Around tournament time, I always hear people say "It's hard to beat a team a third time". I decided to see what kind of data I could find. Since the 2000-2001 season I found 39 cases of one team beating another twice in the MAC regular season, then playing a third in the MAC Tournament. The team that won both regular season games is 32-7 (.821) in those third games.

I posted this on the MAC board as well, and someone asked when one team was an obvious favorte saying it was tough to beat a GOOD team three times.  I'm not sure how to quantify GOOD, but...

When both teams were .500 or better in MAC play, the team that won the first two games was 11-3 (.786) in the third.

When the two teams were withing 4 MAC wins of each other, the team that won the first two games was 15-4 (.789) in the third.

In other words, the thought is we'll have a tough time beating Western in Cleveland?

Yes it is tough, although if I remember correctly, three of the last four times it was done was by us.

Beating Miami in 2007, then Kent and Akron in 2010.

The most recent was when NIU beat EMU in 2012 as I'm sure you all remember.

This is the reason that myth survives:

Danny Manning @ KU

And if you remember it, it was perhaps the original CBS Shining moment and one of my own greatest tournament picks of all time.

Despite the stats, this kind of thing has me worried.   I remember the time back in the Danny Nee Era when we beat Kent at their place in the last game of the regular season and then the come back on knock us out of the MAC tourney a few days later in the first round.  I've seen this type of thing happen a number of times.  I think I'd rather have played Kent.  On the other hand, we have beaten teams three times in a season before, so it's a hurdle we can overcome.  In a tournament environment, of course, you need a different "mind set" and a never-say-die approach to keep winning game after game.  Let's hope that this year's OHIO squad has that kind of attitude.  Go OHIO!

And who can forget Beefalo for the MAC Championship in 2005. I was there for the Fiami semifinal game and the champ game. One of my favorite moments was meeting the Buffalo student section in the front entrance.

This "it's hard to beat a team 3 times" was quite the topic of discussion leaving the Convo yesterday. Despite bringing up the stats, no one seemed convinced. The cliche' is pretty widely held among basketball fans, it seems.

I think the reason people feel like it's hard to beat a team 3 times in a row is because it's going to be hard to beat this Miami team 3 times in a row.  See JC's press conference after the game last night.  He's right-Miami plays as hard as anyone in the league.  And it's not like Ohio demolished Miami in either game this year; both games were nailbiters won by Ohio in overtimes.  The two teams are fairly even.  So this game's going to be a war, just like the last 2 have been.

That being said, MUCK FIAMI!!!

The Athens Chamber of Commerce recently published a study estimating that people trying to forget injected somewhere between 4.6 and 5.2 million in the Athens economy last year.

There was a sort of interesting/awkward back & forth with Russ/JC on the post game interview about this topic last night.

Akron beat us all three times last year.
