I'm usually one of the last to move over to the basketball board.

Wow, we're not good.

I'm a master of the obvious.

The good news… It isn’t that we don’t play hard. We just play poorly. Lost possessions. Bad defense tonight. Bad offense tonight.

Never could’ve imagined getting dominated by Toledo at home post-Shumate, Milltner, and Dennis.

No reason for us to be dominated by Tyler Friggin Cochran. Pathetic. And Boals needs to give us an IJ update. I would take Foster, Towns, Wight, McMurray, Gareri, Rifen and Nate Springs--at least they played--and Boals ran them out of town. If I were Lee Martin I'd do it myself but he is probably the reason IJ gets to live the sweet life.

This team is regressing. They played way too sloppy today. With as bad as our defense is, we need our offense to carry this team on a nightly basis and they simply aren't right now.

Hunter and Mitchell should be two of the best players on this team but they're not performing at the level necessary for this team to be successful. I agree with some of the other posters that want to see Elmore and Clayton receive more opportunities on offense.

I don't think recruiting is Boals problem. He brings in highly regarded talent. I think the bigger issue is bringing in guys that fit what he's looking to run and coaching them up. I'd take a wager that we have as many 3+ star recruits as anyone else in the MAC. I think it's to start questioning some of Boals tactics.

You hit the nail on the head. It's why until today we had 6 losses by 6 or less pts. But we have no gamechangers. JP, BVP, DW3..heck, Sears or a Mike Laster were gamechangers. Clayton is very good but cannot create his own shot.

We are what we are. We don't rebound, Shoot, handle the ball or defend enough to beat average division I teams. MAC has lots of mediocre teams, but we aren't contenders this year. We get waxed at home for the third time against 6 division I teams. We have lost to Toledo, Cleveland State, Youngstown State already. Good luck with recruiting. We might be the worst division I team the state this year. Miami might have a say about that still.

In Laster's final season he was someone we could count on to go get buckets. He wasn't a world beater but he was consistent from all spots on the floor. I wish we had someone like him on this team.

Actually, vs Toledo the leash should have been longer. While Wiznitzer was on the bench the Bobcats went down by 13. He came in and somehow the Bobcats closed the gap. When he was on the bench the Rockets had no trouble penetrating and scoring bunches of 2 pointers. Hadaway gave us nothing while Clayton had too few opportunities.

Since there was little defense with the lineups we played, why not put Gabe and Clayton on the floor at the same time to see if that mix would work. Coaches are too much in the "how do we match up to them" mode vs "let's see how they match up to us".

It couldn't have been any worse than the final outcome. No wonder Clayton fires up a three every time he touches it out there. He must feel that the only way he will touch the ball is if he gets an offensive rebound. Now maybe he doesn't move well without the ball or know how to make himself a target. On the radio it sounded like Hadaway had touches and that should have been Clayton while Gabe played the nobody ever passes it to me Clayton position.

For a "close" game, it never really felt that close. We had opportunities to make a run that were squandered by untimely turnovers and empty possessions. If Sheldon continues to shoot from the perimeter with this much confidence, somehow he has to see the floor. Maybe that's him taking minutes from Miles, who looks lost right now for some reason. I understand Sheldon might be a defensive liability, but he's the only guy amongst our guards than can stretch the defense and provide outside shooting.

Also, maybe we should try the severely undersized shorts that worked so well for Toledo's stars?

I sat in the vacated Ozone right on the court which is always fun to see how big, strong & fast things are down there. Toledo's offense is elite. Simmons, Wilson & Lewis...3 freshmen go 11 for 13 from the field, 5 assists 0 turnovers. They're smooth and comfortable and the whole damn team just shoots the ball well, or at least did last night. And 0 seniors. I would be excited if I'm a Rocket fan.

Coach Boals seemed despondent last night. Grumpy in more of a quiet way, not an angry way. His subs were more of the "you pissed me off there, come sit on the bench" variety. The whole vibe seemed icy...this team needs a good night in the worst way right now.

Ben Wight played 8 minutes, grabbed some rebounds and committed some fouls. Uneventful handshake. He sure handled his trip the Convo more classy and gracefully than Sam Towns.

Clayton did the catch and hoist awkward 3s of yesteryear and I hated it. He is a legit post player in the MAC. Let's embrace it. And Hadaway's ups and positioning and sense are really good...but he too camped out on the perimeter several times and even hoisted 2 threes himself. Hadaway should almost never be shooting 3s, and Clayton when he is spotted up open.

We have a ball handling / shot creating issue. EJ4 does his thing, but I worry that is getting sniffed out more with the same 1 or 2 pop and spin moves that opponents are starting to look for. Jaylin is really struggling with his outside shot and not having much luck distributing. Shereef is reckless with the ball. Sheldon doesn't have the size and stones yet and Miles seems reluctant, even though I believe he has PG skills.

Someone mentioned Mark Sears. Yeah, he is exactly what this team needs. We need our 5th year seniors Jaylin & Miles to step up and quarterback this team better going forward.

One thing we did well was hustle back and defend on breakaways. I think we had 5 really nice blocks/defenses of would be sure buckets, 2 of which brought completely garbage fouls from the very whistle happy refs.

I do credit Toledo, I thought they looked really good. We really need to get a win Saturday and if so, week 1 isn't so disastrous. Drop another one at home Saturday and it's a sad state of affairs.

Gonna predict the refs' calls are going to start going Ohio's way in the 2nd half. It can't get any worse, can it?
We foul a lot this year. We're on the bottom ~15% of college basketball in a bunch of foul related stats. Something like 24% of our opponents points come from the line, we commit ~20 fouls a game.

We actually defend shots from the floor well, particularly threes. But we give away a lot of points at the free throw line. Likely because we are undersized.
Inability to defend without fouling was beyond horrible. Toledo went to the line 31 times.

William & Mary is one of few U.S. universities recognized as "Public Ivy." It offers the lowest student-to-faculty ratio (13-to-one) among leading national public universities.

So he went there for 4 years. Is that really anything to be bummed out about?

At this point, what does Boals have to lose? We can't make a 3 point shot, but the only guy who is doing it consistently the last few games is Sheldon. I know defense is an issue, but start him at the 2-guard with Hunter. Bring Reef in off the bench. Sheldon is nowhere close to being a PG. Maybe we find lightning in a bottle and the kid turns into Chad Estis. I would sign up for that type of Sheldon career right now.

I'd be all for this. I said in the Davidson thread it might be time to separate Shereef and Jaylin. I get they're buddies; but the we desperately need to spread the defense out more. They're skill-sets are identical at this point and it isn't complimentary. I think they also have a tendency to look for each other first.

Pair Sheldon with one and Miles with the other.

I've been saying this for weeks. I also believe Sheldon deserves more minutes, although the kid (like most everyone else on this team) can't make free throws.

I'm not knocking the ideas. We definitely need to shake things up and try something.

But you know the season has gone off the rails when the best we can come up with is we need to play Sheldon and Wiznitzer more.
