Boals posted on his Instagram a few minutes ago. AJB had surgery on his shoulder.

I guess we were right that his struggles seemed to be injury related. Hope he can get fixed up and get it back on track next season. Really awful break for the kid. Definitely thought he would be in the race for MAC POY this season.

I guess we’re about to see what Cornish has sooner rather than later.

Am I the only person who feels uneasy with how this situation was handled? He was obviously affected by it and was not himself but after last year's MAC coming out party what went wrong? Why did he play at all? What with the secrecy? Throw in the IJ secrecy and I just feel like there is a weird bubble Boals has formed around the program. It is ok when a team is winning but now we are struggling and it just makes me uneasy. I hope AJ has a quick recovery and I do hope he plays in the Convo next year.

Brutal news, but I guess it isn’t entirely surprising based on how he was playing. I hope he’s back next season as well.

Big opportunity for Hadaway and Cornish to maximize the loss. I do hope once Miles is back into the swing of things, Shereef is delegated to 6th man again. With depth taking a hit, I like the idea of him being the spark off the bench. Plus it re-inserts one of our better 3pt threats back into a starting role.

Pull the redshirt off of Nichol. Put him in 5 to 10 mins per game and let's see what we've got. We have 2 of our 12 guys taking up dead schollies so why have a 3rd. Love that IJ gets a free education and sunny trips and now AJ gets to be a cheerleader but we cannot afford a wasted redshirt on Nichol. This year is a wash unless EJ4, Reef and Jaylin suddenly become 6-6 each.

Can we actually do that? I don’t know enough about the redshirt process. In hindsight and assuming Boals knew we wouldn’t have IJ for OOC (and potentially the season), it is actually baffling we redshirted Nichol. Having seen him up close in the Bahamas, he’s every bit of 6’7 and 20 pounds heavier than Hadaway.

Agree we should get Nichol in there, even at 5-10 minutes. We need the size, but in light of losing our “4” we need the depth. We need bodies over 6’4”.

I actually have no idea 😃 Have to figure that if a team had a ton of injuries a redshirt could be pulled?

There’s no rule about timing of ppl coming off redshirts, just the amount one can play while having one. In football, it’s 4 games. In bball it’s just one.

You do not get "redshirt" status until after the season is complete and it's based upon the games played. In the case of basketball, any game competition even one minute makes a player ineligible. Ironically football gets participation in 4 games. And a player can play at anytime, even if the coach states they "want to redshirt" a player, without anything more than just inserting them into a game.

NOTE: Apologies to MDWST, I did not see his post before making this one.

I HAVE ALWAYS HATED THIS RULE!!!! ...

BOTH ARE MAJOR D1 SPORTS. IF FB CAN HAVE 1/3RD OF THEIR 12 GAMES NOT COUNT TOWARD A REDSHIRT, WHY CAN'T BASKETBALL HAVE 1/3RD OF THEIR 30 GAMES?

IF I WERE AN INJURED BB PLAYER 10 GAMES INTO THE SEASON, I WOULD GET A LAWYER AGAINST THE NCAA FOR THIS.

Believe players and schools have done this. It's why the NCAA has a "waiver" process. You can petition and request but they don't have to grant.

According to an article I just found on sportinglad.com Titled, NCAA Basketball Redshirt Rules 2022: Understanding the Redshirt Regulations. It explains the redshirt rules and the 3 different types of redshirt. Since we are talking about AJ Brown and his injury, I will just mention the medical redshirt rules. According to the article there are two conditions for a medical redshirt.

1) The injury must be verified with documentation and be deemed season-ending.

2) The injury had to happen within the first half of the season and they couldn't have participated in more than 1/3 of the games. I looked, and AJ has played in 9 of the games so far out of our 30 game schedule.

Now, on that last part, I'm not sure if the 1/3 rule is for the games played or for the season total. They did not specify that in the article.

The other types of redshirt mentioned were: Academic and Voluntary.

Certainly wishing AJ all the best. Honestly, I d be surprised if he’s ready to go by the start of the 2024-2025 season. Sounds like a grueling rehab process ahead.

I also don’t understand why he played this year? It was obviously quite apparent he’s had serious issues with the shoulder. Just seems odd to me that this was not a serious consideration to sit him for the entire year before the season started.

And now we have another recruit who we could use right now…Ben Nichol…who clearly is a project at this stage since he’s red-shirting.

In that case you would be eligible for a redshirt, but you’d have to apply for it.

I'm glad he is resetting things with surgery and excited to see him rehabbed and ready next season. The sky is the limit with AJ, no question the shoulder held him back last year and this year. It is easy to say they should've went this route awhile ago, but most injuries heal with time. There was likely no reason to suggest he had to rush into surgery, and surely they felt an entire offseason would heal it up. It is what it is.

9 games played, decent chance he could get a medical redshirt for this season if he wants it. He does NOT have the Covid year so if he doesn't get it, we will only have him 2 seasons.
