This may be the tip of iceberg. In the 90's you only had an A and B Block wireless carrier. Consumers wanted more options which spawned the onslaught of regional carriers (Dobson, Suncomm, Cincinnati Bell Wireless, Iowa Wireless, etc.). Along with these giants (TW and Comcast) will be more consolidation in both cable, internet and wireless services.

While Wheeler (FCC Chairman) chases insignificant battles such as getting unlock codes for consumers, we will have less choices in the long haul which will eventually take us back to the 90's where the carriers will control pricing until we figure it our again. Over the years, less choices in the telecom arena has never been good for the consumer.

As JSF mentioned, net neutrality could create some major fireworks if the telecoms who own the fiber/wireless spectrum decide to make it difficult or impossible for companies like Netflix to be accessible. In addition, if you are a start up content company, good luck.

But at least all consumers will have an unlock code for their 2 year old outdated wireless device :)

Google needs to fast track their Fiber service.
I'd love that, I'm just not sure they really want to be in that business. I'd love to see them go all in on it, but they don't seem to have the inclination to do a major rollout. Honestly at this point I think advanced wireless technology might be the best thing going to eventually compete, but realistically that's probably a decade away at minimum for competitive home use.

Confluence of google has got to have A TON of cash on hand and bringing totally solid 'net alternative to the peoples is a huge opportunity.

Makes great sense at a glance.

It sure was! I was very surprised by that, as Google tends to be an algorithm and automation company, I am surprised to see them getting into a business on a wider scale that's bogged down in local permitting and customer support, but more power to them. They clearly have the capital to do it, I just didn't think it would line up with their business plan. They obviously stand to benefit from increased internet usage through ad sales; clearly things have gone well enough in their first couple test markets to consider expansion.

Google may be heavy into algorithm and automation but I'll bet ya that they'd never characterize themselves as that if you asked them.  Probably, they'd say they're into electronic conveyance and archiving of information.  The answer must be in they're SEC filings.

I actually thought of you when I saw that. At least I'm way out in the cold, so I don't have that so... close... feeling.

FWIW, I've had Time Warner, FIOS, and Comcast--currently have had Comcast for the past two years. Now, I had cable with Time Warner and FIOS and now have trimmed to just internet with Comcast but I have had no problems at all with Comcast. My worst experiences were with Time Warner, while FIOS and Comcast have been equally reliable.
