Wow. My 15 year old son & I really enjoyed watching this game. Several moments of LOL at Defiance...bless their heart. It is hard to put into words how many tiers apart these 2 programs are. It's kind of ridiculous, just like UC-Clermont was last year, but whatever...if it happens once a year so be it.

Funny story. My son, let's just say, is NOT a Wiz fan. He has talked since last year about taking time to put together a lowlight reel of him. He was trying to convince me to help him do it over winter break and I'm poo pooing it saying it would take so much time and I'm not even sure how we would do it, etc. And right as I say that Gabe gets the breakaway and just completely slams his face into the ground. We laughed so hard, and my son declared it was a sign from God to put the lowlight reel together. It was great too in the 2nd half when he got another dunk and gingerly put it in while the Ohio bench chuckled.
I'd bet money your kid won't play D-1 college bball on a full ride. So let him make fun of Wiz. I'm guessing you don't know Wiz' connection to his teammates in Athens.

Even if the kid quits the team, but stays in school their is a bonus of some type.
And this is a very common model, so much so you have to wonder if they actively encourage it. The more people quit, the more spots they have to give for next year. I knew a couple guys that went to Capital for football. They showed up Freshman year to a class of 60 players and quit after 1 season, but stayed all 4 years at Capital.

And there is a similar game being played in the arts. Had multiple friends go to Otterbein for musical theatre, schmoozed by "offers." Let's just say Otterbein did not set them up for a career of fame and fortune on broadway.

Every time I discuss the topic it just makes me more and more angry. They're private institutions free to recruit as they see fit, but the deliberate misleading bothers me and people need to be more honest when talking to others so more parents and graduating High Schoolers understand the game being played.

I can most certainly assure you he won't play D1 basketball. He plays soccer & baseball, and the next level is unlikely in those sports too.

Look, everything is relative, and most everyone understands that. In fact, as we laughed at Defiance my son made the point himself "what's funny is if we saw these guys randomly at the gym we would think they were awesome, but when you put them on a D1 court it's just horrific." Gabe relative to other top tier D1 players just doesn't pass the eye test for us, I'm sorry if that upsets you.

Yes Wiz would completely destroy me, my son, and every extended family member I ever had on a basketball court. That fact doesn't even remotely preclude me from deciding how he is in relation to those he is competing with and against. I am no doctor but you better believe I will make judgments on their skill before I go into surgery. I can't be a waitress at Hooters, but I can opine which girls fit the credentials best. I could go on.

His attitude and commitment to his teammates also doesn't stop me from judging his play. Congrats to him and all players for achieving D1 status, now welcome to the world of high standards and constant judgment. I do not need to defend my support for Ohio athletics. I'm generally a positive supporter, but I won't lie about the thoughts bouncing thru my head and neither should you. I am confident Wiz himself would say he'd rather have a loyal supporter around judging him than no fans at all.
