I mean if Elmore is done for the season, pull the Nicol redshirt and get this guy experience. He probably wouldn’t stay the full five years in Athens anyway. In this day and age of college hoops, it doesn’t matter.

I'm guessing Nicol isn't ready to contribute. Another swing and miss?

If Nicol can’t get minutes half-way through the season with AJB and Elmore out, one can say that.

Probably doesn't want to waste his redshirt just to play 15 games on a below .500 team.

Exactly. The dude isn't ready yet and the plan was to give him an extra year to develop.

Making rash decisions in moments of desperation isn't a recipe for success.

Stick to the plan and take some lumps this year.

Or scrap the plan, waste a redshirt, and hope that makes the difference between finishing 8-10th in the MAC and somewhere in the top 6, and losing in first round in Cleveland or the semis. Grand scheme? Not worth it.

So why are we recruiting players who aren’t ready? I’m watching three fabulous true freshmen make a difference out of the gate at Toledo. Are we going to be saying the same thing a year from now about Jesse Burris? In this era of college hoops, the patience factor isn’t what it was 15 years ago.

In fairness, I dont think Boals + Co *did not expect* IJ to go two years without touching the floor. Certainly not this year. Without the injuries, Nicol was probably right to accept a redshirt. We need him now, but put yourself in his position. No more COVID years. His clock starts ticking the minute - and it can literally be just a minute - he tosses his warms up off and checks in. And now that we're halfway through the season...

Take this look at MAC frehmen a step further:

UT is getting quality minutes from 2 starters {Simmons and Wilson) and 2 reserves (Ford and Lewis), and some minutes from 6-10 project Brcic.

Ball St. starts Jones with Middleton as top reserve.

Miami starts at various times this year guards Ipsaro and Cooper; 7-0 Potter; 6-6 guard Elmer who scored 23 yesterday; and plays 6-9 Kotecki.

NIU is getting around 5 pts/g from 2 frosh, Mohammad and Lovings-Watts.

UB starts one frosh Sabol with a top reserve Boldin.

Unfortunately for these teams, in our current landscape of portal and NIL, you can't forecast future success on the quality of a roster's newcomers.

That giant for YSU is pretty nice also.

It was his only offer I believe.

Burris ain't cracking the lineup next year. He is a 6-5 Sheldon. He seems like a good player but is he any better than Corna or Estis? I don't see it.

Which begs the question…what is our recruiting identity? I have to believe a few players on scholarship on this year’s team are going to walk after this season. Boals better get it right. He needs players on scholarship who can contribute now. Not 2026.

If he’s not better than Corna and Estis (walk-ons), then what in the hell are we doing? We need to get a way from the McMurray, Gareri (aka Jesus), Foster, Miguel projects.

Possibly worse than those guys was Ellis Dozier. Ben Estis actually looked pretty good the one time he played much (vs the blind school though).

We're one more injury away from needing him to contribute.

Jesse Burris is a 3-star recruit, 13th ranked prospect in Ohio. Who turned down offers from Akron and Miami among others.

Last season he was conf PoY, All-Ohio, averaging 18.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals.

Corna is a 0 star walk-on whose only other offer came from PING.

not to be technical, but it's actually a second, just one ball in play. Isn't it funny how the coaches of the different sports want different rules on the redshirt?

And to the other posters, all HS recruits are great until they get on campus. It is never an exact science, and some do need a year or even two. That is my favorite thing about the basketball board, some here ejaculate all over the photos of High School signees and drool over how great they will be, while not really having a clue.

Blasphemy. Keep Corna's name out of your mouth. After he turned down Duke we've just been hiding him for our big March run.
