Check out how the Grizzlies got to the foul line with under a second to go and trailing by 2.  They end up advancing in OT as a result.

As a side note, it's a shame that the NCAA Tournament won't likely have Travis Bader in it this year.  It would be hugely entertaining to see the matchup of one of the "big boys" trying to stop him.

Forgive me for not jumping off the "Bader is a little beotch" bandwagon. Since I watched him getting through screens by grabbing jersies in multiple Horizon league games and again when they played us with him as a frosh and a soph , nailing guys in the nutzz on rebounds and employing similar antics all the skills he possesses and exhibits are overshadowed by his actions on the court. I have oft remarked that he would not last a quarter at the local park. Those boys would have lined up to beat the snot out of him.

In this vid h clearly is not set and is falling backwards before the defender even gets there....now anyone who knows me knows I love a good charge taken but this is a cheap shot and for all those guys who give up their body and take a good hard charge to the chest ......well this is another cheap move that lessens the chance of a real charge taken getting called. Should have been a block if anything was called at all.

In a frame by frame the defender is at the lane line and Baders left foot is still in the air. He slides in and barely gets his foot down before the contact. The defender is leaning into the run, Bader never gets straightened and in postion (he is still leaning back)  before he starts falling . If the defender was on offense this year, that,, under the new rules would have clearly been a called block.

Good for coach and good for them for the inventive strategy. Good for Bader for getting it sold...bad for refs and hoops that the ploy did not get past an overzealous whistle blower. Still a little Beotch. *IMHO*. Gives more fodder for those folks who want the Charge rule abolished.

I agree that Bader wasn't set, but what a brilliant play call.  I'm definitely putting that into my playbook.

Like the play call but isn't he in the no charge circle?

695 ....make sure you use this one too.... loved it when I saw it....inbounder gets the ball back and goes full length. We always hear talking heads saying "you have to make them catch the ball coming back". That's fine ....but do not sleep on the really fast guard inbounding the ball. Defender on the big should have stepped over and taken the charge LOL

I laughed about the charge circle being there as I suspect some ref would actually use that to justify a block instead of just ignoring it this situation

To be honest, kampe gets his way a lot. I saw folks talking about how much rope Hurley gets but Kampe makes his own breaks. I have friends that woudl have winked and said..."OK coach..IF he is set and IF he gets run over fine but I am gonna call a block if I see it" Got to wonder what Von Sossan or Boroski would have done.

This is not the first time Oakland has used that particular play. Kampe did it against Oral Roberts while the Golden Grizzlies were in the Summit League. Both times Kampe took the time to warn the referees ahead of time what he was planning. "I go, 'You got to call it now if he runs him over,'" Kampe told reporters after the game. "He goes, 'If he runs him over, Bader goes down and he goes down on top of him, I'll call it.'"

It wasn't a charge; it was a block.  Oakland was on offense trying to inbound; the YSU player was on defense and ran into an offensive player.  The "no-charge" circle doesn't apply on the defensive end of the court.  He could've been called for a moving screen.

One of our assistant coaches of my high school team had a brilliant under the basket inbounds play that worked almost every time we needed a basket.

The four guys not holding the ball would stand around the perimeter like they were getting ready to set up a play, with the fifth guy standing under the basket like he's ready to take the ball out. All of a sudden, the coach and players on the floor would say "hey, Mike you're the wrong guy taking it out! Jeremy is supposed to take the ball out!" Jeremy walks slowly toward the front of the rim and the inbounder passes him the ball for an easy deuce.

Obviously it only works if the opposing team hasn't seen it before, but if everyone sells it and gets into the "acting" it can work like a charm.

Doesn't the ref have to hand the ball to the inbounder and begin counting? How does the play get around that?

I was never into the theatrical plays..but then again my high school team wasn't super, either.

I run that play often.  The timing has to be perfect.  The guy walking down the lane has to say "I'm supposed to take it out" immediately after the ball has been handed to the guy inbounding the ball.  The defense rests assuming the ref will reset the play, which results in an uncontested layup.  It's had a 100% success rate for our teams in the past year or so.

On a side note, it never gets old to see the guy throw the ball off the back of the defender face guarding the lane.  Stevie did it Saturday against Kent, but couldn't get it up fast enought to lay it in.

That s  a favorite play my Coach taught us and I have handed down to every team I have ever coached. They all seem to love that play. WHen the designated player walks up and sells that for a lay up one time a year they all go bonkers. We let each one of them practice being the guy and sell it for laughs one practice.

Borna gave me the play over a few beers a couple years ago.  I laugh every time I call it.

Though that's all true, he's one of those guys that's entertaining as hell when he get's on a tear, and that's what makes the game fun to watch for me.  Kinda like Russ Smith did against SMU a couple nights back. He was pretty much dropping 3's from anywhere he wanted past half court.

I agree he wasn't as well.  I'm kinda surprised a referee would take the, "If he does this, you'll call it" bait at the end of a game like that.
