZone yell, "Hey ref, I hope you die in a car wreck on the way home" within the past year.

I'm just glad we don't have to go to Morgantown on a regular basis.  That's where the nastiest fans I've seen reside.

I cannot participate in a poll that does not include all possible choices.

There are always 3 nasty fans. At EMU that means they have a higher percentage of Nasty fans. At Ohio that means it has the lowest ?

I wonder where Marshall would have ranked had they been included?

I was at the WVU/VaTech game years ago they called Marcus Vick the N-Word all game and threw batteries at the Tech players..they actually cheered if they heard the clunk of a players helmet getting hit.... Never went to another game.

I don't judge their fan base as a whole form it, but I think I've had more issues with Kent fans than any other to be honest.  For example, My wife still refuses to go back to the MAC Tournament because of all the crap lobbed at her (F bombs included) by Kent fans for just wearing an Akron Alumni shirt.  (I understand the rivalry, but 10 guys singling out one woman is ridiculous).  I've also witnessed Kent fans spitting at opposing fans as they walked to their cars following an early season OOC game at the MACC.

The funny thing about Kent fans is that they're older and they act like that. I understand getting grief from OHIO and Akron students, but in 2001 when I started making the annual trek to Cleveland I was amazed to see that Kent fans are a bunch of 35 to 55 year olds who act like that.

You are one of the most level-headed posters here, so I don't doubt your stories, but they're very different from my experiences in Kent. The overriding emotion I sense from most fans in the MACC lately is apathy. I've been going to Ohio games at Kent for at least five years now, so I was around when the team was better and fans actually cared, but I never experienced any hostility.

The kind of stuff you describe is ridiculous and unacceptable from any fan base. There's a way to be "nasty" without crossing the line. I voted for Akron in the poll, but I did so halfheartedly. Most of the Akron fans I actually interact with are perfectly decent. I think vivid one-time experiences and loudmouths on chat boards make it easy to judge (and misjudge) an entire fan base due to a handful of clowns. It'd be nice if our conference had more than a handful of schools with any kind of fan base -- nasty or otherwise.

The worst experience I ever had in the MAC was at Buffalo. Sitting behind the bench the students to the right were just abusive...even through the Anthem and introduction of the veterans in attendance..... Yelling stupid stuff through the game that was classless and welll...just plain stupid. Marshall fans ....no description for them but I had to talk to a young officer to have the mid 60's guys curb their mouths as I watched G over the course of 20 minutes roll into a slow boil. When he leaned over after hearing one of players referred to as  "long dick with ears" and said "I been listening to your shit for too long....I may go outta here ina paddy wagon but if you don't shut up you are going out in an ambulance" I spoke with the officer and reminded him that he stood there prior to the game and listened to the announcer talk about what was acceptable. He looked at G and saw his face and walked over and told the fat middle aged men to can it.

Worst Nastiest fans by far were the beer swilling, drunk farmers and rednecks in the Civic Center on the end line by the bench at Peoria for the bradley game. I was actually embarrased for our trainer even to go down to the end of the bench with the comments they were throwing out there. I looked behind them for the trough where they fed those pigs.

Don't get me wrong, I 'm not saying "All Kent fans are bad" I'm saying "Those Kent fans were bad".  (I didn't even vote for Kent in this poll)  Funny thing is other than the MAC tournament nothing was really directed at me or anyone I was with.  My best friend was in the Kent band during their glory years, so he used to get me in for free.  I've seen more games in the MACC than anywhere outside the Convo and the Q.  More opportunities to see the bad ones.

54 voted. More than any other MAC board has active posters - by a factor of about 5.

If I were a fan of a MAC school that has a poor fanbase, I would vote for that "myself" in a poll like this to try to create the illusion of a legitimate fanbase.

While you don't want 35 of 54 votes like Akron had because that is clearly just trashy, I think a couple votes is superior to 0 votes.
